Maybe that will be my work project for Monday, getting all that Real stuff off and getting an up-to-date WinAmp going. I had both before, but actually preferred the old version of Real Jukebox. Then again, I've also been reading about some of the reporting/logging/cookie activity of Real Networks (at www.grc.com, if memory serves), and even though I turned off all logging, I'm still sceptical of those products. The EFW weekend was a glorious start to a much-needed respite. Everyone that has posted about the EFW has given a wonderful recounting of the event. I would just like to add my words of appreciation to the chorus as well. Thank you Shelly for your hard work and dedication to the project! You did an excellent job of pulling this all together. Thank you Michael. You were fantastic the day of the show. I'm sure that you were a major behind the scenes support to Shelly prior to the EFW day as well. Thank you Phil and JTe for opening Dragondale to all of us to enjoy for the day of the house concert. On a side note Phil, you can now add stand-up to your numerous other talents. Excellent MC work my friend! Thank you Neile for sharing your poetry with all of us. I am so pleased that you accepted our invite to participate in the EFW event. Thank you Meth and Woj for your inspiration, help, and advice. Thank you to all of the Ectophiles that attended both events. We couldn't have done it without you. It was also really wonderful to meet so many of you in person after getting to know you in our virtual fuzzy blue habitat. Much love and appreciation goes out to all of the EFW performers. Happy was truly amazing! So were Bob, Carl, and Eric. Happy was such a trooper and put on a magical performance considering the circumstances of the day. She is a beautiful, talented, and gracious lady. Veda was remarkable. She is a unique and gifted artist. She is also a very sweet person. I know having Happy and Veda on the same bill was a major thrill for most of us. Jill Tracy was a very pleasant surprise for me. I was unfamiliar with her prior to the show. Great choice Shelly! I loved her vampy, decadent Euro cabaret style. Anna Maria, I feel that you would really like her music. What can I say about Cy that I haven't said already? Now many of you out there know why I have been so effusive in my praise of her as a performer and singer. Her posse was wonderful too! Wendy Rule was enchanting and haunting. She wove a magical spell that set the mood for the remainder of the weekend. Here's to many more Ecto gatherings! Bill n.p. Jill really wanted to play the grand piano, but it was more important to her that she be able to face the audience. - - Shelly ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Jun 2001 16:07:16 -0500 From: "Mark Harbott" Subject: New stuff (to me at least) Hey everyone I wanted to ask opinions on the following artists if any of you know them..any suggestions if I shoudl check them out and if so, which albums to look for : Emm Gryner Rachael Sage Beth Hirsch Hannah Fury I've read some good reviews but thought I wold turn to you guys...thanks. Okay, so maybe it was more of a metaphorical redressing - but still, I tried. :) > Wait, you flew from Australia to Virginia to see disappear fear, and > then went back home?!?!? Wow, you must get some sort of award for Heh - I'm flattered that you think that I'm that crazy. Close, but not quite true. I only flew from Vancouver to Baltimore for the weekend, then back again. > Wouldn't mind hearing a review when (if???) you ever recover your sanity. The show was great. For those of you who don't know, disappear fear are (were) two sisters from Baltimore, SONiA Rutstein and Cindy Frank. They stopped touring together after the birth of Cindy's son Dylan a few years back. SONiA's doing solo stuff now (mostly billed as "SONiA of disappear fear") but once in a while Cindy will join her for a reunion show. I've seen SONiA do the solo thing a bunch of times but never with Cindy. And while I've loved every solo show I've seen, hearing the harmonies these two sisters produced up on that stage really took me back to '94, when I was first discovering that there's more to contemporary folk music than just the Indigo Girls. What a trip. I'd never been to the Birchmere - it's a nice room. We got there early and snagged table right at SONiA's feet. The venue was pretty full, and everybody was very appreciative. I didn't note the set list, but it included most of the old df standards - they did stuff from all the df albums as well as a few songs from SONiA's solo albums. Two nice long sets, and they played every song that I'd hoped to hear. I kind of felt the way I did at my first Indigo Girls concert - happy, amazed and so grateful to be there. It was a pretty special night. Album news - SONiA's got a new live album coming out called "Live at the Down Home" which was recorded in (I think) Johnson City TN. It'll be officially available in September but will be available at shows before then. There's a label deal in the works as well (unfortunately I can't remember with which label). I hope this helps make her music more easily available, because this woman has a message that more people need to hear. Yargh. I don't know what your taste in music is, but I guess you're already interested. As for Rachael Sage, both her new album, Painting of a Painting, and her previous one, Smashing the Serene, are excellent. You can't go wrong with either of those. The 3 Emm Gryner cds I have are fairly different. Public is the most produced, the closest to mainstream pop/rock. Science Fair is hard to describe. It has a less produced feel and is more eclectic. I love her latest, Dead Relatives, which is acoustic, often solo, very open.
