Once you click on "enter the gallery" you'll see the shots from Saturday night. Select the next Section and click "show" to see the shots from Sunday. BIG thanks to JeffW and woj for their help in getting this set up. Some notes on the photos: I used no flash while taking shots of performances as they were happening. As a result, the later the shot, the more I had to boost the gain, which led to more blurriness... I'm still trying to figure this whole thing out, but I think I managed to get some okay ones for all that. (I didn't post the *really* bad ones. :}) If you want a copy of any of the photos, please observe the requests set forth at the bottom of each gallery. It took a massive exchange of email with their tech support before anyone could figure out what I should do to download an RJ2 that would stay there. RJ2 is a prodigious memory eater and lag-maker. Windows Media Player 7 is at least as bad. Among this sort of software, I enthusiastically recommend Winamp. It is very memory-efficient and does everything else the other two do at least as well as they do it. Its only imperfection is that it doesn't have a CD ripper built in, but on the Winamp site, I somehow made it to a link for downloading a ripper program called CDex, which works very well indeed. Hi, You've viewed the photos ... now hear the story. :) This is long, but hopefully some of you will find it interesting. I wrote up a comprehensive trip report for family and friends, and thought I'd send along the musical bits to you all. It's been a while since I've filled up an ecto digest all by myself! Wednesday, June 6: Divas Night as Espresso Gardens, San Jose After woj and I flew into San Jose, we killed a few hours at the Winchester Mystery House (e-me if you want the details of that), then headed over to the nearby Espresso Gardens cafe, where Pipa Pinon, Cyoakha, and Wendy Rule were to participate in "Divas Night". When we got there, sound check was still in progress. Wendy's 10-year-old son Reuben remembered us from when they were here a couple weeks back, and since she was busy we got to amuse him for a while (or, more accurately, be amused by him - he's a very bright, funny kid). We met Cyoakha, and also Phil Hudson. Phil had been a great help to me as I planned our trip, and it was great to meet him. We also saw again Bill Mazur, whom we had met last fall when we were in San Francisco. Pipa Pinon started off the evening, after Wendy Rule got things going by casting a Circle, as all good Wiccan priestess singer/songwriters will. :) Pipa is from Santa Cruz, and was accompanied by the most incredible bass player I have ever seen. He managed to make a four-string electric bass sound like several guitars, and it was simply amazing. Pipa herself has a very beautiful voice, much like Happy Rhodes' high range. Their sound was very rich, and languid, and perfect for my brain-dead state (at the time it was almost 8 pm local time, which was almost 11 pm Eastern time, and I'd been up since 6 am after not much sleep the night before with pre-travel jitters). Cyoakha came up next, after a lengthy break while her five-piece band got set up: keyboards, djembes, tablas, sitar, didgeridoo, guitar, bass, harmonium, and Cy's laundry basket full of toys. I've always liked her trance-tribal music, but I wasn't prepared for how powerful it would be in live performance, nor for just what a complete cynical goofball Cy is in person. (This would become ever more apparent over the weekend. :) Her set woke me up, too, which was a good thing. Wendy Rule closed things out with a good set of music, accompanying her rich, strong voice with her acoustic guitar. To end things she brought Cyoakha's band back onstage with whatever percussion instruments they could find (and Krystov brought back his didg), to open up the Circle again. Even Reuben jumped on the djembe - the kid has rhythm! They jammed for a little while, and brought the house down. I left *really* looking forward to the house concert at Phil's on Sunday, since I knew that the jamming goodness would have a chance to happen again. Saturday, June 9: EctoFestWest, Kuumbwa Jazz Center, Santa Cruz After checking out the famed Mystery Spot (again, e-me for the details if you care) and finding the local Circuit City to buy a bigger memory card for my digital camera, we managed to find the Kuumbwa Jazz Center. Tamar Boursalian had come down from Seattle with Neile Graham and Jim Gurley, and we hung out in a nearby cafe for a while leading up to the show, catching up. The line to get into the place started growing pretty early, so we ended up waiting outside for a while. But that wasn't a big deal, since that way we got to see the ectophiles as they arrived, and we also got EFW posters as part of the "early bird special". :) There was quite a buzz, too, about the horrible news that Happy had seriously hurt her hand just that morning, and there was a question whether she would even be able to play. It appeared as though she was going to soldier on as best she could. Two Loons For Tea, however, weren't as lucky -- they were stranded in the Houston airport courtesy of Tropical Storm Allison, and wouldn't be able to make the performance. When the doors finally opened, we found that Phil's wonderful wife J'Te had saved a bunch of seats right up front for the ectophiles in attendance, and I somehow ended up smack in the center of the second row. There was a flurry of introductions and excitement and experiencing the Iron Horse-like bathroom line (i.e. the guys had to wait too, hah!), and then finally the music started. Wendy Rule, in attendance to hear the music too started things off by casting a Circle, which was a great way to get things going. Cyoakha's band was first on the bill. It was the same lineup as Espresso Gardens, with the addition of a fiddle player. The set was also similar, though somehow even more energetic and intense. It got the evening off to a fine start. While the band and crew scurried around clearing the stage and setting up for the next set, Neile Graham stood in the middle of it reading some of her prose and poetry. I'd never had a chance to hear her read, though I've liked her poetry very much, so this was a real treat. I was really glad that the EFW crew took the opportunity to get her up on stage for a bit. It was kind of funny, though -- Phil was right, the whole scene *was* like something out of a Marx Brothers movie. :) Neile didn't let it affect her presentation at all. Jill Tracy was next, a San Francisco-based artist who had brought two members of her group, the Malcontent Orchestra. I found it odd that she played an electric piano when there was a Yamaha Grand sitting there right behind her, but whatever works, I guess. She was accompanied by two dapper men in suits, one on drums and another on upright bass. She's basically the cabaret singer who would greet you at the gates of Hell: there is definitely a gleefully evil twist to her lyrics, and I enjoyed her set quite a bit, though I wouldn't expect to listen to a CD very much, so I didn't buy one. Intermission followed, during which I availed myself of the excellent vegetarian chili on sale in the back, and said hello to even more people. The show was just about a sellout, which was great to see. I was particularly interested to learn that the couple sitting in front of us had never heard of any of the musicians on the bill, and only decided to go because they'd seen a poster around town and thought it sounded like an interesting way to spend an evening. (I noted quite a few CDs in their hands as they went out. :) Next it was Veda Hille's turn to take the stage. I was almost beside myself by that point, as it had been almost a year and a half since I'd last gotten to hear her play. She opened on the tenor guitar with "INSTRUCTIONS", then moved to the glorious grand piano and did a set of songs _Field Study_, interspersed with some songs that really allowed her to cut loose on the piano, including the loosest rendition of "Driven" that I've ever heard. She remarked after that song that she wanted to take that piano with her everywhere, and play it every night for the rest of her life. After each song the applause got louder, until the standing ovation at the end of her set which brought her back for the first encore of the evening, a stunning version of the hymn "Tuktiaktuk" from _Field Study_. I was amazed at the reception she got. There were quite a few die-hard fans in the audience (heck, you can't get much more die-hard than Neile and myself :), but far more people had either never seen her live or had never heard of her -- and after her set, you couldn't get anywhere near the merchandise area. She was feeling it, too -- she was relaxed and having fun, and her performance conveyed the sheer enjoyment she was taking in the entire experience. She told me afterwards that it was so good to play in a place full of "people who care". In fact, she said the sweetest thing I heard from the stage all night: she mentioned how great it was to play for the ectophiles, those people who have been supporting her and showing up at her shows for years mentioning the ecto connection, and congratulated us on our ten years on the Net. Finally, the moment came: Happy's very first performance on the West Coast. Her left hand was encased in a bandage, her ring finger splinted: she had been cutting a cable tie off a box that morning with a Leatherman tool that slipped, and she had severed a tendon. Yowch. She had had to rework her set and teach her guitar player some new parts as a result -- she couldn't play the guitar at all, and had to severely restrict the left-hand parts she played on the keyboards. Still, though, she did a great set. She started off with the very appropriate "Feed The Fire" (the tribute version), then moved through songs spanning her career, including two brand-new songs. I'm sure I'm going to forget something, but I know she did "Out Like A Lamb", "Given In", "I'm Going Back", "Just Like Tivoli", "Down, Down", and "All Things (Mia Ia Io)", closing out the main set with "Roy". The band was great, too -- Eric, her new guitar player added a bit more of a rocking edge than we're used to, but it worked. And That Voice ... I had quite a good time stealing glances around me, to see the look on people's faces as they experienced it in live performance for the first time: that "oh my god, how does she DO that" expression that we've all worn at least once when in the audience at one of her shows. Naturally, she got a standing ovation too -- and closed the show with a wrenching new song, followed by the also appropriate "Serenading Genius". After a good amount of time afterwards hanging out, talking to audience members and Veda and Happy, the evening came to an end. I must admit to a feeling of awe at the whole thing ... that some ectophiles who were inspired by the insanity Chuck and I inflict upon ourselves each summer went ahead and did it on their own, and put on one hell of a show. And the weekend wasn't even over yet. (It occurred to me later that Wendy never opened the Circle she'd cast... I wonder if the jazz musicians sitting on stage at the Kuumbwa this summer will feel anything different while they're up there. :) Sunday, June 10: Dragondale House Concert, Boulder Creek, CA Sunday dawned bright and sunny, just like every other day in Northern California. No wonder they don't bother having the Weather Channel on TV at the Brookdale Lodge. :) woj and I headed over to Phil's place rather early to help set up, and as promised, J'Te put us right to work. woj ended up helping Phil get the studio cleared out and the stage set up, and I did various things as I was pointed to them. The music was officially set to begin at 2 pm. Members of Cyoakha's band were milling about, as they had stayed there the previous night; Wendy Rule and Reuben appeared after having crashed at J'Te's friend's house nearby; and there was even a tent pitched in the fire grove - -- I never did find out who that belonged to. One of my assigned tasks ended up being to chaperone Reuben and Sarah, a kid belonging to some other musician (again, I never did figure out who) as they checked out Boulder Creek, out back of the property. I wasn't aware at the time that this would involve slithering down a rocky hill and keeping Reuben from falling to his death, as he was one-handed since he refused to put his brand-new iguana puppet into his pocket. Aieee. Everyone survived, though. This was a very good thing on many levels, not least of which was that I would never, ever want to be the one responsible for a witch's kid getting hurt, no matter *how* benevolent she purports to be! Eventually people started showing up and staking out spots in chairs in the Sun Circle out front of the stage. As this was going on Phil pulled me aside and informed me that by unanimous vote between himself and woj, I had been elected emcee for the day, because I've done it before and Phil had had quite enough in that role the previous evening (plus he was performing, on top of running sound all day and had quite enough to do). Yack. Okay, Phil, since you've been so cool to me, I'll do it. Fortunately, as the day went on and things got progressively more chaotic with regard to the schedule, emcee duties became superfluous, and by the time the maximium number of audience members had been achieved in the evening, I didn't have to go anywhere near the stage. Yay. The day was jam-packed with music, sun, beer, good company, and lots and lots of food. A friend of Bill Mazur's from San Francisco who asked me to introduce him as Amory Blue (though his real name is Dan) started things off with a nice set of acoustic music. Then Phil's neighbors, a trio called Previously Lost Dogs followed with some post-hippie, rather Dead-like songs that I ended up liking quite a bit. (They started off as a duo, then their fiddle player arrived halfway through.) After this Phil Hudson and Bill Mazur did their own thing, and a very good thing it was, too. Their music is sort of "English fantasy folk", as woj called it. They both have very fine voices. To round out their set, Phil accompanied his 17-year-old stepdaughter Betsy on a great rendition of "Angel From Montgomery", and then she did a standard from the 30's a cappella. She's got a really good, strong voice. Next came the segue into the evening portion of the festivities. More people had arrived, and every time I went to the food table there was new stuff on it. Wendy Rule cast another circle wearing a stunning leather mask someone in the audience had loaned her then did a short set of her own, with a promise to do more songs later on. Then Pipa Pinon, this time with her full band in tow, took the stage as the twilight started to deepen. I had been wondering if the additional instrumentation would detract from the impact of the solo bass accompaniment, but that turned out not to be the case at all. I bought her most recent CD, and talked to her for a bit afterwards. It appears that she might come east next year, at which time I'd love to have her here for a house concert. Finally, Cyoakha's band set up all their stuff, and closed out the night with a brief, yet frenzied set. The amplified music had to stop by 10 pm, so unfortunately Cy had to bear the brunt of the accumulated scheduling weirdness of the day. But she managed to get in her most appropriate song, "Church Of The Holy Trees", which contains the chorus "in the church of the holy trees/I get up when I please/I worship on my knees/sheltered underneath". Just the kind of thing that goes through your head when you're standing in a redwood grove. :) For her last song she called Wendy up to the stage, and the kids Reuben and Sarah found drums to bang on, and everyone started a tribal jam that eventually morphed into the a version of Cyoakha's interpretation of "Feed The Fire" from the Dectopia project. Wendy had no clue what song it was, so she was just following whatever Cyoakha sang, and since Cy has never quite been sure of the lyrics anyway, it was pretty much unrecognizable until Cy started running through the audience yelling "Feed the fire!" into a kid's toy karaoke microphone. (Probably one of those "you had to have been there" things... :) Afterwards people moved over to the fire grove, where a bonfire was blazing. Wendy brought her guitar and, as promised, finished her set, completely acoustic and in the most perfect setting imaginable for her music. She even told the story of Innanna, before she sang her song based on the legend. She is a remarkable storyteller, and in a weekend full of highlights, that one stands out ahead of the rest. Once Wendy was done, things wound down pretty quickly. woj and I said our goodbyes, and took our leave of Dragondale. What an incredible setting for the end of an incredible weekend. Once again, thanks to all who made it possible. Stay tuned for announcements about ectofest 2001 - now that EFW is past it's time to start making your plans for that! As I said before we've got a *really* tough act to follow this year, but we're going to do our best. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #167 **************************
