If anyone is ever near Eugene Oregon in July, I highly recommend this 3 days festival, sort of a Burning Man without the heat, under the woods, or a Renaissance Faire without the accents....anyway, we played to a wonderful large crowd, swaying and belly dancing to us, it was amazing. The last time I performed was trying to outscream Wendy at the House Concert in our insanity jam there, me trying to sing Happy's Feed the Fire over insane improvs, kids banging and Wendy howling....I finally left the stage to wander and sing in my toy mic and I still laugh at the outrageousness of that moment....so, to play all my songs with the people that wrote them, with a sound check, for a whole hour was redeeming, to say the least. Wish you could have been there. Speaking of Happy and Feed The Fire, I thought she was great out west, despite her injuries, and she caught me unaware when Bill Mazur introduced us and I mumbled "oh, I hope you don't hate me when you hear my version of FTF" and she answered "I already hate you"...me, the joker, went Huh? She is funny and snappy and I really enjoyed her. I hope her hand heals up fast. She wrote me a lovely email a couple weeks ago (and I, touring bad girl have not answered her yet, & beating myself daily doesn't seem to help) saying that she really really liked my version (on ectoII cd) and LOVED that I followed my own vision of it. Well, that made me feel great and I totally understand now why she is worshipped, she deserves it.... Long drive back, I'm nuts and tired. Just wanted to share that. peace all, cyoakha grace O'Manion Music PO Box 198 Mill Valley, CA 94941 lanblind@teleport.com http://www.landoftheblind.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2001 10:04:27 EDT From: Dracovixen@aol.com Subject: NPR - Tori Amos For all you Tori fans out there, an mp3 of her new single has been floating around (yay! no waiting for the actual release date!), and if you care, here's a link to where you can get this delicious mp3... :) http://www.hereinmyhead.com/sounds/slg.html "Strange Little Girls" (Velvet Underground, I think), and we're all searching for her cover of "97 Bonnie and Clyde" (Eminem) which has gotten air play! I am so excited! Oh yeah, for the fans or potential fans that don't know already, her new album comes out September 18th, and it is not of new material, it is a cover album. She is reinterpreting songs originally sung by men, and giving them a female twist, though, apparently she hasn't changed any of the lyrics...I am so excited! Ok, I have to go back to my very busy and mundane life. Sorry that I haven' been saying much, but I don't have a whole lot of access to a computer, and it'll be liek that for a little while. Have a nice day everyone! Black Dove ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2001 15:08:25 -0400 From: "Datura Child" Subject: Re:Happy/Project Lo Hey Folks! I was at the Tin Angel to see Happy too. The show was great...but very, very LOUD! My friend and I made the mistake of sitting under one of the main speakers. Ears were still ringing the next day...but it was well worth it. I've never seen Happy live before...quite an experence. The new songs were good--the second one in patricular I thought was fantastic. I added some new CD's to my collection. And got to meet Happy afterwords (Yeah!). Good time all 'round. Bye for now, Megan P.S.--Did anyone who was there manage to remember the names of the new songs? _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2001 22:49:52 +0100 From: "Adam K." Subject: New stuff (Witness & Cara Dillon) In this week's Time Out, there's a review for the new Witness album, "Under a Sun", that concludes "This is a gorgeous, extremely accomplished album you should hear". A nearby ad for said album also includes the blurb by Uncut magazine, who gave it 5/5 and the quote "...a glorious rush of big tunes, surging choruses, effervescent guitars and universal lyrics". Well, that goes on my ever-growing shopping list. Incidentally, their website is now -- finally-- live, but is revealed to be one of those fussy, flash-heavy sites that does a lot but tells you very little. Still...nobody's perfect. Also reviewed is a singer who's new to me, someone called Cara Dillon. I mention her because the review presents her as someone highly ecto. She appeared on Sinead O'Connor's "Ghostland" project, and her eponymous debut on Rough Trade is described thus: "a work of conceptual maturiity, it is also a perfect vehicle for her lovely, clear vocal delivery; stylistically stone-traditional yet universal enough in emotional impact to win her a wide audience." The review concludes: "...this album is never less than front contender for folk album of the year". Someone else to look out for? adam k. np: Gentle Giant/Out of the Woods ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2001 16:27:01 -0700 (PDT) From: Ellen Rawson Subject: Re: New stuff (Witness & Cara Dillon) - --- "Adam K." wrote: > > Also reviewed is a singer who's new to me, someone > called Cara Dillon. She was on tour with the Waterboys back in June,if I recall at all correctly (and I may not). Oh, we did get the Peppercorn CD based on the Guardian's recommendation and hearing it at the listening post at the Bristol Virgin. (We were in Bristol for the Neil Gaiman signing.) Her voice is slightly reminiscent of Alanis Morrisette -- rather like the CD. (And I'm not an Alanis fan.) Ellen ===== "Literature stops in 1100. Not only did she do new stuff, she also hit on old stuff, like "Soap and Water", "Pearl," and "Red Shoes". Unearthed and recasted as acoustic folk songs, they allow Ms. Hersh to demonstrate how protean her yelping vocal style is, and how deft and complex she is with her guitar playing. Of course, one of the pleasures of going to a Hersh show is her fabulous story telling. When she talks about her kids, it makes me think just how damn cool it would be to have her as a Mom. She also revealed some of the story behind *Pearl*. You know that part where she sings about "a back like Marie?" Well, Marie was a good friend of hers, who had some serious health problems, and was legally blind. Because she was disabled, everyone else around her acted like they couldn't see her. So, in effect, Marie was Kristen's real life invisible friend. Another story had her talking about how she went to art school with an old Hollywood actress, Betty Hutton. Hutton called Kristen's rock and roll life, "showbiz!" She's a hoot. - --Craig P.S. Are any other ectophiles going to the 4:00pm Eliza Carty show this Sunday at Iota in Arlington??? ===== n.r.
