The setting wasn't particularly good for it, what with the set change going on directly behind her and the audience taking the non-musical interlude as a chance to stretch and talk, but it was good to hear Neile read her work. We even got one of my favorites (Sheela-na-gig), which was a slight surprise as it's not a G rated poem. I was hoping for The Skin of Our Teeth (one of my favorites), but was happy for anything. Oh, also that creepy song/story about Wolverine. neal I recall looking onto the stage at one point during Neile's reading and seeing a scene right out of a Marx Brothers movie: Neile, this calm, grounded and graceful woman, reading deeply lyrical and moving poetry, deliberately oblivious to the five or six people crawling all over the stage in a frantic display of stage deconstruction, stepping over and around each other with all kinds of bizarre pieces of equipment....it reminded me of the straight role Margaret Dumont always played in the Marx Bros films. p ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 10:25:15 -0600 (MDT) From: Neal Copperman Subject: PJHarvey on WHFS, take 2 After I posted this info, I got e-mail asking if I was going to tape this and a hope for a trade. Too much... too much... The weekend was rich with meeting humans whose names and musical penchants I already knew (and some I didn't); with wonderful, wonderful music; and with the smell of mossy earth and tall trees that stretch my eyes to look up. And then there was Happy--my first time to hear her in person--hopefully not my last. My expectations were high and she exceeded them as I had guessed she would really, despite the pain in her hand. (Regarding her injury, I believe Happy's account: She was sitting on the beach, enjoying the beauty of the Pacific waves. The sound of the waves was "Cut...tendon...cut...tendon." So she did....) I first heard Happy from Building the Colossus and the first two songs that hooked me were Tivoli and Down. She sang both of those and I was in heaven (or gliding through salt and sea--same thing). 2 new songs that I recall: One Among Many and The Chosen One. The last one had me in tears and I'm glad she finished her encore set with Serenading Genius to bring us all back to the celebration of Happy. Veda Hille is one HOT musician! I had seen her previously with a band (also a memorable performance), but she doesn't need a band. I had not seen Cyoakha or Jill Tracy previously and enjoyed both (very diverse!) sets. THANK YOU THANK YOU to Shelly and her husband, Phil, and Bill M. for doing it all! And to the others (Cyoakha! J'Te!) who fulfilled this wish beyond my dreams. No end to the musical wealth..The house concert on Sunday added more to the musical and experiential high. (I met my first banana slug.) Pipa Pinon's music was an unexpected pleasure. She has a limited number of her first cd available, so get it before it's gone. I have heard it and it is wonderful. Her vocal style, backing band, and playfulness all appeal to me. She also has the required excellence in lyrical poetry--er, poetic lyrics. (No comparisons to others come to mind, testifying to her uniqueness.) Wendy Rules! She is an entrancing presence and even more so when singing her lusty lows and soaring highs. Apparently she sold out of one of her cds before I got to it. I figure it must be the best one since it is sold out, so maybe she can get some more made. I was also pleasantly surprised to hear Phil Hudson and Bill Mazur's performance. Although they are men , they both have soft, and pleasing vocal styles. On a more personal note, thank you to Phil and J'Te for their hospitality both at the house concert and for the Friday evening visit. Thank you to the other ectophiles (not necrophiles) who were so open and welcoming and actually seemed to recognize the name of this rather lurkish person (me). You know who you are. Glenn referred to my outburst as "juvenile" and "embarassing" -- comments which, at first, really got my back up. On reflection, though (and this time having the sense to count to ten) he was partially right: It was juvenile to express what was basically a knee-jerk reaction in such a fashion and I am kind of embarassed that my words could get away from me like that. He also, meanwhile, referred to it as "ignorant", and until I can get clarification on that, I'll have to reject that accusation. I checked for a web page, and there is actually a nice one out there now. http://members.nbci.com/g_limbo/ It says she has an album only being sold at shows (how typical) called Dub Natural. It apparently contains dub versions of songs from her upcoming album. Many of the titles are recognizable from the songs I heard in VA. Is there anyone in CA who is going to one of her shows? I am interested in getting the CD and would like to make arrangements.
