I got my copy of "Painting of a Painting" on Friday, and it's already gone through several listens, and completely blows me away. I think that I can confidently say that it's going to be towards the top of my top 10 albums of the year list. It's not a departure really from the sound of "Smashing the Serene," but the lyrics seem to be a bit stronger and it's just more coherent. Otherwise, much the same. I also got Terami Hirsch's "All Girl Band" in the same order, which I quite enjoy. Parts of it strike me as just *too* derivative of Tori Amos in the vocal tricks - it's definitely an album that could never have been made without Tori influence - but it stands on its own quite well, and is a decent album. I wouldn't call this a *great* album, but I'm definitely looking forward to see what she does in the future. ian. n. p. dagda: hibernia. - -- ian clysdale $ ... if columbus discovered america, did attila ian@redmaplegrove.org $ the hun discover europe? ... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Apr 2001 17:03:23 -0600 (MDT) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Suzanne Vega dates!! "Ride the Dragon_, Plato's Halo ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Apr 2001 20:21:06 -0400 From: meredith Subject: 3 song circus etc. Hi, This weekend was another one of those three-shows-in-three-nights deals. Friday night the New Haven Folk Alliance hosted a Phil Ochs Song Night. Phil's sister Sonny has been getting folk musicians together to go around the country and perform their versions of her late brother's songs for the past several years, in shows that are meant to benefit the host organizations. This one held special poignancy, as today is the 25th anniversary of Ochs' suicide. The artists participating in this one were Kim & Reggie Harris, Magpie, Pat Humphries, Greg Greenway, Hugh Blumenfeld, and SONiA. I have to admit that I probably wouldn't have attended this if I weren't part of the group that put it on -- but quite a few other people felt differently, and we had our best turnout ever for a NHFA Monthly Concert. The performances were wonderful, in particular Kim & Reggie Harris, who delivered a haunting version of "Changes" that sounded stunningly beautiful in the great acoustics of our venue, the United Church On The Green in New Haven. But by far the highlight was SONiA, who garnered the only standing ovation of the evening and sold by far the most CDs (she completely sold out of what she'd brought with her). I swear, she was channeling Phil Ochs as she sang his songs. She sounded exactly like him, and sang with the intensity and enthusiasm conveyed by the man himself in the video that closed out the night, a televised performance of "I Ain't Marching Anymore" from the early 1970's. She won a few new fans, for sure. We're already trying to figure out how we can bring her back here to do her own show before the end of the year. Saturday night, woj and I headed up to Providence to catch the final night of the 3 Song Circus tour, featuring Erin McKeown, Jian Ghomeshi (of Moxy Fruvous fame) and Andy Stochansky, accompanied by Les Cooper on guitar. Despite the exceedingly lame turnout (I'd been expecting a packed house because it was Erin's hometown, but helloooo ... where was everybody?!), the show *rocked*. They each took turns doing their own songs, with everyone playing along on everyone else's tunes, switching off instruments at will. It was really amusing to watch the frequent strap-switches, as every time Erin finished with the one bass guitar, whichever guy picked it up next had to either put his own (much longer) strap on it, or just sling it over his one shoulder like a handbag. Jian's songs were the least interesting, but they were no less fun thanks to the accompaniment. He mentioned that he's going into the studio in May to do a solo album, which I'm sure will keep the Fruheads happy until Moxy decides to get together again. Erin's tunes really got a punch with band accompaniment. She played "La Petite Mort", "Blackbirds" (which KICKED), "The Little Cowboy", and "Judy Garland" (or whatever that song is called, I'm horrible with titles). When she wasn't playing guitar on her songs, she was playing bass (very well, I might add) and singing backup. Andy Stochansky was the surprise of the night: he positively blew me away. I picked up his latest album, _Radio Fusebox_ and while quite a bit more understated than the live performances, it's still pretty good. His singing voice is reminiscent of Ian McCandless and Thom Yorke, and I've always liked his drumming style, ever since the old days when he was touring with Ani DiFranco. The show ended with a completely amazing cover of "With Or Without You", peformed on all fours. Or, more accurately: Erin was lying flat on her back, singing up into a boom mic bent down as low as it would go (and sounding frighteningly like Bono); Les was sitting on the floor; and Jian and Andy were on their knees (since Andy was attempting to play drums at the time this was some feat). By halfway through the song, the audience was on their knees, too. I can't really explain why this happened -- it was one of those "you had to be there" things -- but it was hilarious. I hope the three of them get together to do this 3 Song Circus thing again sometime, with more time to publicize the shows and get people out there to see them. It's always a joy to see a bunch of brilliant musicians jamming together onstage. Finally, to close out the weekend woj and I skipped down to Fairfield to see Altan in a middle-school auditorium. It was a very good show -- two sets of rollicking Irish music by one of the best bands in the business. There's not much more to say, save that it was every bit as good as I've come to expect from them. Whee! P.S. $35 to see Suzanne Vega?!? Heh, I can relate. It was one of those four-shows-in-three-nights weekends for me. We had Eleni Kelakos here for a house concert on Friday. It was the first show we did at Jeff's house, though there were only 18 of us, so we could easily have fit into mine. It feels a bit sad to do shows in someone elses home. Even if the space is better. Anyway, Eleni is a singer/songwriter from LA. She's got a big, clear voice that people kept comparing to Joan Baez. I can see that a bit. I think a number of her songs have a strong Sally Fingerett feel (which is good in my book. I figure I'm probably in the minority on this one, but Sally is my favorite Bitchin' Babe.) Eleni writes largely personal, character based songs that seem to be about either herself or people she knows. And at least one song based on literature (The Shipping News by E. Annie Proulx). Her songs are pretty straightforward folk, but catchy, personal and well-crafted. And she has a really big voice and warm personality. Afterwards we caught a late night set by local favorite Anna Wolfe and the Hounds of Carlisle. The next day we drove out to Grants, after stopping for a tour of Acoma (the oldest continually inhabited city in the country). There's a new coffeehouse out there, and we've been able to book second shows for a lot of our house concerts there. This was the first one that's actually happened though, and it was a lot of fun to set it up and finally see it. Grants is a small town in the middle of nowhere (75 miles west of Albuquerque), so we were curious who would show up. There was a decent audience, I think 31 people. The amusing thing was they tended towards the older set (like 50+). Didn't seem to matter, as they thoroughly enjoyed the show and bought lots of discs. The next day, Eleni took the train back to LA, and I took a nap in preparation for seeing Fugazi that evening. Ok, ecto-content there is pretty much nil, but I've been trying to see Fugazi for years. They would sell out in DC in an hour, and tix were only available at the venue on a Wednesday morning. This show sold out too, but, amazingly enough, Ticketmaster had tickets. I think they worked out some sort of deal, cause the $6 tix only sold for $7.50 through them. Not that I succumbed. I went to the door, and despite being sold out, was squeeze in at the last minute. I was curious who would see a Fugazi show here, and it turned out to be mostly people in early 20's, though there were a handful of older people, and younger too. Still, the band and I were probably the oldest people there. And they are, as I expected, a pretty compelling live band. I was ecstatic to finallyl hear Waiting Room live, as it's probably one of the best hardcore songs I know, and I found the instrumental tracks to be surprisingly compelling. (I suspect I was the only person who left the Fugazi show and went home to do their taxes!) Well, despite the additional moderately interesting shows tonight (The BellRays) and tomorrow (GbV), I may not see another show til Over The Rhine on Wednesday. >The artists participating in this one were Kim & Reggie Harris, Magpie, Pat >Humphries, Greg Greenway, Hugh Blumenfeld, and SONiA. Put A Medal on the Man has been a highlight of her and disappear fears sets since they started playing, probably close to a decade ago. While I love Sonia's version, I still miss Cindy's stellar harmonies. (Hey, disappear fear was also on the Birchmere schedule, and since Cindy lives there, those shows usually include her. So anyone interested in catching what they used to be like, that's the show to see.) >Andy Stochansky was the surprise of the night: he positively blew me away. >I picked up his latest album, _Radio Fusebox_ and while quite a bit more >understated than the live performances, it's still pretty good. So Andy does all the vocals on this one? He had a bunch of excellent guest vocalists on his first album. >P.S. $35 to see Suzanne Vega?!? Good lord!!! I'd definitely pay $35 to see Suzanne Vega at the Birchmere. It's one of the best clubs in the country, and they occasionally get people who are really too big to play there, but will anyway. The place only holds 600 people, and has an itimate feel no matter where you are. That's why she's doing 3 nights. I'm sure she would typically play in a 2000 or more seat auditorium. Plus, those tickets probably would be pushing $30 anyway. I'd rather pay more to see someone in a smaller place. neal np: Brief Strop - Sheila Nicholls ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Apr 2001 22:04:29 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: 3 song circus etc. Hi! On another subject entirely, my friend, a strange combo of shaman/doctor/inventor/healer and musician has finally finished his invention of three years ago. (He is a chiroprator, a great healing person & a musician!)It took that long (especially if you ain't rich) with all the lawyers, trademark, testing, packaging, graphics, designers, FDA etc...(for all of you that think, like I did, that you invent something cool and then you market it, ha ha, I have learned by watching his frustration!). Anyway, it is done and people can order them now. If you have ever been to the chiro or physical therapist and they have used e-stim on you, you know what this is. Electrical impulses thru pads bring blood supply to an injured area and ease pain also. Anyway, I really want to tell folks about his invention, I know this is not the forum but hey, all of us geeks that sit at a computer for hours may have what I have, Carpel Tunnel and computer shoulders and telephone neck. This invention of his takes all those sound waves from all the other machines and puts it all on a cd, WHICH MEANS, you can treat yourself at home, while you are at work, even right while you are on the computer... cause anyone with a computer with a cd player in it, or anyone with a cd walkman player can use it. I recently went to sleep at night with it put on "repeat" and the pads on my sore low back. It works, it's amazing. The machines they use at their offices cost thousands of dollars (and thus they charge your insurance $60 a treatment) you can also rent them for like $300 a month. He is selling it soon in stores for under $200. (All the time he has been working on it I was afraid the medical device people would put a contract out to kill him, this will put them, if not out of business, at least they will not like him very much). Doctors won't love him either, since the patient can afford to buy their own, and treat themselves at home or work, why would they go to the doctors for treatment? I know I never like to go to the doctor's. Of course, he has morgaged his house to finish it, he has no big company backing him, he wouldn't sell out to investors with money (cause they said they would raise the price first of all) and he simply has no money left (after three years!- I thought my album cost a lot!)for ads or marketing etc... so what the hell, I thought I'd tell you all and see if anyone wants one. He is selling them now only to "friends" & patients for $149 to pay off the graphic artist, the cd presser, the friend who loaned him the money for the boxes they come in etc... If you think I'm an ass for using a music list to mention a computer problem, you can tell me to bite off. I really just want to help him, I have used it and want to share it with other people that are on their computers for hours. It is so easy, you put the cd in, put the pads on the spot (surround the pain- basically) and turn it up. That's it, sound waves curing pain. So it is music-related in a way. ha ha. (he is afraid people will put music cds in it and "feel" the Stones or something, despite the warnings, well, if they want to, let 'em. I myself will have to try Happy on my wrists soon. tee hee) OK, that's my pitch for him. I wouldn't do this to you all if I didn't know him well, didn't believe in it, hadn't tryed it, or didn't think someone on this list could use it. I have not even told him I am doing this. Just email me off list if you want one and then I will have him call you or email you about shipping one to you (and tell you more about it). It is not even on line yet in any way, he is afraid a big company will steal the idea from him and sell them for lots more money, & with a patent pending it takes years to catch or sue the "big boys"...(and they know it, who can outlast them and their court costs?)
