I hope that doesnt happen tonight. The cut down POP version (whatever that is) of Mindspring I used last night does not offer to send E-mails in Simple Text. I think my Hotmail account uses Simple Text automatically. I guess well find out. I have had a miserable two months. If I offered a blow by blow account, you would be squatting beside me in the ashes and wailing. Here are a few highlights: Lightning struck my computer and took a couple of software programs and a few music compositions with it. Luckily, I had backed up within recent memory and thus saved my midi files and wave files. (Note: if you don't plug your modem connection into the surge protector the computer won't be protected) Two months ago I was kidnapped, had a kidney stolen, was forcibly addicted to heroine, and compelled to be an extra in pornographic films. I was somewhat taken aback by the insistence that I be an extra. I thought I was star material. But apparently I lacked the requisite star qualities, whatever those are. I spent many dull hours joylessly romping in hot tubs or forcing myself to ogle naked flesh as I sat in chaise longues beside pools at nondescript apartment buildings. I did manage to escape briefly and make a miserable trek to Oklahoma, where I attended the thirtieth year reunion of my high school class. My freedom was short lived, though. The Oklahoma mafia spotted me and shipped me back to a dreary apartment in Century City, where my servitude to the adult entertainment industry resumed. The stay in Oklahoma only heightened my feeling of oppression, as I gazed unflinching at the downward arc my fellow eighteen year olds and I were tracing. One consolation was that the jerks of dear old high school days were growing courtly and genteel as the years rubbed the sharp corners off their lives. My life of arty film-making continued until a dispute between a director and the biker dude providing the backing money in exchange for a production credit and perks ended in a spectacularly bloody death, with all the star material and production crew scattering from the Jacuzzi like cockroaches. I took the opportunity to keep moving east until I arrived back in Texas, where I promptly locked the door of my house and resumed reading the Ecto digests. I continue huddling in the ashes in my back yard, listening to skateboarding urchins, and cursing my very existence. Sorry about all the purple prose, it is a hereditary condition. Not changing the subject or anything, someone pointed out that Ms. Happy Rhodes might not care for financial assistance at this juncture of her life. If anyone knows that to be true, please speak up. Helping her out seems the logical thing to do. Its not like wed make her name her children after benefactors, even though the prospect of her offspring bearing fifty or sixty names apiece is entertaining. Jane Siberry and others have done such things--I'd easily pay a bit extra (say $25)for an advance signed copy--though I suppose asking for signed copies may just traumatize her hand more--though perhaps it could be good physical thereapy? Anyway--just an idea if she doesn't like the idea of taking charity for her surgery. Mitch and another ectophile have pointed out that Happy may not want us to assist her. I get a sense that Happy would be willing to let us knock her medical bill down some, but that is pulled straight out of the air. Intuition, I suppose. I do know there are others besides me who would like to help. Convincing Ms. Rhodes that this would be a good thing for her and for us could be more difficult than getting pledges from people. Anyone who has the ear of Ms. Rhodes might want to see how she feels about assistance. I do have at least one argument for Happy. A writer once wrote a song called Collective Heart. It is a metaphor for how an artist relates to the community around her. In the song, the brain equals the person at the top of the network, in this case, Happy Rhodes. The heart/blood vessels/arteries are physical and electronic links to those who support the artist (And that doesnt necessarily mean financial support. It could be emotional and psychological, too). And unnamed but implied are the toes and other body parts (Ill let you guys decide what body part you are.). This (I think) is fans, friends, and family. In a body, when there is some kind of deficit, the other body parts roles are to provide assistance to the body part in need. If the brain needs oxygenated blood, the toes and feet send extra blood up the line. And what is the reward for the toes and feet? Continuing survival of the collective-- blood being pumped down to the toes on command from the brain. Round the corner lives information I can turn around and give, Like a heart, recycling what comes in and pulsing out the breath we take to live. In Happys case the information comes in the form of songs, CDs, musical beauty, and funny posts about drunken airline pilots. Some people on this list have been reaping that reward for ten years. Others of us are newer but find that reward very attractive. I think people on this list are mature enough to realize Happy is not obligated to us in any way if we help her. Gifts are gifts; otherwise, wed call them bribes. I get the impression that many people (probably most) on Ecto dont want to intrude into her life any further than sending a thank you note now and then and wishing her good thoughts after putting her CDs on their stereos. Besides all the above, how can we ignore the synchronicity of the following lines from Collective Heart. This collective heart is rushing life to my hands. Ive droned on long enough. Im sorry that you will have to scroll to read this post. I have my reasons and excuses. If I can get one of my E-mail accounts to cooperate, Ill probably force you to read my reasons and excuses. I have been composing this e-mail over the past two days while being in the middle of taking care of other things. In the meantime a number of other excellent ideas have been put out there. I appreciate Lyle getting the ball rolling on this one. I like his suggestions of setting up and contributing to a fund for Happy. I also like his most recent post using the metaphor of the collective heart. None of us know for sure whether Happy would be pro or con to us providing her assistance. Unless she comes flat out and asks us not to do so, I suggest that we proceed forward in some positive manner. Sue's information on Sweet Relief was positive and she also offered an excellent suggestion. As Jeff Hanson suggested, Happy could do something like Jane Siberry did and as Marillion did for their last CD. They chose to go to their fan base to finance the recording of their most recent CD. If I am not mistaken, they were without a record deal and didn't want to immediately sign with another label. 12,000 of Marillion's fans sent in pre-order checks to finance the recording. If we did something like this for Happy she could use the funds for recording expenses or to pay off her medical bills. Marillion rewarded the fans in various ways to thank them for the pre-orders. While I know that we don't have 12,000 of us in the Ectophile community, I am sure that most, if not all of us, would be willing to purchase Happy's CD in advance of its release to help her out. Jeff's suggestion of $25.00 seems very reasonable. I have listed some more information on what Marillion did at the bottom of this post. Another option might be for some us with the capabilities to do so host a series of house and other benefit concerts for Happy. Phil and I spoke about it last night and we are willing to try and do something. Many of the musicians that subscribe to and participate on Ecto have benefited from our open-minded virtual community that embraces new and exciting artists. Ecto grew out of the love of Happy and her music. I feel quite confident that many musicians on this list might be quite willing to play a free benefit concert to help Happy. It would be a small way to repay her for how her music has touched them and has also opened them up to a solid supportive audience for their own music. Bill M. n.p. Coldplay _Parachutes_ Here is an excerpt from the Marillion web site. The site is located at www.marillion.com A Quiet e-Revolution As forward looking as their music has been the bands realization that the Internet is a powerful tool in both reaching their existing fans and reaching out to a new audience. This potential was first discovered back in 1997, when Mark Kelly contacted the band's Internet mailing list to advise fans that they could not financially justify a North American tour. The fans voluntary and immediate response was to rapidly raise over $60,000, which enabled Marillion to make the trip. Not something that happens to your average rock band...Following on from this, the band developed their web site, marillion.com, (which later became the title of their 1999 album) that has become a centre of operations to circulate information on releases and tour dates. The immense success and popularity of the site persuaded the band to think the previously inconceivable- to ask the fans to pay in advance for the new album- thus providing the funds to cover their recording costs. And with an incredible 12,000 pre-orders, their legion of followers more than played their part in making the concept a reality. An additional deal was then struck with EMI (who Marillion were signed to during the eighties) to market and distribute the finished product. "We've never had much trouble finding record deals. Paradoxically though, having a fan base as committed as ours provides the record company with a disincentive to market the records. They know our fans will be there on release, waiting to buy - even if they have to look under a stone to find it. So as the years have passed we have become less famous as there was little exposure. And that dilemma has led us to the point where we had a moment of clarity and empowered ourselves, and the feeling of helplessness disappeared. And we are still here with the ability to make records and with our self respect intact." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Jun 2001 23:11:14 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Some more ideas to help Happy Hi, Bill followed up: >As Jeff Hanson suggested, Happy could do something like Jane Siberry did >and as Marillion did for their last CD. She has her new album recorded, but she needs the money to get it pressed and ready for release. She figured out that 200 pre-orders would do it, and she is in the process of gathering those, both via her web site and at shows. I'm sure these aren't the only examples. >Another option might be for some us with the capabilities to do so host >a series of house and other benefit concerts for Happy. This is a great idea. I'd be more than willing to host a house concert in this vein, if any of the local ectophile musicians would like to donate their time. There may also be options for coordinating something with ectofest ... that one will take some more thought, but it is a possibility.
