I believe they had two albums before that. I've heard them compared to St. Etienne. What do other people think of their music, and what would you compare it to? actually i never thought of that comparison, but it's a relatively fair one - though i am thinking ST. ETIENNE during their earlier period, not their later SOUND OF WATER more ambient period. their first album is the one that i like the most (self titled). the shop keeper who sold it to me told me it reminded him of IVY who i dig, so i listened to it at the store and immediatley plunked down the $8 for it (used). still listen to it now and then. there is a definite sort of jangly british guitar sounds going on as well, though obviously they are not british. the guitar work is reminiscent of THE SUNDAYS or that sort of 80's british jangly guitar sound (SMITHS, HOUSEMARTINS, ECHO & the BMEN etc). not that they sound dated, but it has a sort of that catchy guitar hook that i always equate with that period. the vocals are pretty high in the mix, not nearly as ethereal sounding as THE SUNDAYS. they are much more straightforward, more like who the shop keeper compared them too, IVY or any number of the SARAH bands (HEAVENLY, FIELD MICE etc). not as pop as HEAVENLY, not as twee as FIELD MICE, but same sensibilities. good fun stuff. i never did get into their second album (IMMOBILE). it was a little more hard, a little more rock, a little more arhythmic percussions, a little more sound effects - it sounding like they were going for more of an edge in their sound, but for me they lost what i was interested in, and that was their hook and their sense of fun (i don't understand french, so for all i know, they could be singing about death and murder, but the guitar work and the songs structure sounds like fun, so i am going to call it fun). for me they started to take themselves a little too seriously with their second album, and got all moody. hence i lost almost all interest. it was almost like the first album was their childhood and they were out in the playground playing tag, while the second album was their adolescents and they got all moody with their hormones raging and they just sort of sulked and smoked a lot of cigarettes and hung out at friends garage playing music. that said i am sure there probably are a few songs that are decent, but nothing i can think of right now. i am kinda interested in what their third album is like. anyone have it (i know i asked it before, but no one seemed to have answered, so the answer if probably no)? i hear it is more trip hop sounding. i can see that as a natural progression in their sound, but frankly it is so trendy now, that i am wary of picking it up. irvin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 11:31:51 +0100 (BST) From: adamk@zoom.co.uk Subject: Sarah Harmer, Live in London Yes, I saw Sarah Harmer's first UK gig last night, at the Borderline, and she was...okay. I guess. She had a good audience, a crowd of obvious devotees (or Canadians)who knew all the words and who had decided to skip the opening act, an Aussie singer/songwriter called Lisa Fitzgibbon. A pity, 'cos she was pretty good, despite having to play to a crowd of only about a dozen people. Anyway, then came Sarah: Great voice, nice tunes, good accompaniement from a drummer (doubling up on electric guitar) and bassist (doubling up, to great effect, on cello). Everything presented very pleasantly, but with no drive or edge or sense of...well, much of anything, actually. A nice little chamber piece, each song chugging along until it ended. Sarah, while seeming a very personable sort, isn't the most charismatic of performers, singing -- for the most part ---- with her eyes closed. It all drifted by amiably, and about halfway through I began to feel really tired and disengaged. She says she's coming back again in the Autumn, but I'm not rushing to book my ticket quite yet.
