"year of the bad president" by susan werner? sorry, couldn't resist. :) and it's not like canada's doing all that well in that department either, lately... but really, this idea of a national anthem as `sacrosanct' really gives me the creeps. if we don't routinely question the foundations and traditions of modern life, where does that leave us? personally i'd find it quite interesting to hear new interpretations of national anthems, especially, (particularly) in the case of the US, by more left-wing artists. it would probably make a *very* interesting protest album. whenever i hear the US national anthem i still recall bits of a very silly treatment from an outland or bloom county strip years ago. :) - -damon Damon Harper _/\_ "Cannot say. Well, Radiohead has a good "National Anthem". And in the interest of world peace, we might consider Karlheinz Stockhausen's "Hymnen", which, IIRC uses national anthems from around the world. And it can't be much harder for the average singer than the Star Spangled Banner. I always thought the original lyrics to the tune that the Star Spangled Banner appropriated we better, but that's just me. But I think Laurie Anderson had the last word in her "The B Side of the National Anthem": You know, now that there's talk about changing the National Anthem to "America the Beautiful", I think it's a good time to look at the one we've got. Now I have to say I really like "The Star Spangled Banner". It's hard to sing, though, with all those arpeggios. I mean you're out at the ballpark and the fans are singing away and it's sort of pathetic really watching everyone try to hold on to the melody. The words are great, though. Just a lot of questions written during a fire. Things like: Hey! Do you see anything over there? I dunno, there's a lot of smoke. Say, isn't that a flag? Hmm, couldn't say, really, it's pretty early in the morning. Hey! Do you smell something burning? I mean, that's the whole song. It's a big improvement over most national anthems though, which are 4/4 time. (We're number one! This is the best place!) I also like the B side of the national anthem, "Yankee Doodle." Truly a surrealist masterpiece. Yankee Doodle came to town Riding on a pony Stuck a feather in his hat And called it macaroni. Now if you can understand the words to this song you can understand anything that's happening in the art world today. -- from "Empty Places", 1989 - -- |> ~The only thing that is not art is inattention~ --- Marcel Duchamp <| | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | Latest CD: Jerusaklyn http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Aug 2001 12:43:18 -0700 (PDT) From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: SIG is back I just talked to Chris and he's gotten everything back up and running. Danny Kirwan and Peter Green had the concept down. Penance/self mortification: Vickie, I am well into the penalty period. I must have listened to _Ecto_ six times since Monday. Oh, and I am a relative innocent. Its not as if I forgot _Ecto_; I was shambling around the house for weeks quizzing myself as to where the CD could have got off to, and Sunday night my eye crawled across the nightstand and inched its way down to the floor to find the dust-covered jewel. _Ecto_ Electric Bass: Would That I Could; Off from Out from Under Me; Ecto (Very nice bass); Poetic Justice. The other cuts are without bass or have synthesized bass. I thought I heard electric bass mixed low in I Cannot Go On, but who knows? Ms. Katherine (Artful Mdrr) informed me that Happy doesnt remember playing bass since she was a teenager. I know its hard to come to grips with old age, but I figure she was twenty when she did _Ecto_. Happy said she couldnt claim to be a bass player. If a person plays the bass with authority, using good notes, and smells like a bass player, she is a bass player. Ecto Lead Guitar Work: Ecto; I Cant Go On; Dont Want to Hear It; To Be E. Mortal. Probably others. Sometimes the electric guitar work is more a descant, but there is some wailing going on, complete with string bending. Phil Hudson, ringer: I knew the first time I heard _Dectopia_ that Phil misspent his youth playing in pubs. Bill Mazur probably did too, though maybe in bars. Cloning: Andrew Fries thinks that if Happy the clone is not brought up in the environment her donor grew up in, she may not wind up a musician. I agree for the most part, but I think much of our personality is hard-wired. Remember _Trading Places_? (No, Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy, not Jamie Lee Curtis.) Nature versus nurture. Ive been hearing of and reading about twins raised separately from birth. Seems like they often dress the same way, have the same decorating preferences, etc. There are whole families hard-wired for depression. I suspect Happy would wind up a creative person no matter who raised her or whether or not she had a happy childhood. I think we should go ahead with the cloning if for no other reason than to satisfy our intellectual curiosities. Kevin Bartlett: I thought you might want to know what he is up to. He is working on a solo album but keeps getting interrupted by paying work. Forty remixes of a FYE commercial (dont know if it is TV or Radio), using Urban, Country, Pop, Alternative, and R&B styles. An HBO project. Scoring three videos. He sounds like he is content. Okay, Ill shut up for a while if no one provokes me. Bye, Lyle Note: Listening to "Would That I Could" reminded me of a wonderful writer named Sylvia Townsend Warner and a book of short stories titled, _Kingdoms of Elfin_. She writes beautifully but has a rather bleak view of life, so if you read her, keep a bottle of Prozac (generic is cheaper)nearby. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Aug 2001 20:03:56 -0700 From: "Lord Tyr" Subject: New Poem??
