I saw Kim at Folk Alliance and was pretty pleased with what I saw. I've been listening to her album Humminah a lot lately, and like it even better than the show. It's got a lot of different flavors to it, and my comparisons change from song to song. But I think the strongest comparison is early Jane Siberry, circa the self-titled folk album (with a touch of Bound by the Beauty too). I also hear a bit of old Suzanne Vega, and even Voice of the Beehive (circa Let It Bee). The songs are fun, catchy and somewhat whimsical. Pretty interesting stuff. I second this. It's a great album and I would say that Jeff's description is right on. I've also discovered "Cold Play" who I would say are in the same vein as Muse, but maybe a little softer at times. If you like Muse, you'll probably like Cold Play as well. Check out "Rake it In", "Getting Scared", and "Useless"). I should be getting Pet's self-titled album in the mail pretty soon, as well as My Scarlet Life's "Buzzbomb". I love Pet! Fisher's "True North" (excellent, check out the > songs "The Life", "Breakable" and "Miseryland") I was rather disappointed with _True North_ -- I find that the songs which earlier appeared on her indie release _One_ were a lot better. Sure, there were some oddities to the production/arrangement on _One_, but I still tend to like it better. On the other hand, _One_ didn't have "Miseryland" which is an awfully good reason to get _True North_ anyway. > Diamanda Gal`s' "Malediction > and Prayer" (this woman's voice is frightening, but for some reason I like > her music...), and Imogen Heap's "I, Megaphone" (love it! Check out "Rake it > In" Actually, listen to Imogen on "Rake It In" -- she does some horrendous shrieking, a la Diamanda, in the midst of it. Though the version of the song on the album is nothing compared to the way she screams when she plays the song live. It's fairly uncomfortable to be an audience member when she does that. jeff n.p. _Images_, Bel Canto ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2001 14:01:54 -0500 From: "Michael Mendelson" Subject: ma zeh? At the time, I looked for, but did not find any of her albums. Well, you can now download a decently encoded version of it from http://www.playj.com/sportsnetwork/static/Artist_5145.html The track is called "sam b'even." But if you want to hear a truly weird KaTe oddity -- "Army Dreamers" in Hebrew, it's worth checking out... <<<<< I find this truly interesting. I listened to the track because the title did not make sense to me. Kate uses so many idioms, it is very interesting to hear how this would translate. Indeed, the name of the track is actually 'Shem B'Even' which translates as 'A Name on a Stone' -- i.e. a gravestone. Thus, the main character, the 'army dreamer' is reduced to a name on a gravestone. Next time I'm in Izzy, I will look for this one (yeah, I know I can buy it online but that wouldn't be nearly as fun!). Considering Israel's defense-centric society it surprises me not in the least that someone would choose to cover this song. Almost every Israeli album I own has something to do with someone losing loved ones in the military (or in a terrorist act). Truly depressing how much defending the country has seeped into every pore of the national psyche. - -mjm ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Apr 2001 14:11:05 -0700 From: "Suzanna Otting" Subject: The Dark Crystal Hey ectophiles, This is a question for the ecto collective mind.
