I can't say they're "brilliant" (they sometimes remind me of this horrible, local e-thereal outfit Solar Twins) but they've got a good live act. They played a few weeks ago for the kcrw cd release party for Sounds Eclectic. They're also opening for Spearhead in a few weeks. If you like them, you might like another LA band called The Januaries who are similar in style with more emphasis on rock rather than beats. And the url for the lau list is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/la-underground Lots of good shows next week coming in LA (Chicks on Speed, Evan Dando, Martha Wainwright, Maren Ord, Handsome Family, J Mascis, Donna de Lory, and the Coachella Festival). June 6! Neal, I think that some of these additional shows are evolving and happening fairly spontaneously as we speak. I will let Phil speak specifically to my next comment. I don't want to get anyone's hopes up unduly. I am not directly involved with any of these plans. Anyway, I believe that Phil is planning to have Wendy, Cyo, and Pipa play a set or two at the house concert and party at his place near Boulder Creek in the Santa Cruz mountains. This event is planned for Sunday (6/10) afternoon and will probably go well into the evening. I hope that I am not letting the cat too much out of the bag. I doubt that Phil will be able to respond directly to this message until Monday. I am responding at this point because I didn't want to leave your post unanswered for a few days. Your suggestion of posting events which are happening in and around the EFW is a good one. I am cc'ing Shelly on this message. Perhaps, in her copious free time, she can post this information on the EFW web site. I know that Shelly has a very good handle on the planning of the main Saturday EFW event. As stated, these other events are evolving and being scheduled due to the artists wanting to perform in and around the Bay Area during the EFW. It gives artists like Veda and Wendy the ability to schedule other shows and maximize their time while being in the area for the EFW (as a performer or attendee). I hope that all of these plans come together. I am hopeful that this information will cheer you. I decided to go looking for "I Megaphone": Imogen Heap. My Fischer port. CD player died after only 2 years of lying on the floor of my car thru Kansas summers and winters. So, I swallowed my pride and went to Best Buy. Got the player but no IH. I glanced around and noticed a CD: George Martin: "In My Life" Beatle songs with the unexpected: Robin Williams and Bobbie McFarin do a great "Come Together". Goldie Hawn does a nice slow "Hard Day's Night". Jim Carrey does a creditable "I Am The Walrus". It ends with Sean Connery doing a wonderful dramatic reading of "In My Life". Go Out and get it!! The next day I got "I Megaphone" and love it. I walked into a Border's to break down and get Poe: "Haunted" and left with it and Sheila Chandra's 2001 release[ "This Sentence Is True" (The Preceeding stament was false) ] Much of it is SC at her best and some is her evil twin. If you listen to cut 2 "Mein" on headphones the first time you hear it, 'be afraid, be very afraid'. The Poe CD is excellent. Very muti-layered production, I love it. Here at work I note that Austin City Limits is Shawn Colvin. We will record it but our usual playback time for it is filled with "Schiendler's List" shown tonight on PBS without interuption (no staion can put their identifing "bug" in the corner). bye, KrW "It's crackers to slip the rozzer the dropsy in snide!!" ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Apr 2001 17:13:21 -0700 From: Phil Hudson Subject: EctoWest House Concert, Sun Jun 10: Santa Cruz Hills Wendy Rule, Cyokha Grace, and friends, Pipa Pino and Dreambeach, Piper Maru plus others. The gig will start around 2pm and go on into the evening. It will be outside, weather permitting, around a large Feri Redwood grove, and I'm still locking down the rest of the logistics now, but the performers have all confirmed. I'm figuring we'll do some outdoor food and things. More info next week. All of you who intend to come, or who have questions please email me, ASAP, so I can get an idea of numbers and figure out a few other logistics like parking, foodage, volunteerage, etc. I'm planning on charging an admission which will go to the needy artists. How does $10 sound? Too much? too little? opinions gratefully received. The venue can handle at least 50 people outside, but we may need to rent a Porta-pottie if we get a larger turnout. As it is an all-day event there will also be the question of food; maybe a potluck would work, again all ideas welcome. Well, it's really sunny outside and I'm still in my office! Time to go Have a great weekend everyone! Neal, I hope this makes up for the Jun 6th! I've only had a chance to listen to the whole thing once, and Sheila's albums always take more time to get into, for me, to really listen to them and appreciate them takes multiple listens. So I like this already, even though it hasn't sunk in yet. And I think all fans should get it. The liner notes are *really* interesting, telling how she "inadvertently made an album" as she puts it, and talking about her working relationship with Steve Coe, and the project that is the fictitious Ganges Orchestra. The song Mien includes recordings she did at a stadium in--oh, I forget the country, and I don't have the liner notes in front of me. It's an interesting story though; she was invited to speak at a rally in an eastern European country, something that was invaded culturally as well as land-wise by Russia, and the rally was to promote the country's original language, and Sheila learned her speech in that language so she could talk to the people at the rally in their native language, and they were very surprised and grateful and excited. OK, I know I told that really badly, but hopefully someone with the liner notes can tell it correctly; or I'll do it when I get back home and have the album with me again. It is a very good album. Nice to have Sheila back. JoAnn responding to: Sheila Chandra's >2001 release[ "This Sentence Is True" (The Preceeding stament was false) >] Much of it is SC at her best and some is her evil twin.
