Hmm, you'd think the coordinator would be able to come up with a complete list of people who played, but somehow, Phil has missed a few notable performers. Phil himself played a great set - a mix of traditional tunes, covers and some of his own compositions. I can't remember the exact title of my personal favorite, other than that it included the word "wanker", and so totally summed up Phil's humor. As occasional MC at both EctoFest and the house concert, Phil was consistantly hilarious. It was a very nice surprise that he also sang nicely. His step-daughter also sang two songs. She had a very strong voice. >(Ectos; check out Pipa! Pipa was a very exciting find, and her bass player (credited as co-creator of all their music) was phenomenal. My mind is overloaded and I can't think of a good way to describe her set, though the interlude of enthusiastic gibberish and the exchange of animal noises between her and Cy were some of the days highlights. >Cy's "Church of the Holy Trees" was very wonderfully appropriate, given the >location. Land of the Blind seemed to have worked themselves into a pretty good frenzy by the time they got to play Sunday night. It was a shame they had to cut their set short, as they were on quite a trip. The finale of the plugged in portion of the house concert had Wendy Rule joining LotB for an improv spin on their version of Feed the Fire. Particularly interesting as Cy has never been that up on the lyrics, and Wendy had never heard the song before :) Didn't seem to matter as they just kept picking apart the phrases and echoing them back at each other, until Cy relinquished the stage to Wendy and wandered around the yard yelling "Feed the Fire". >Wendy topped the night's events with a beautiful performance offstage around >a blazing fire in one of the redwood groves, combining her songs with >stories and legends. I had mentioned that Wendy was a magnificent storyteller, and this setting was ideal for her recounting of the legend behind the song Inanna on her latest album. >I'd really like to get feedback from folks there on making this concept >smoother next time; lots of folks graciously came and gave thanks, saying >how much they enjoyed themselves, but I would also like to hear what didn't >work for people there, what we can do to improve any future events, and >really what just plain sucked! I loved the whole day and thought it went off quite well. The only things I'd do different would be personal ones. Like devoting more time to the artists I like and less time to the artists I didn't like as well. (If you need help figuring out which artists I like for future shows, I'll be happy to provide assistance.) (for the record, it was i, i admit it, that blurted out "we paid extra" when veda commented on the half of the audience that got to stare at her backside when she played piano- i was in a good mood .) i agree with the statement that "field study" doesn't even scratch the surface of the intensity of her live performance. veda's entire collection is now sitting at home, save the one cd she was already out of. finally, finally, finally, after all these years, happy rhodes- live. i brought with me two people who had never heard happy before. both semi-pro musicians that were just dumbfounded by that voice. happy starts letting loose on "feed the fire" they both look at me and say "how the hell does she do that?" and i very happily use the well known line "it's just one of those great wonders of the universe." as a vocal music-educated kinda person, i've always wanted to study how happy sings to see the different vocal modes she employes to get that range and was stunned to see that she does all of it in only a slightly modified chest voice (okay, too techie- simply put, she belts from her lowest note to her highest note.) with a couple of voices classes she could easily add another octave or two! happy's new band is obviously a group of long time performers, who have added quite the rock tinge to her music, which may be to her advantage for gaining a wider audience. the new songs performed were wonderful, as were the reinterpretations of some of my favorites. i hope happy's hand surgery goes well, it would be a terrible loss if she's unable to play guitar anymore. my biggest gripe- she played too damn short a set. i needed at least three hours . i wish i could have stuck around at the end to finally meet happy, and all; but i had a two hour drive home, and two absolutely wiped companions to deliver. sunday @ dragonsdale (also known as j'te & phil's garden). this was way cool. i packed up my two companions from the night before, plus one other and we made the trek to boonies above santa cruz. the music was wonderful, and i heartily add my vote for michelle garcia's set, as well as the previously lost dogs. i was grateful that wendy did a "tease set" so my friends could experience her as we wouldn't be able to stay til the end (did it ever actually end or are there still people camped in your garden phil?) oh yeah, daniel vee lewis, pipa's bassist, proved once and for all that lead guitars are totally optional when you've got a bassist that can jam! my god, he must of dropped a couple of pounds from that workout! i'm going to send phil off some suggestions to make life easier if he ever plans to take something of this magnitude on again, but i think all of us that attended will agree it was one hell of a day! it was one hell of a weekend to be sure. phew! troy - -- "I called your name last night; to keep my lips from trembling" - - Deborah Pardes ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Jun 2001 14:22:01 -0700 From: "Shelly DeForte" Subject: RE: ectofest west weekend > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org]On Behalf Of Troy > J Shadbolt > Sent: Wednesday, June 13, 2001 12:11 PM > To: ecto@smoe.org > Subject: ectofest west weekend > > > hi there. > > i've been waiting to let this past weekend truly settle into my mind > before even attempting to write. the sheer volume of new music > experienced is just now becoming clear. > > ectofest - the night. i must first say that as a venue, i have always > hated the kuumba jazz center mostly because they rarely clean the place; > but since this wasn't a kuumba produced event, it appears they made a > decent attempt to clean it up. the size of the venue was near perfect, > and i was very pleased to see that it was quite full (the powers-that-be > probably have better numbers, but i'd say that it was about 90-95% > filled.) I have to agree. It's been an odd fact of ectofest that Happy hasn't been the highlight for me. (Though I think I liked her set more than anything else at ectofest last year. Susan & Sloan stole the show the year before. Not that Happy's sets aren't great...) I've seen Veda a bunch of times, but she was totally on that night. A big part of that was probably the piano. After one song, she said she wanted that piano at every show, and she clearly loved it. She was playing so hard and passionately, it was really amazing. >for the >record, it was i, i admit it, that blurted out "we paid extra" when veda >commented on the half of the audience that got to stare at her backside >when she played piano- i was in a good mood .) Heh, that was a great quip :) BTW, missing from the line-up reviews was Neile Graham's unadvertised poetry readings. The setting wasn't particularly good for it, what with the set change going on directly behind her and the audience taking the non-musical interlude as a chance to stretch and talk, but it was good to hear Neile read her work. We even got one of my favorites (Sheela-na-gig), which was a slight surprise as it's not a G rated poem. I was hoping for The Skin of Our Teeth (one of my favorites), but was happy for anything. Oh, also that creepy song/story about Wolverine. neal ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Jun 2001 21:30:37 -0600 From: Neal Copperman Subject: Interesting Amy Denio shows (Seattle) This looks kind of intriguing....
