They're overpriced and the guy who builds them is a master of marketing with all the options and testimonials on his site, but if you stick to the low-priced models and skip the add-ons you can do ok. I have to admit the quality of construction is nicer than what most people could build on their own. If you're a do-it-yourselfer though, you can go to http://www.digikey.com and order a pair (or two) of Panasonic electret condenser microphone elements. The Core Sound sets use Panasonic WM-60AT elements, available at Digi-Key for about $3 each, but my favorites are Digi-Key part #P9963-ND, which are Panasonic model WM-56A103 elements (they have better mids and a natural bass rolloff which reduces the boominess without the need for a bass filter). Then buy a set of cheap headphones at a dollar store, cut off the headphones and solder the mic elements onto the ends of the stereo headphone cable. Find a creative way to attach some alligator clips to them and you've got a good set of mics for acoustic shows. If you plan to record loud shows, you might need to add a "battery box" power supply to increase the voltage to the mics, thereby increasing the headroom and reducing the distortion from overloading. You can buy a battery box from Core Sound too, or build your own using plans at http://www.minidisc.org/homemade_mics.html Good luck. The Borderline is a great little venue, intimate without being claustrophobic (and you can sit,if you want!) which makes this a high ecto priority gig. Meanwhile, at the end of May, Jill Sobule is putting in an appearance in London, playing with Lloyd Cole's new band, the Negatives, at the new Ocean venue in Hackney. As well as playing in his band, she is also doing a support gig. Okay, that's all. For now. Adam K. Buffalo Springfield box set!!! Hey y'all :-) I know fellow list member Alan Bershaw will be jazzed by this news (we've been discussing this for a few years now) but iffin ya head to http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/2001-05-11-buffalo-springfield.htm you can read about the long overdue (Neil Young, ya know) box set release from Buffalo Springfield, which is due for release on July 3rd!! (early lunch break for me on July 3rd!) I tried to post the full text of the article here but the formatting of the cut & paste was nightmarish. The article is also on the first page of the print edition of today's USA Today E section. I don't know about the rest of you folks here, but this is one release I have been waiting for many many many many moons...a couple hundred at least. It's going to be a 4 CD set, 3 of which are mostly unreleased material, with the 4th CD remastering the groups' first two albums in full. I love the Panasonic mics; there's a site which shows how to build a high-volume, extra-linear mic setup using these units. Email me, anyone who wants the URL (I'll have to dig it out). One Caveat to Dan's comment about headphone cord: I have had a very high failure rate from using cheap headphone cords; I recommend spending a few extra bucks and getting a long stereo-mini to -mini plug patch cable, cut it in the middle, and you have two decent quality cables instead of one dubious quality cable. What's $5 in hardware cost when you're saving $200 on the mics? >If you plan to record loud shows, you might need to add a "battery >box" power supply to increase the voltage to the mics, thereby >increasing the headroom and reducing the distortion from >overloading. You can buy a battery box from Core Sound too, or >build your own using plans at >http://www.minidisc.org/homemade_mics.html Also highly recommended, especially if you want the added-linearity mod. The battery will last years, if you wire the box so that there's no power to the mics when they're unplugged. - -- | Greg Dunn | You dream about her, can't you | | gregdunn@indy.net | see? The Springfield were so influential and yet a generation of younger people ( than me for sure) probably have only barely heard of them. Buffalo Springfield an ecto band ? Well "Expecting to Fly" by Neil Young fits the bill definitely !
