My long-time favourite, very little known artist from Melbourne releases her second CD, and those in the know (about two dozen at the latest count) rejoice... She finally has her own website at - I think there are some samples there, and a pretty spot-on review of her new album. I might also put up a track for Ecto consumption one of those days, but I'd like to get her permission first. - -Swirl, "Light Fill My Room". Hallelujah, the record 6 years in the making finally emerges... for those unfamiliar with the story of Swirl, they started out in the early nineties, but made the terrible mistake of signing with a major... only to be pushed aside, tied up in contractual obligations, lost in mergers and corporate shuffles and finally dropped. Still, there is a happy ending: they survived, and unlike many such cases they ended up with the rights to their own record, allowing them to finally release it independently. So, what is it like? Actually I don't know - I haven't been able to get it yet, but it definitely is out, it was reviewed in this weeks' street press. - -Low/Dirty Three, "In the Fishtank". I believe Low have a few fans on Ecto, and possibly some of you might know Dirty Three, our all-instrumental post-rock trio led by mad violinist, Warren Ellis. These two bands recorded this mini album for a Dutch label, Konkurrent. Apparently the deal was, they spent just two days in the studio and basically wrote and recorded the whole thing there and then... I haven't heard this one yet either, but it seems quite interesting.... Further down the track, Dirty Three are talking of releasing a two-disk live CD, recorded during their tour last year. If they go through with this, it will definitely appear on my shopping list - they are not really my everyday cup of tea, but I witnessed their gig once and though it was quite a while ago I remember it still :) np: Dirty Three, "Horse Stories" - ---------------------------------------------------- 'Those who would give up liberty in the interest of security deserve, and will have, neither.' --Benjamin Franklin - ---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Aug 2001 11:15:44 -0500 From: Robert Zeiser Subject: Sam Phillips Hey Alan. I'm sure there have been a few opinions posted on Sam Phillips' newest ("Fan Dance"). I'm on digest, so I get a little bit of a delay. I enjoy the disc quite a bit. It is definitely more subdued and acoustic than any of her previous work. It actually has more in common with hubby/producer T-Bone's last, "The Criminal Under My Own Hat". Often, there is just percussion, bass and acoustic guitar (a little cello & banjo thrown in for good measure). The songs took a little while to sink in, which for me is often a good sign (instant accessibility often results in rapid boredom). While I miss the sound she crafted with "The Indescribable Wow" and "Cruel Inventions" (or even "The Turning"), it's a good direction for her. I find it a much more pleasurable listen than "Omnipop...". Off on a political note, she credits herself as Sam Burnett on the liner notes. While I find the tribute to her husband touching, I still think the idea of a woman changing her name upon marriage is a bit savage. Is she his property, or is she just a lower class of human? T-Bone Phillips has a nice ring to it. Anyway, that's my 2% of a dollar. So she could even have gone with "Leslie Burnett" for that matter.. ;) In the mid eighties, I was heavily into Christian music, so I still think of her as Leslie, rather than Sam.. Heck, i even liked her older stuff better... YMMV... moo. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Aug 2001 15:42:39 -0400 From: "Hotel America" Subject: Tori Amos Presale Password? Hey all, I REALLY want to pre-order tickets for Tori's upcoming show, but I don't belong to her mailing list. Even if I sign up now, I probably won't get the e-mail that has the password you need to pre-order online. Sooo... could one of you kind-hearted souls let me know the password? Pretty please? I'll love you forever. :) - --Chuck _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Aug 2001 19:42:45 -0400 From: Richard Subject: Re: Sam Phillips Robert Zeiser wrote: > Off on a political note, she credits herself as Sam Burnett on the liner > notes.
