I did this because there was an amazing amount of hype about her: At first it was just a rave review for the album, then another, then the Guardian did full-page spread on her, but then I realised the album hadn't even come OUT yet.Nevertheless, I came across her cd in one of my trawls through the bins of Soho and...well, I guess it's okay. They go on about her voice, but I figure it's more of a sigh than anything, and although it's a very pleasant album, it's not one that grabs me. Still, kudos to her for persevering -- both her albums were self- produced, and that last one was cut on a tight budget, and then got nominated for the prestigous Mercury Prize. She does a lot of touring, and plays really intimate venues. I regret not seeing her live, as she's supposed to be really good. I also understand that a major label have bought that last one ("Little Black Numbers") and are set to re- release it. JULIANA HATFIELD has a thing or two to sing about music label woes. the first song off her first EP that she released after leaving MAMMOTH/ATLANTIC (PLEASE DO NOT DISTURB on the ZOE label, a subsidary of ROUNDER RECORDS) has the song SELLOUT with the lyrics "it's not a sellout, if nobody buys it; i can't be blamed if nobody likes it". i think her first song off of BED could also be interpreted as a kiss off to her former label. DOWN ON ME includes the lines "a masterpiece or a piece of shit; you're either stealing or you're taken; you're so down on me; i think it is a fad so i don't feel so bad anymore..." of course the songs could also be interpreted as a kiss off to an ex boyfriend, the same way AIMEE MANN's song NOTHING IS GOOD ENOUGH could be sung to either her music label, or one of her ex's. which reminds me i downloaded some songs off of JULIANA's unreleased album GOD'S FOOT, and they are pretty good. it's too bad ATLANTIC never released it and have no plans on releasing it. you'd think they would at least release it JAPAN where JULIANA is more "popular" (not that she doesn't have a following here in the STATES). whoops double negatives. sorry about that. irvin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Jul 2001 08:23:19 EDT From: Jessweiser24@aol.com Subject: Re: music label rants Oh! Some of you have sent donations to me and I wanted to express my humblest gratitude to you. There is no feeling in the world that can compare with that of being cared for. At this time, I'd like to ask that you all hang on to your money. It isn't that I don't need the help. In fact, I've probably never needed it more. But I'm working on a project for this very purpose. I'm compiling an EP of unreleased demos and/or oddities. There will be a couple of new things (rejects from my up-coming CD) and some old as well. A couple of people will help me in printing the CD's and with some artwork. These will not be manufactured, rather, reproduced individually on a consumer level. My proposal is that I make this CD available to the Ectophiles ONLY and you may order them, in exchange for a donation of any amount. That way, those folks who don't have money to spend may still afford a CD and those who can give more are free to do so. The people who've generously already offered donations will receive copies automatically of course. It's important to me that everyone gets something in return for their generosity. This is the one thing that I can give in the short term, until my next full-length CD is finished. I will let you know when it's ready for ordering. Incidentally.......Queen's "Death On Two Legs" was about a record label shark. Sherlyn and woj and I will be getting there on Friday afternoon sometime to set up camp and catch as much of the New Artist Showcase as we can. Many of the songs on Roseland are actually _better_ than than the studio album. I am not a seasoned sound engineer, so I cannot rave about the production quality, but it definitely sounded slick to my ears. Beth's voice is marvellous live, and the alternative versions of the songs (when done differently) , just _worked. Some kick-ass intros. Any Ectophiles make it to the concert? The only snippet I found was at: http://www.insound.com/_insound.cfm?path=%2Fannex%2Fsearchalpha%2Ecfm%3Fsearch by%3DN NASTASIA, NINA Label: Socialist An achingly lonesome voice and a dark, dark sensibility. Her new record, "Dogs," is rich with cello, accordion, violin, saw, piano, and guitar, and is wrapped in perhaps the most attractive booklet (letterpress lyrics, a hand-mounted snapshot) in recent memory. Produced by Steve Albini. Appearing live with Shellac in a city near you. and at least you can order the cd from there...highly worth it if you havent experienced EWS recently :) - -Jason n.p. It's late and way past my bed time, so I cannot write the post I'd like to about him, but I'd like to leave you with a post that another fan of his posted on a NYC board I happened to stumble upon on AOL tonight, and he and this board made many posts remembering this man I consider a legend. Rest in peace Harry, I miss you and your wonderfully entertaining shows. No one I have seen since has come remotely close. a fan forever, Mike *********** Posted on the AOL board: The Buroughs Subject: Remembering Harry Chapin Date: 7/16/01 12:06 PM Eastern Daylight Time From: HZryb Let us pause for a few minutes during our hectic routine that we call our daily lives and honor the memory of Harry Chapin, one of my heroes, who died in an automobile accident on the LIE 20 years ago today. He was only 38 years old. He was the principle organizer and guiding force behind World Hunger Year, and as he liked to say onstage "I do one show for me, and one show for the other guy." He truly was a recording artist who put his money where his mouth was. No doubt Harry would have been at the fore in the We Are The World Sessions. His voice was sorely missed on that recording. Harry was even posthumously awarded a Congressional Gold Medal for his outstanding humanitarian efforts I remember on the day Harry died, I was supposed to attend a benefit concert at Eisenhower Park that evening. I heard about the horrible accident on WNEW-FM in the afternoon. Truly a great loss for all of us. Harry remains, for me, one of the great lyricists who ever put notes to paperhis songs told stories, some serious, some frivolous, all entertaining. I remember hearing "Taxi" in my bedroom one day in 1972. There are very few songs that you can remember the very first time you heard them. This is one of them. Harry's imagery, the melody, the whole enchilada is perfect. His songs were like movies, very cinematic. His lyrics were powerful and his presentation evocative. I also really like "Better Place To Be" and for any of you who have teenaged girls please listen to "Tangled Up Puppet." It's guaranteed to raise a few emotions. Harry also had the guts to record a poem that his wife Sandy wrote, called "Cats in the Cradle." With my own travel schedule, I relate to that song better than most, and of course, Harry himself was speaking in the first person. It's hard to believe that 20 years have passed already since Harry's tragic demise. "Remember when the music was a glow on the horizon of every new-born day, and as we sang the sun came up to chase the dark away, and life was good, for we knew we could" "I aint here on business baby, I'm only here for fun!" There was no way I was going to miss an opportunity to see Happy again. I even re-arranged my seashore plans so that I could be at the concert. This time I ate dinner at Serrano's downstairs so that I could get a reserved table close to the stage. Anyway, the concert was great as usual. Happy had her left hand/wrist all bandaged, but was able to play keyboards with her right hand and maybe a little with the left hand (couldn't see) I can sympathize with her since I am a keyboard player myself. I thought the concert went very well. Happy and Project Lo did about 14 songs including Mercy St., Feed the Fire, 1 or 2 new Happy songs, and several Project Lo songs. Phil Kester did an excellent job on drums as he is not the regular ProjLo drummer. Bon and Hansford Rowe were awesome as usual. I got to talk to Happy and the band after the concert, etc. so it was a good night. Everyone there was well satisfied and wanted more. later, tom m. ps: MIRA will be at the Khyber Pass ( 1/2 block from Tin Angel) on August 7th. This is their first tour ever.
