I was afraid of that. :( I am SO tired of hearing this story, again and again. A wonderful, hard-working musician has a catastrophic medical event and winds up with an enormous bill because he or she had no insurance. I just heard it a couple weeks ago regarding Don Dixon, the talented producer, songwriter and musician who has worked with R.E.M., the Smithereens, Marshall Crenshaw, and many others. He had a heart attack and needed a quadruple bypass. You guessed it -- no insurance. His wife, singer Marti Jones, a marvelous singer in her own right, works as a part time substitute teacher. And since Don's no longer the "hot" producer he was in the '80s, it will probably be as difficult for them to pay off their staggeringly large medical bills as it will be for Happy. I suspect that right now, many ecto subscribers in other countries that do provide universal health care are thinking the U.S. "system" is pretty screwed up. And they'd be right. So, yes, I will donate to help Happy pay for her surgery. And you should too. But I also urge you, if you live in the U.S., to write your senators and member of congress and DEMAND THAT THE SYSTEM BE CHANGED so that artists and other self-employed people have the option to purchase reasonably priced health insurance. Even something with a $1,000 -- heck, a $5,000 --- deductible would have greatly benefited Happy, Don and countless others. - --Sue Trowbridge ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Jun 2001 13:46:53 EDT From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: SHarmer/CJunkies gig & M2O photo request Hi all, First a quick request for help from the vast collective Ecto mind: Can anyone guide me to a few decent images of Mary Margaret O'hara? I can't seem to find anything. I used to know of her website, but can't find that anymore either. If by chance, anyone has a scan of any promo photos or any image of her in jpeg form, I'd enjoy seeing them. Any help appreciated. After searching, all I've comie up with is her album cover graphic and one nice big photo with both her hands covering her face, hehe... I caught Sarah Harmer and Cowboy Junkies at the Cape Cod Melody Tent last weekend. Although it wasn't the quietest environment, the performances were great. (It occurred during a monsoon-proportion wind and rain storm in a big canvas tent.) The only time I'd heard Sarah Harmer before was at Meth and Woj's house-gig awhile back. At the time, I was impressed by her songwriting but found her voice pleasant but not captivating. That changed completely hearing her songs embellished with band accompaniment. Her vocals were far more dynamic and definitely grabbed me. She had a captivated audience and a fairly large following of her own there. I'm definitely going to check into her releases. The CowboyJunkies were playing plenty of the new album, which I already raved about last time. It was equally great, if not better live and some older material I had never really got a handle on, blew me away. Primarily the title cut of their "Lay It Down" album. This became a swampy 14 minute jam with Michael off in deep guitar space. At times it was easily as "out there" as early Pink Floyd. He even got a standing ovation after this lengthy guitar solo, something I've never seen happen at a Cowboy Junkies show. Actually, they wasted no time getting to heavier electric material by opening with "Murder In The Trailer Park," a tune rarely played anymore and usually reserved for late in the show when it was played. They're touring pretty extensively again and well worth checking out. And for any of you interested in live recording, they're totally cool with audio recording (only, no video). As long as you're respectful of those around you, you're welcome to set up a recording rig as elaborate as you like. Thanks for any help anyone can provide in regard to MMO'hara images. Hello everyone, I'd also like to wish the Ecto list a happy :) birthday. 10 years, and it's still pretty much a real community spirit one feels here. In addition to the valuable, important work that goes on here for the benefit of so many recording artists. I especially want to thank Woj and everyone else, list owner, hostmaster. It's a great thing to have The Guide to Good Music. Neile, you do so much: it was nice seeing you at ectofest west. I just can't imagine not being able to read and learn from the more frequent posters around here. Thank you all for keeping this thing going so strong. Damn straight, it's sad and depressing to me too. But things are so close now, I can just feel it. A snippet in a Volkwagon commercial, a lucky break somewhere, it feels like it could happen, finally. I continue to hold out hope that Happy can get a financial reward for all she's given. Something just. > I haven't been a very good Ectophile > for a very long time, [...] Well, I don't know quite what that means but it can't be anything serious. :) I probably haven't been "very good" either since I only lurk these days. I'm very happy for you, Vickie. You now have a worldwide radio station-the best one in the world, I might add. I love this internet thing :), being a 'phile has been quite the enriching experience, for the soul. Thank you for making me aware of "so many powerful beings...". > Thanks to those Kate Bush fans who took a > chance on Happy (starting with Mike Mendelson > and Larry Hernandez and Jeffy-With-The-Long- > Black-Hair) and who talked about her enough > to intrigue other Kate fans, [...] It was very easy to take the "chance" to learn about Happy. It is one of the significant experiences of my life. I just got back home, which is why this ectofest post is so late. After Santa Cruz, I went down to visit my home state Arizona for almost 2 weeks. Thank you Happy for coming and seeing us, and playing even after your unfortunate accident. I know she was unhappy about it, as she posted on her site, not being able to put on the show that she wanted to. When I met her I could see that she wasn't feeling very well, but it was gracious of her to come out and torture her hand by signing things. She signed my sentimental favorite album, _Rearmament_. It makes it all the more special how she tried anyway and did the best she could that night-I was thrilled. She gave us such a valiant effort. I got there late and only saw Jill and Veda open. Both of them were wonderful, especially, as others have posted, Veda. I am fortunate in that I'll be seeing Veda again next month at the Vancouver Folk Fest when she'll be playing with the Rheostatics; now that oughta be interesting. :) Seeing Happy live in person was the last thing I needed to do-I have now stood at the Foot of God (London, when I saw Kate). I have touched the hand of Jesus and looked into her darling eyes (when I saw Jane Siberry in San Fran). And now I have met The Holy Ghost, the mystery, the "spooky chick!" What else is there for an old love-hound/'phile to have to do in life-the trinity journey is complete. I can peacably die now. ;) Meredith! my goodness, I am forever in your debt, for putting up in your gallery bottom row the most aptly titled "Greeting her adoring public" picture, of me greeting Happy! Thank you meth for capturing the moment. For having gotten there so late, I was extremely fortunate to have been able to worm my way into the front row on the right (Happy's left). Due to the couple inexplicably leaving right before Happy came on, I was able to slide even closer to the center, enough so that exactly half of me can be seen standingly ovating in Happy's "leftside view" picture. :) Not being an overly sociable type, I'm sorry for not making a better effort to meet other 'philes who attended. THANK YOU Shelly, so much. For getting me the room at the Econolodge! And of course for bringing Happy to the west coast. I didn't mean for this message to be this long, but I had to share what a wonderful time I had at ectofest, and being an ectophile. It makes for a rewarding life, knowing all this music. The ebbs and flows of following deserving artists so closely: I've gone from being deva- stated upon learning of the deaths of some of my heroines, most recently notable the great Kirsty MacColl, to being given life anew by being a part of the successes of some wonderful new artists, such as Jorane, and others whose success I wish so much for these days. Being able to have heard and met Kirsty and Jorane in my life, as well as others, is a benefit of being on this list. Thanks again, fellow 'philes. Thanks again, Happy. Happy b'day Ectolist. Pravatiner" Subject: Power of Persuasion? It's my understanding that after the tribute album was released to help defray Victoria Williams' medical expenses, some of the profits were used after the immediate purpose had been served, to start a foundation to help other musicians with their medical bills. To help with situations like the one Happy faces right now, is precisely what that foundation is there for. She should be encouraged, somehow, to look into what it could do for her. Perhaps ectophiles could donate to it. Intuitively, any hangup she may have about accepting assistance (cf. Lyle's post) could well extend equally to any passing of the hat amongst ourselves, so I am not sure that that will necessarily be the sure-fire solution. Mitch ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Jun 2001 01:04:44 -0400 From: Philip David Morgan Subject: Jessica Weiser w/Nylon & Steel - June 23 - many thanks Good Eve- sorry, I meant Good Morning (this is what you get when you come home after midnight and get online to relay the news): I'm a little bushed right now and need my sleep soon, but I _did_ want to bless and thank Jessica Weiser for opening for Nylon & Steel on Long Island last night (Unitarian Universalist Society of South Suffolk, Bay Shore/Long Island, New York). I wasn't quite sure if it was right to suggest N&S to Jessica when she asked for gig suggestions - would the children of the Grateful Dead (whose spirit lives on to some degree in Nylon & Steel) actually welcome and embrace a resident of Planet Ecto? I can happily say the answer is "yes." Jessica held the small audience rapt for virtually all of her 45-minute set (highlights included "The Drive," "Left," "What Can I Say?," "[Dis]illusion," and "Consolation"), and on top of that, Jim (Strike) Frazzitta of N&S was among those calling for an encore! (He also bought _What Has Happened_ and _Transition_. Actually, Jessica did very well in the CD sales department, selling out all the copies she brought with her of _What Has Happened_. _Transition_ and _Becoming_ also did well.) And on top of _that_... she may come back to Long Island for another N&S show in the future... Jessica and Lyle, many thanks and blessings for coming our way, and especially during the celebration of Ecto's 10th birthday. (Note to David/Arrow: if Jessica recommends a few more people on our list, we could end up organizing an "EctoShed" night at Conklin Barn. We've gotta get a few other local lights - say, Paulette Boucher or Cathy Kreger - to sign on if it happens. Keep it in mind. It's doable.) For those of you with the connections to bring Jessica to _your_ town, just two words: _don't hesitate._ Sweet dreams, Philip David (over to you, Cyo - we'll leave the Barn lights on for you) 6/24/2001 npimh: part of the Shang Shang Typhoon score for the Shoji Kawamori anime _Spring and Chaos_ - --- The Polly Stephanson Project, currently at: http://members.dencity.com/SakuraNation/ but watch for a move this summer! - --- "Go back and finish your oatmeal." ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #176 **************************
