One person presented her with a copy of Dectopia to sign. She asked "What's this?". The individual said that it was the Dectopia tribute CD and explained a little bit about it to her. She told them that she had heard about this tribute CD and seemed intrigued. A little while later we presented Happy with her own personal copy of Dectopia. She told those of us there that she loved the cover and asked who did it. Meth, Woj and I all told her that it was you Fog who had done the cover art. She said "Fog, who's Fog?" We told her that you were one of the long time Ectophiles and then told her your real name. I believe that she was genuinely taken with the efforts put into the tribute CD. I just wanted to share Happy's comments with you and to thank you again for all of your wonderful work and dedication to the Ectopia and Dectopia projects. BTW, you were missed at the EFW event last night. I wish that circumstances would have allowed you to come out for it. I look forward to meeting you in person at a future Ecto gathering. Thanks Fog! Well, it's official.. according to Emil Adler, November Project is no more... Emil and Julie will undoubtedly continue on with some new project, after all, there are still ten other months in the year . Glad I got to see them at least once.. dave ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Jun 2001 22:54:10 +0100 From: "Adam K." Subject: "Magnolia" - finally. Yep, I finally got to see "Magnolia" on video. I am stunned. The next time Anderson wants to make a movie, someone should take him quietly to one side and kick the shit out of him. He couldn't write a decent line with a gun held to his head (and I, for one, am willing to put that to the test) and having a knicker-wetting desire to be Robert Altman will never be enough to elevate him any higher than the talentless, indulgent hack that he is. He certainly doesn't do Aimee any favours. After five minutes my girlfriend, who I'd hoped to introduce to her music through the film, gasped "My god --- this is terrible. Is this going to go on for the ENTIRE film?". Unfortunately, it seemed it did, as the soundtrack music ground on, regardless of what was going on onscreen, for the first 3/4 of the film. How does he get away with it? How could he be this bad and live? Okay, I'm glad I got that off my chest. Goodnight. adamk ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Jun 2001 18:22:43 -0400 From: "glenn mcdonald" Subject: Re: "Magnolia" - finally. _Magnolia_ is a strange and trying film, and there's nothing unreasonable about not liking it, but your reaction is juvenile, ignorant and embarrassing. Maybe when you've calmed down you'll retract it and try again. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Adam K." I *LOVE* this film. It's sweet, gripping, fascinating, funny, heartbreaking and extremely original. I suppose it's a "difficult" film, though I loved it the first time I saw it and wanted to see it again immediately. I have talked to others who said it was an acquired taste. I suppose I can sortof understand why people wouldn't like it (this is not "The Iron Giant" where someone would have to be a real asshole to not absolutely adore it) because it's long and seemingly disjointed. I think that there's *so much there* that it really deserves a second chance for anyone who didn't appreciate it on the first viewing. I realize I could be biased. I've been a big Paul Thomas Anderson fan since "Hard 8" and of course loved "Boogie Nights" too, but even I was surprised by the depth and range and sensitivity of "Magnolia." Each to their own, but I think that Paul Thomas Anderson is at the edge of genius, if not there already. I eagerly await whatever he chooses to do next. IMHO, "Magnolia" was one of the best films in an amazing year full of best films. Reviews, good and bad, can be read at: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/movie-1093531/ Those who don't like it will be gratified to see that their opinion is shared, but people who do like it will see that the majority of reviewers actually liked it too. Re: magnolia Re-reading my post, I think it came off as snootier than I intended. I especially don't want Adam or anyone else to think I think he's an "asshole" for not liking Magnolia. That line shouldn't have been stuck into the middle of a sentence about Magnolia. It was meant strictly for The Iron Giant, another of my favorite films from that same year. I really can understand why someone wouldn't like Magnolia, and it honestly doesn't bother me. On the other hand, I wouldn't be able to begin to understand someone not liking The Iron Giant. That's like... that's like...ack! That would be like someone not liking Toy Story II!! Impossible! :-) V Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo!
