I am moving to LA and I noticed this in the LA times. The lineup is unbelievable. I am going to try to see if I can go. Not sure if it's an all day event or what. - -mjm ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 10:42:38 -0500 From: "Michael Mendelson" Subject: harry smith well, there look like there are an amazing number of good people performing in this thing, but for 50-70/ticket, I'm a little hesitant, since I presume each person gets to sing one 'folk' song and that's it. I would certainly be interested if it was cheaper, but I'm afraid I will be underwhelmed for that price. Does anyone have more info on what format this will take and/or what some of the songs which artists are performing? - -mjm ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 23:45:18 +0200 (CEST) From: Yngve Hauge Subject: I'm still here :) Hi, I've been very quiet for some time now, and I just wanted to give you guys a sign that I'm back up on my feet ... I've had a really bad time (again), and I hope I won't get there again. Won't get more into what it's been as it isn't very interesting for ecto in general, but if someone wonders then please ask and I'll tell. I got a few CDs/tapes for people here - they will be in the mail shortly ... you know who you are. The next email will certainly be more interesting - I'll finish that one in a moment :) - -- Yngve ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2001 00:10:49 +0200 (CEST) From: Yngve Hauge Subject: With all these artistic challenges around here ... Hi, I've up through the time collected CDs, and thereby bought some that was meant to be given away. For different reasons they've been hanging around at this place, so with all these artistic challenges around here these days I've decided to arrange one myself. The rules are: 1. Write one of the following using 3 songtitles with more than 1 word in them by a norwegian artist/band: a. A poem b. A short story c. A novel if you can do that in 3 weeks :) 2. An exception to the above is if you feel you can't or haven't got the talent or inspiration to do any of the above. You are allowed to tell me why you should be the one to get one of the prizes listed below using 5 songtitles with the 2 last ones being 1 word or more. 3. The challenge will last for 3 weeks from today. The prizes are with a special rule for the first prize: 1. prize Velvet Belly - Lucia (the norwegian release without the KaTe cover) This prize will be reserved for someone who hasn't heard heard anything by the band. If by any chance none of the winners qualify for this then the winner of the 2. prize (who'll then be decided as the firs prize - to make it more complicated) got the option to decide who'll get the album. 2. prize Velvet Belly - Easy (with the Jeff Buckley tribute)/A Briskeby promo 3. - 5. prize One Easy EP each. This might change if more stuff turn up during cleaning :) The jury will consist of besides myself: Tracy Benbrook Elin Sjoelie So have fun and many creative moments. - -- Yngve ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2001 00:35:53 +0200 (CEST) From: Yngve Hauge Subject: Change to the prizes (already) The first prize has changed: I just did find an extra copy of Cane's album Unable hanging around. Cane only did release this one album before Warner Norway did screw up. It is a very very good effort. Meaning : Velvet Belly's Lucia will be given to one of the winners who hasn't heard them before - if there are more than 1 then we will randomly select who'll get it.. Otherwise the rules are pretty much the same :) - -- Yngve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 16:59:24 -0700 From: Phil Hudson Subject: RE: Change to the prizes (already) This may be a repost, as my computer is having a Strange Interlude. It is stumbling attempt at an inter-linguistic pun, made more obscure by my UK background, my irrepressible urge to create bad wordplay, and the fact that UK people spell certain words differently. The Brits amongst us might get the alleged joke a little faster as a result. I won't put the translations down, in order to encourage the curious to visit the Northside site (noside.com), and look up the titles yourselves from the "Whirled" album by Vasen. BTW: Check out a few Vasen or Hedningarna clips while you're there. (And no, I do not get paid by Hedningarna for constantly endorsing their music! It is a labor of love). To make this more of an artistic challenge than a challenge for the Norwegian-artist-knowledge-challenged, would you mind listing a few Norwegian artists/bands? It'll give me a chance to peruse the music while I'm looking for song titles to fit in my novel... er, poem. :) - -K On Wed, 18 Apr 2001, Yngve Hauge wrote: > Hi, > > I've up through the time collected CDs, and thereby bought some > that was meant to be given away. Have't gotten around to mentioning anything about the Mila Drumke show woj and I attended here in CT on Saturday night. It was a very ... odd evening. The show was a benefit for WPKN at the Acoustic Cafe in Bridgeport. Also on the bill were Laurie Geltman, Peter Spink, and a local band I had never heard of before called X-IT. Mila was on third, and X-IT were the headliners. As the evening went on it became increasingly apparent that we were the only people in the room not there expressly to see the local band. None of the Cafe regulars were present, and I didn't even recognize anyone from WPKN (which seemed weird to me, since it was, after all, to benefit the station). The place was packed, but with loud, completely disrespectful local high school students and their parents (and in one case --that of the most obnoxious table, no less -- grandparents). The sound was also pretty horrendous too, as Tony (a ubiquitous figure at the Cafe who was also running sound that evening) either wasn't paying attention or just didn't care, I couldn't tell which. When Laurie Geltman took the stage, halfway through her first song woj turned to me and commented, "Ladies and gentlemen, presenting Laurie Geltman and her friend Treble!" No kidding. Yowch. But nobody else was paying attention, so I think we were the only ones who noticed. I have a recollection of seeing Laurie Geltman perform before, but I must be hallucinating it because she said it was her first Connecticut show. Unless she was at Falcon Ridge or something, I can't recall. Anyway, she was all right, but nothing too memorable. Her music is your basic Boston singer/songwriter stuff. I got the sense she wasn't giving her all, though, since she could tell nobody was listening. I'd give her another chance if presented with the opportunity. Peter Spink was next. I know I've seen him before, but again I can't place where. I think it must have been one of those WFUV Required Listening shows at The Bottom Line. woj was pretty horrified by him, but I didn't think he was that bad. He does the earnest singer/songwriter thing, with not-very-interesting music and pretty pedestrian lyrics. He wasn't offensively bad, though, like others who do the same sort of thing. Next came Mila. By this time Tony had sort of figured out the sound, and a table opened up in front, so woj and I snagged it and tried to tune out the idiots in the back as much as possible. Mila was accompanied by the always stunning Lyris Hung on violin, and they did a very nice, solid set, including "All Things Told", "Someone", "Motorboat", "Time That We Spent", and in closing, a kickass cover of a Nanci Griffith song that I am completely blanking on the title of. (They did it at the house concert here too, maybe someone who was here can help me out?) It seemed that as the set went on, the chatter behind us got a bit quieter -- I think she at least won over some people to pay attention to her, though she mentioned afterwards that no one had signed the mailing list, and I don't think she sold any CDs. The full Mila Drumke Band will be at Arlene Grocery on April 27 at 9 pm, and she promised some new songs. Also, she'll be back at the Cafe to do a double bill with Rose Polenzani on June 16 (right after we get back from CA, yay!). That should be a great night. The normal Cafe crowd will be there, and it'll be more like it usually is: full of people who care about the music and show respect for the performers onstage. Hopefully there will be a bunch of ectophiles there too. Oh, and X-IT? They showed promise when they were setting up, as the stage was set with some bongos and the boys (for boys they all were) had acoustic guitars. Imagine our surprise when they turned out to be ... a Top-40 cover band!!! woj described them as "N'Sync with instruments", and that pretty much sums it up. We chatted with Mila and Lyris for a little while in the back, then took off. I could handle the covers of songs that are currently on the radio that I've never heard, but when they started into Chumbawamba's "Tubthumping" that was enough for me. (Lyris seemed to be getting a big kick out of it, though. Hmmm. ;) ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 23:14:25 -0400 From: meredith Subject: I remembered... ... the Nanci Griffith song that Mila Drumke is doing is "Nobody's Angel".
