Hello,Black Dove -- welcome to a wonderful place. It sounds as if you'll fit right in. The beauty of this list is the range of music it covers, and the eclectic and open- minded nature of the people involved. I've joined in with other lists, but this is, by far, the most diverse and tolerant. On other lists, I've found, all you have to do is voice a contrary opinion or be remotely critical, and your PC will melt from the flames. Here, there's far more respect and a greater willingness to debate (i.e, Jeff's measured and intelligent response to my dismissal of "Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking" --- A classic and heart-warming ecto response!) The other thing I lurrrrve about this place (oh, god, guys, I'm getting all misty) is what you can learn. In my time here, I've discovered the joys and wonders of Dar Williams, Velvet Belly, Melissa Ferrick, Sandy Dillon and -- most importantly for me --- Veda Hill. Sure, I haven't taken to all the ecto faves, but that's all part of the great hit- and-miss experiment of life. I'd like to point out, as a general note, that this is shaping up to be an excellent year for ecto. What with Kristen Hersh, Jonatha Brooke, Nick Cave and (ahem) Matthew Jay releases already out, and with new releases from Ruby and Sparklehorse imminent (AND a new Veda Hille mentioned for the autumn) this could be a classic year for good music. On the other hand, with Bush pulling out of the Kyoto treaty, it may be all irrelevant. Okay, it's time for my medicine. I'll shut up now. Welcome, Black Dove. np - Matthew Jay/"Draw" (I can't help it -- it fills my head with sunshiiiiiiiiiine.) WOW!!! Just a quick note : I saw OTR just a couple hours ago at the Crocodile Cafe in Seattle WA. My first time seeing OTR live and I was very impressed. All the playing was great, the sound was awesome, drums and keys were really tasty, Karen's voice REALLY blew me away and . . . .her breath taking beauty was overwhelming! ;-) What a TREAT! I really wanted to stay and meet everyone ( especially Karen since I'm a big fan of exceptional talent and beauty ) but my freind I went with to the show and I have to work early tommorow so we left. A few years ago I was at a Micheal Bean show in Seattle and after the gig were were hanging around since Micheal had recently produced a few songs for my friend's band ( Big Pink ), and I noticed some really beautiful music being played over the PA. Another friend who was there also commented on how good it was. I asked one of the sound guys and he said it was a band called Over The Rhine. I was hooked and have been dying to hear them live ever since. For those that are not familiar Over The Rhine has some similarities in sound to The Sundays, Six Pence None The Richer, Natalie Merchant, The Beatles, Neil Young / CSNY, etc, etc . . .. IMHO of course! ;-) Their website is at : http://overtherhine.com/home.html If OTR is coming to a city near you soon ( Portand and San Fran HEADS UP! ;-) make sure you dont miss them!!!! Karens voice needs to be heard live to be believed!!!!!!!!!! I hope they come back to the Seattle area soon ( I know it will probably be a while though . . . ) OK, I'll calm down now and go to bed! I've had the Rio Volt for a few weeks now, and the Expanium for several months. The Volt displays name information, and the adition of an alpha-numeric display makes directory navigation almost pleasant. The display however is not really wide enough, so, short of guessing a name from the first 10 letters, you have to wait for it to start scrolling, at a glacial pace. The letters are big and easy to read, but I would perfer them smaller, so I could see more of them at a time. It does play WMA files and wav files as well, which is nice, if you are into that. I can't speak to the skip protection because I only use mine in the car and at home. I will say that I haven't seen it skip much in the car, which is more than I can say for the Expanium. The shuffle feature is good in the shipping firmware (Seeming less so in 1.12fr), but dosen't stay selected over power cycles, so I find myself plinking through four repeat modes(and those aren't all) to turn it on, on every restart. The firmware is upgradable, and fairly straightforward to update if you have a PC or a mac (though a pain to extract the file on linux). Recent firmware has added a resume feature (which I haven't quite figured out properly yet), several customization options, and some fairly minor bugfixes and enhancements. The expanium isn't a bad player either, but I can no longer recomend it. The process of skipping from directory to directory by holding down the fast-forward or reverse buttons is straight-forward, but you sacrifice the ability to move about in MP3 songs. It wasn't much of a loss if the operation on regular CDs is anything to go by, shuttling about in a song isn't smooth, and not really usable. The random feature on the expanium is OK but not remarkable, dosen't stay on over restarts, but I don't notice it as much because it is the first option on the play-mode list... untill I want to turn it off, and have to scroll through another eight modes I don't use. My big complaint though is that sometimes in the car, when it is finished with one MP3 and goes looking to read the next one, the vibration is enough that it can't. This only happens in random mode, but makes it almost useless for me, as random MP3s on road trips was what I really wanted the player for. The expanium runs its disks all the time, and uses power-saving tech from the CD player world, so it will play a normal CD for 12 hours, a MP3 disk for six or eight on bateries. The Volt on the other hand buffers MP3s and then stops the disk, giving it 10 or 12 hours of MP3 play, and only five or six on a normal CD. Neither of these is exactly stunning battery life. I'm going to try and see them. If the Velvet Janes concert is anything like their most recent CD, Live at the Velvet Lounge, then I bet their concerts must be excellent. For Ectophiles who haven't heard The Velvet Janes before, you can read about them at www.velvetjanes.com, and sample their songs. The Velvet Janes songs range from melancholy tunes about childhood, to more edgy pieces dealing with love and loss. On their Venus Calling CD, their debut CD, there's a rough and tumble song about ravaging the environment. "Purple," on Opus No. 3, is about one of the Janes' mothers, who was incorrectly diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 28, and who had her three children taken away from her. Here's an excerpt from "Shame on Me" from Venus Calling, to give a better idea of what the Janes sing about: "Shame on me for kissing you with my eyes closed so tight Shame on me for assuming that I was the only one in your life... Shame on me for believing that you were enough for me... Shame on me for holding you so tight." The Velvet Janes are the duo of Martine Locke and Rose Farrow from Australia. The Velvet Janes' music is catchy, complex, passionate and melodic. While you can hear the guitar strumming that accompanies many of their songs, the music itself has a sophistication that makes you want to hear the same song again right away. The Velvet Janes have three CDs out: Venus Calling, Opus No. 3 and Live at the Velvet Lounge. They're all terrific CDs. Venus Calling is a little more edgy than Opus No. 3. The Velvet Janes are well worth exploring for any Ectophile. - --Bill n.p. It must have been Nick Cave. His voice had kind of a low, semi-Jim Morrison sound. And I can't imagine Drake doing a folk tune. At least I think "Crow Jane" is folk. I was reading _Rolling Stone_ the other day (at the library, I'm too cheap to buy it. I was getting pointers on how to act when I'm elevated to Rock God.) and noticed Cave had a new album. Suddenly it dawned on me that the Nick person I had heard was probably Cave. Of course it could be a long lost Nick Adams record, but I would expect some cool fifties vibe to happen with Nick baby, and there was mostly angst and bluesy stuff going on. When I think of Nick Drake (though I have never heard him) I think of a depressed Donovan. Gotta go, Lyle nr: _Fermata_ (The?), Nicholas Baker; on the last chapter of my cousin's mystery novel.
