Unforgettable. it is truly incredible to hear her do that live, i agree. i was lucky enough to catch her twice on the field study tour - once right at the beginning and once a month or so ago (heck, we share a hometown, i could have seen her a lot more if i'd been on my toes :). both times the performance was basically identical - she's obviously someone very concerned with the shape of her performance, and has reached a level of `clout' where she can order the audience around ;) - but both times were beautiful, and the hymn had me sniffling both times. unfortunately though, i have to say i feel the album doesn't do the live performance of field study justice. i've only listened to it a couple of times, so this opinion is subject to change, but i found that having the songs `produced' took a *lot* away from the raw power that was in her live performance. and i have rather bad concert ears, so usually for me it works the opposite way. but i found the background noises on the bird song track, and the traditional church organ sound of the hymn both detracted greatly from the experience. i wish i had a recording of the live show. - -damon, sad that he had to miss EFW - awkward timing for it this year - but determined to come next time... Well scary enough I'm back from Santa Cruz, Ectofest/West, Rocked! Loved it! Got to meet the Ecto herself, gave her a hug & a blessing so that her hand would heal faster. Although shortly after The Concert we almost got in a horrible accident, we were lucky those anti-lock-brakes didn't let us down... But I would have to say almost getting in a few accidents, our car window splitting down the middle not knowing what happened was worth it meeting everyone at Ectofest & getting all there signatures... I even received a free CD from Cyoakha Grace after the stories we told her what happened on our 9 hour trip.. :) being from Palm Springs & all... =-] But it was all great... it was crazy & I'm sure I won't forget it =-] Blessed Be! - ---------------------------------- http://www.paganpower.com LordTyr@paganpower.com Lord Tyr - ---------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 14:41:47 -0700 From: Phil Hudson Subject: House Concert Feedback and thanks I'd like to thank everyone who came to the house concert and played, or assisted or donated or just appreciated and applauded. Despite a long and hectic stage schedule, everyone who came got to play, much to the enjoyment of the audience. I'm really sorry I didn't have more time to socialize with folks who were there; next time we'll get another sound person to run the show. Thanks to all those who performed, especially Dan Marcos, who stepped in at the last minute to play a very nice set from his recent CD early in the day, and Michelle Garcia, from Cy's band, who entertained the audience for a good part of the afternoon with a solo performance. The others who played, Bill Mazur, Jeff Orr's Previously Lost Dogs, Pipa Pinon with Dreambeach, Cyoakha, and Wendy Rule all performed wonderful and entertaining songs and sets. (Ectos; check out Pipa! The exquisite combination of Pipa's lovely voice and Daniel Vee Lewis' gentle, intricately rolling bass passages will appeal to many on this list; www.dreambeach.net) Thanks to Cy (again) for introducing her friend to us. Cy's "Church of the Holy Trees" was very wonderfully appropriate, given the location. Wendy topped the night's events with a beautiful performance offstage around a blazing fire in one of the redwood groves, combining her songs with stories and legends. In retrospect, the all-day house concert was a pretty ambitious plan to begin with, which created problems and glitches here and there with scheduling ( apologies to any in the audience who had to leave before their favorite act appeared). I'd probably take a lesson from this one and shorten any future events, or at least post the stage schedule well in advance, so those who come to see specific acts will know when to arrive. I'd really like to get feedback from folks there on making this concept smoother next time; lots of folks graciously came and gave thanks, saying how much they enjoyed themselves, but I would also like to hear what didn't work for people there, what we can do to improve any future events, and really what just plain sucked! This would be very helpful in preparing and planning any similar events in the future, like Ectowest House Concert 2002 ( but not yet!). Please send me your personal perspectives on the day; what worked and what didn't, and any suggestions or ideas you might have for future events. Again, thanks to all for coming, and biggest thanks to Happy for doing her show, despite the obvious pain she was experiencing. Kudos again to Shelly and Michael, and to the unsinkable Cyoakha Grace for her support in promoting the event, and for staying over with her lost tribe on Saturday night and making us all laugh. Special thanks too, to Land of the Blind's stellar didge player, Krystov, who assisted a lot with sound and setup, and kept us all in hysterics with his mercurial deadpan outlook on the world. Now I'm going to sleep for a couple of weeks. I thought it was beautiful. I know it's not heavy on the poetic side (maybe it is, I didn't catch all the lyrics), but I think it has the potential to really strike a cord with the masses and media types. It surely did with me. With good production, it could be Happy's break-out song. I would miss not being able to see her at a 100 seat house, but I also would be happy for Happy to obtain more commercial success and allow her to reach a broader audience. And wouldn't it be a great emotional reward to stick-it-to Sampson Music and other past impatient doubters? It's like what Happy said during the show... 'you reach a certain age and then realize you want what everyone else wants, a home, a family'.... and of course love. It's one of those base emotions everyone can relate to - and although I can't remember all the words... something about everywhere you go, I'll go... I'm also a big Chris Isaak and Aimee Mann fan, so I ate this up. This was my first time seeing Happy live. From the first uttered words of 'Collective Heart' I thought to myself... wow...is that gorgeous sound (really) coming out of her mouth? :) I thought the keyboard playback of her sampled voice as background vocals worked very well too. Drums and guitar were also very tight. Thank you Happy for being a trooper and going through with the show given your injury. I can now say: She's so good, she can play a gig with one hand tied behind her back ;) Do come back soon! I'd pay for the new CD in advance just to get a pre-release (live bootleg?) copy of that love song in MP3. hint, hint... it might be a good PR play for the new CD, Happy :) Thanks also to the people for putting the EFW show together, it was a real treat. - -Brad- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 18:51:08 -0400 From: "Pamela P." Phil's Totally Truthless Rumor Mill On a more factual note, Shelly tells me that Happy was cutting some tape off of a case or a box and the knife slipped. I prefer my version; it has more Hollywood appeal. Let's hear a few more versions from Ectos with equally rabid imaginations.
