The problem here is that Happy has never had the money to make a video. 10 albums and not one video has to be some kind of record for an artist of Happy's calibur and output. Does anyone know Spike Jonze's address? Or Ridley Scott's? Or Baz Luhrmann's? :-) My approach is to buy buy buy CDs (Equipoise is on sale for $9.50 at www.auntiesocialmusic.com) and give 'em away. I'd imagine that Happy could use some cash flow, and who knows what a giveaway could lead to (not that I have an answer from experience, sigh). V np: The "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack, for about the 200th time. To think that I first heard the name Gillian Welsh here on Ecto, years ago. Andrea's described on her web site (www.andreakoziol.com) as a "torch folk singer/songwriter". I'd have to throw the words "pop", "jazz" and "soul" in there too. She's one of the most passionate singers I've ever seen, with a warm, expressive voice and great control. She can croon; she can belt. And she's definitely worth a look if you get the chance. She blew my mind at VFF - I knew I had to buy her music after about 30 seconds. And actually I was prepared not to like the album quite so much but it's got a very acoustic, mellow vibe that I like (I suspect her other albums are poppier though). But I'd definitely recommended "Simple" for kick-back-and-groove late-night listening. Whoohoo, sherlyn ps - also, Zoe Lewis's live show is a helluva lot of fun, if you get the chance to check her out... =-=-=-=-= Sherlyn Koo - sherlyn@fl.net.au =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= "So I promise to grab my soul And leave my ego at the door, I'm gonna open up my eyes..." - Melissa Ferrick ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 19:24:22 -0400 From: dave Subject: Re: Lynn Canfield stuff Joseph Zitt wrote: ...a copy of the very impossible to find 45" "Pre-Burnt" ...The buyer would also pay Priority Mail postage (each would fit in a Priority Mail envelope). End of deep thought section. On a more mundane level, think about the kind of album that you must go and buy after hearing it at a friend's house, because you can't bear to go home without it. Ectophile Vienna Teng kindly sent me a copy of her CD, "Waking Hour" recently, and I'm blissfully happy to report that this CD is one of those that many of you on the list will simply *have* to own after hearing her work. It fits into all of the above categorizations and a few more that I haven't even thought of... The entire album, well-crafted, with thoughtful, emotive lyrics and some stunning musical and vocal arrangements, is an excellent and exquisite work, with many surprises for the listener. Vienna's clear, articulate voice and subtle vocal harmonies remind me very strongly of Judy Tzuke's " Welcome to the Cruise" album from the late 70s, while I find the overall feel of the album to be very reminiscent of "Fumbling toward Ecstasy" in its intensity and mood, without it falling into that 'me too' category that some artists can find themselves in. "Fumbling" has alway been my favorite Sarah album, and my comparison to this album in particular is meant as a big compliment to Vienna's abilities. My lexicon is limited in this regard; doubtless other Ectophiles will be able to make broader comparisons. The opening track, as it built into the beautiful chorus, made me realize that this was not yer basic indie release, and by the time I was listening to the fantastic 'Between', with its low, growly, atmospheric backing and unexpected arrangment twists, I was completely hooked. I will be listening to, and writing a review of, "Waking Hour" during my stay at Strawberry Music Festival over the coming weekend, and will post it upon my return. Meanwhile, those of you out there wishing you could find something very vibrant, exciting and just plain wonderful, to stick in your CD trays, go to www.viennateng.com and listen to some of the downloads available there. Everyone please have a safe and happy Labor Day. phil ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 21:22:38 -0500 (CDT) From: "Mitchell A. When the conversation turned to email lists, I told her what lists I was on, including Ecto. She asked what kind of music was Ecto about. I replied, adult alternative. She asked for examples of artists in that genre, I said, Kate Bush, for one (not being sure how much name recognition Happy would get straight away). And then my friend smiled and said, "Ah, thinking music." Thinking music--music for people who think. As my mother's old boss used to say, it's terribly simple. Wonder why none of us ever thought of this before, as a capsule description of Ectophilic music :-). Hi, Just a reminder that I'll be facilitating an online chat with Veda Hille tomorrow, Tuesday, August 28 at 8 pm Eastern Time (5 pm Pacific -- I know some of you West Coasters may still be at work, and Europeans will have to stay up late, but Veda requested the time and well, we all know what a diva she is ). This is your chance to ask her those burning questions about _Field Study_ and her trip to the Yukon, or advice on how to deal with wild bears. Or just pop in and say hey. She has enjoyed the previous two chats we've done, and the chance to interact with her fans. The chat will be in a private room in the Music section of http://chat.yahoo.com. The instructions are as follows: - -- Sign in using your regular Yahoo! ID. If you do not have one, you can create one from that page. It's free, and you won't get spam (at least, I've never gotten any). - -- In the upper right will be a little box that is labeled "Chat Software". The default is Java, but you can change to HTML via the drop-down box. (Note: I've tried both, and Java appears to work a lot better.) - -- Click on the "Enter Chat Room" link you will see once you're signed in. This will dump you into a catch-all room. Do not be afraid. - -- In the "Chat" box (or, if in HTML chat, the box next to the "Send/Refresh" button), type "/goto smoemeth". Click the "Send" button. This will bring you into the room I have created for the chat. If you have any questions or problems getting in, try emailing me, or I'll be signed on to AIM (my AIM ID is "smoemeth"). I will create the room sometime around 7:30 pm EST.
