I've seen some other interesting new releases that I don't think I've seen mentioned around here. I don't have any of them, but wouldn't mind reading comments. I've seen new albums by Ivy, Gillian Welch and Sam Phillips. BTW, the Sam Phillips album calls her Sam Burnett all over the inside, but still Sam Phillips on the outside. neal np: The Keep - Happy ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2001 16:41:19 -0500 From: Carolyn Andre Subject: Susan McKeown/Irving Plaza 8/10 - cancelled probably too late, but if anyone was planning on the Susan McKeown gig at Irving Plaza with Luka Bloom it has been cancelled - he had visa problems. I'm usually amazed that shows happen at all. Last year her three dates in New Mexico fell apart (and I even did see one of them advertised, as it apparently was set well enough to be included in a newsletter). The same venue in Albuquerque had continued negotiating with her to return this year, and tentative dates were again scheduled. Not sure what happened, but that date is now booked with someone else, and her tour doesn't seem to come closer then Denver. Ah well. Then again, maybe that's Albuquerque. Last night's Lucinda Williams show was originally booked into the same venue that Brian Setzer was playing at. She had to relocate to a 500 person hall (instead of 2000). She was mighty pissed about this, as it was apparently a restriction placed on her by SFX, the major local booking company. Though between railing at SFX, she enthusiastically praised the club and it's intimacy. Anyway, everyone here who ever saw Peter & Wendy raved enthusiastically about it. It's well worth a trip to NYC to see. Lisa Moscetielo is a good vocalist too, and I highly recommend the show. neal np: The Keep - Happy ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2001 17:08:51 -0500 From: Carolyn Andre Subject: Re: Susan McKeown/Irving Plaza 8/10 - cancelled At 04:57 PM 8/10/01, meth wrote: >Carolyn reported: > > >probably too late, but if anyone was planning on the Susan McKeown gig at > >Irving Plaza with Luka Bloom it has been cancelled - he had visa > >problems. I could rant a bit about SFX myself, but I'll spare you all. In an interesting, semi-related development, possibly the most famous theater in New Haven, the Shubert (where many Broadway productions get their world premieres before hitting the Great White Way) is now under new ownership, and they're starting to bring in more popular music performances. In the next month, they've got Lucinda Williams as well as Alison Krauss coming to town. The theater holds 1600, which is a pretty good size for something like that. I'd heard that Tori's people were looking across the street at the Palace for a date on the upcoming tour, but that hasn't been confirmed and I'm wondering if we might someday see her at the Shubert as well. >Anyway, everyone here who ever saw Peter & Wendy raved enthusiastically >about it. I'm not sure who double booked the shows, but after that, SFX said (as reported by her at least), that she could not play in any other large theater in the area. She was very bitter that these large corporations had taken over everything, and as a result, many of her fans were not able to see her perform since she was stuck playing a small venue. Now, I have no love for giants like SFX, and wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that they jerk artists around. However, I'm also a huge fan of small intimate shows (that's probably big news to people). If Lucinda Williams had her way, she would have played in a 2000 seat venue. As a side affect of being mistreated by SFX, those of us that could get in to the show were treated to a better performance. I can understand the value of playing a larger venue, but she clearly responded to the intimacy of playing a small venue. I'd love for people to realize there is value in playing in places smaller than the largest place they can play, though I don't expect to see that happen much. The Cowboy Junkies played at this same club 2 years ago, and it was incredible. > In the next month, they've got Lucinda Williams as well as > Alison Krauss coming to town. I think Tori was the only one that sold out, and that was definitely the smallest place I've seen her in. > Quite simply, everyone on the planet should see PETER AND WENDY before they > die.
