XFM were playing the whole thing, but I only came in at the last track, "Living in a Glass House" (hmm...is this a Gentle Giant reference?). It sounds interesting, the track I heard being a somewhat ramshackle collision between Pink Floyd and Tom Waits, with a New Orleans/Dixieland band playing along. As the next one is Sunday, I don't have too much time left. So, here's a somewhat delayed review of last months show, featuring Rani Arbo and daisy mayhem (http://www.raniarbo.com). Rani used to play fiddle and sing with a band called Salamander Crossing, and one of the members of Daisy Mayhem was also in SC. The band consisted of Rani, a string bass player, a guitarist and a percussionist. (Yes, we had them all in Jeff's house, as well as a record breaking 53 people too!) Every memeber of the band had a great voice, so we were treated to a variety of vocals, as well as some wonderful harmony singing. The styles of music were all over the place. None of them are styles that I really listen to much, but the blending of them was really captivating. We had bluegrass, Appalachian, old timey, country, swing, and even some jazz standards. All the musicians were solid on their instruments too, and showed a genuine joy in performing. In fact, after seeing them twice that weekend, I was amazed at how much fun they had performing, and how they seemed to view each song as fresh and new, even if some of them had been playing them for a decade. Highlights included Oh Death (which can be heard in the Coen brothers latest film) and a song featuring fiddlesticks, where the drummer percussively played fiddle strings while Rani played a dance tune. BTW, I have to mention the drummers kit, which was a homemade project consisting of a cardboard box with watercolor paper on top, several cans, cookie tins and their associated lids, a kick suitcase and a string of bottlecaps. Perfect for a house concert, and remarcably versatile anyway. The band is doing festivals all summer in the northeast, as well as popping up in Seattle and Oregon later in the year (and returning to NM). Their debut album is due out on Signature Sounds in July. Highly recommended. neal np: spin - David Stewart & Barbara Gaskin ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #151 **************************
