This was essentially the start of our second season, as it was early July last year that we put on our first house concert. It's pretty amazing to see how things have changed since then. It's been so much fun though. I don't think when we did the first one that we'd ever have imagined seeing all these great people performing in our homes. Here's the list of folks we've had so far... 1. Stephanie Hewett & Anna Wolfe 2. Marlee MacLeod 3. Amy Denio 4. Mary Lydia Ryan 5. Cindy Lee Berryhill 6. Laurianne Fiorentino 7. Kingfisher Davis 8. Robert Hoyt 9. Bonfire Madigan 10. Eleni Kelakos 11. Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem 12. Wendy Rule 13. Erica Wheeler 14. Willow The Willow show was a lot of fun. The band was remarcably prompt, showing up at the gate to Jeff's community about 2 seconds before I did. I let them into Jeff's house and we immediately started hauling in load after load of equipment. By the time Jeff got there, we had a full drum kit set up, 2 electric guitars and one electric slide, an amp and two speakers on posts. Jeff was quite surprised to see the transformation of his living room! After soundcheck I was a little more relaxed about the band being able to contain their sound within the living room. I think it might still have been interesting to have seen them do an accoustic show, but this one was certainly quite tasty. They played virtually everything off the new Sweet Dark Demon, a few tracks from Willow's first solo CD, a few new songs and a cover of Gershwin's Summertime. To me, this incarnation of Willow is vaguely reminiscent of Over the Rhine, but mostly in atmosphere. The instrumental make-up is different, and Willow doesn't sound like Karen Bergquist. (In the late night music listening session at my place, I discovered Willow was a huge OTR fan.) The cover of Summertime wasn't as flashy and over-the-top as Wendy Rule's (go figure), but instead was a continuation of the moody, somewhat dark sound they'd been performing throughout the evening. Willow also talked about being brought up on traditional country western songs before playing a new tune they had dubbed The Country Song. She said as a child she was a big fan of Judy Lynn, who's album cover featured her in a beautiful green limestone coat and hat. She claimed to have learned to yodel, but when I pressed her to demonstrate (with enthusiastic support from the audience and her band [who had never heard her yodel before}), she claimed to only yodel in her car. So, if anyone out there takes the chance to see Willow play somewhere, be sure to ask her to yodel :) Well, that was pretty much the evening. If anyone is curious to hear some sound samples, you can find them on her web site at http://www.willowsmusic.com. I think this album will be quite attractive to many ectophiles. neal np: Sweet Dark Demon - Willow ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jul 2001 12:44:43 +1000 From: Andrew Fries Subject: Re: Sleanish Missy Higgins Jess wrote: >Sooo Beautiful! But I'll definitely keep my eye out for her from now on, and post if I learn anything... - ---------------------------------------------------- 'Those who would give up liberty in the interest of security deserve, and will have, neither.' --Benjamin Franklin - ---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #212 **************************
