I'm willing and available to meet up with other ectos for cruising and site seeing on Saturday. My daughter & granddaughter arrive Saturday afternoon for the Event, so I must be available to meet them at the Lodge when they signal. (Yes, a 3-generation Happy family!) I still have a rather worn Happy Rhodes bat/dove t-shirt from years gone by that I will wear again. See y'all, Jerene (female; not Jerome) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 Jun 2001 04:34:44 -0400 From: Jeffrey Burka Subject: woohoo! we're off to catch a plane... Back in '92 or so, after a discussion on ecto about "Wrong Century" (in which Vickie chastised me for assuming that the character in the song was female because of the reference to long, black hair, and I immediately shot back with a, "no, *I* have long, black hair so I'm not likely to use that as a judgement), Vickie started referring to me as Jeffy-with-the-long-black-hair. Well, 9 years later, it's still long. As a result, I tend to be fairly easy to miss -- full black beard and a braid down most of my back. And I imagine I'll be wearing an ectophilic t-shirt (either the original blue ecto shirt, or maybe the KaTe TRS shirt) Marc and I are planning to drive to Monterey in the morning to poke around a bit before coming back to Santa Cruz for the show... jeff ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Jun 2001 16:55:16 -0600 (MDT) From: Neal Copperman Subject: helen chaya Some time ago, I had listed Helen Chaya's "Over The Underpass" in my "now playing" line. A few people expressed interest in her, and I never got around to saying anything. Mostly, I just wanted to give the album a chance to settle a bit before I made any comments. There's nothing particularly remarcable about the album, but I find myself really enjoying it. Helen's got a nice modern folk voice - in that slightly rough folk way of the Indigo Girls. The songs are well written, with subtle get-under-your-skin melodies that didn't really strike me on one or two listens, but had become quite familiar after several listens. Her web site mentions Beth Orton as a comparison point, and I typically did not see that except for the songs where Jami Seiber played cello. There, the arrangements had similar atmospherics to Beth's, but I'm not sure I'd ever have come up with that on my own. All in all, a very enjoyable album. I can't really put my finger on why I enjoy it, but enjoy it I do. http://www.folkdiva.com/helenchaya neal np: Pure - The Golden Palominos (I know why I like these albums!) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Jun 2001 16:31:30 -0700 From: Phil Hudson Subject: Dectopia CD Kudos to Mike 'Foghorn' Weis, who just cooked up 2 dozen copies of the Dectopia CD celebrating the 10th anniversary of Ecto, and shipped them to me for the EctoWest show. I haven't had a chance to listen to the CD trax yet, outside of a few finished cuts I heard before the actual pressing ( and I won't review it anyway, cos I'm on it!), but the cover art, by Fog and Cyoakha, is by itself, worthy of the humble asking price that Mike charges, (basically just covering his production costs). The front cover is a wonderful melange of Rhodes monsties from different albums and the HR website, sitting around a birthday cake, while HR, in her best dress, waits for Ra outside the window ( photo from the back cover of MWABT) The obverse has a great collage by Cy, entitled ' Happy up a Creek', which actually looks as if it belongs somewhere on the back of a real live HR CD, with the signature photo from Warpaint, a bunch of many worlds, an ocean or two and an O'manion eyeball, (one suspects) amongst other elements. The interior booklet art features a lovely drawing by Matt Downer, and a very funny sketch of Happy by Lyle ' Tenthvictim ' Howard to accompany his rendition of Rhodes Waltz, Lyle's sketch apparently drawing its inspiration from a particular work by Edvard Munch. The disc label itself? A birthday cake with 10 candles. Make a wish! ( I got my wish: Happy's playing in Santa Cruz this Saturday) Thanks Fog, we all wish you could have made it out for the show. Then again, you have heard much of it already. And a fine job of music was done by everyone! I was going to announce availability this Sunday, give EFW advance first dibs on it, as well as give me time to get ready for future orders. So for those interested in obtaining it, if you're going to EFW try there, if not (or they sell out), watch this space Sunday. I'm hoping to set up a web page and take payment via PayPal. You can also email me and I'll tell you where to snailmail a check for it. Again, thanks to everyone involved, and have a great FEST! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Jun 2001 18:30:05 -0600 (MDT) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Wendy Rule, take 2 Last night was Wendy's second (and final) Albuquerque concert, at the Blue Dragon coffeeshop (just down the street from my house). The Blue Dragon is a great supporter of local music, but I'm always hesitant to suggest it to travelling musicians. They play for tips, and the room typically isn't that attentive. The place was fairly sparsely attended, though Jeff and I each had some people from work there (and a few holdovers from the house concert), plus a handful of people who heard about it from a local pagan mailing list. (I was unaware of this, as I had sent info to the list owner and he never responded.) Anyway, I feel a little sad saying this, but I think Wendy's show there was better than the house concert. I thought you could see the day of travel starting to take it's toll on her by the end of her set on Sunday, but I didn't realize that was probably true throughout. Last night, her voice was stronger and more flexible, swooping between her high and low registers in a suitably Happy way. The environment wasn't as good for storytelling, and I thought her stories were a bit more awkward. Still, hearing the background on songs like Prometheus (recounting the tale, culminating with the part where Prometheseus is tied to a rock and a vulture comes to tear out his liver, only to have it regrow so the experience can be repeated again and again and again), and then adding her own perspective (I felt like that for a year), really made the song resonate more (Feed on me, Feed on me, Feed on me, but promise me I'll die ... for the last time.) It was a full moon, so we got a lovely ode with interpretive dance, performed mic-free. She played a slightly different set list, which was nice for us repeat fans. One notable highlight was the evenings lone cover. To celebrate the fact that she was in the northern hemisphere for summer, she played a breathtaking a capella version of Gershwin's Summertime. I'm really looking forward to all the music of the weekend now! neal np: Beliza Tropical: Brazil Classics 1 ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #158 **************************
