He contiunes to spin tlaes of love gone wrong, God and death. Here he is less cyncial than usual but not without bite. The McGarrigle sisters provide heavenly harmony vocals and the Bad Seeds are in fine form. On As I sat sadly by her side he sounds bizarrely like Bryan Ferry.(Compliment!)Another stand out is the title track. Big mistake. Big, big. Overloaded, now, with music, ranging from the interesting to the...well, let me put it this way: Finally caught up with the Delgado's "Great Eastern", which I kept meaning to pick up last year. Mightily impressive, although it's going to take a few listenings to get more familiar with. Wish I'd found it earlier -- it's epic and awe-inspiring along the lines of Flaming Lips' "Soft Bulletin" (and yes, like Grandaddy's "Sophtware Slump") Roger Waters' first solo, "Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking". I'm one of the few people who not only liked "The Final Cut" but REALLY liked it. This, on the first couple of listenings, is pretty bad -- tuneless and gimmicky, he groans or screams his way through it all. Whatever it is. Shawn Colvin's "a few small repairs" -- never a big fan, myself, having owned and sold "fat city", i came across this going cheap and thought I'd give it a go. Haven't got round to listening to it yet, i'm afraid. Tram's "Frequently Asked Questions" -- saw them open for Cousteau last week. Kind of dreamy, gloomy, laid back and subdued. One for Yo La Tengo fans, I guess. Or insomniacs. Cousteau's eponymous debut -- a bit overproduced, but good stuff, nonetheless. A nice mix of instruments (horns, strings, etc) and, like I said, a soulful, heartfelt, swooning style -- lounge music, but minus the cheese. Matthew Jay's "Draw". OH YES!!! I'm listening to this for the first time. Buy this album. Buy it. I have a promotional copy, so there's not much I can say about the details, other than it's out on Food Records, over here. Apparantly, he's released well-recieved EP's last year, and toured in support of Tracy Chapman. He's been compared to Elliot Smith and (of course) Nick Drake. I'm not qualified to agree or disagree on that, but it's all really beautiful, terribly sweet, a little naive (he's quoted as saying he hates irony) but lovely. Really lovely. Buy this album. (Now, whenever I've said that in the past, I find that I'm months behind the times and everyone already has this. And so....?) np -- Matthew Jay -- "draw" (did I say I liked this one?) nr --Linda Grant "When I Lived in Modern Times" Get your own zoom email - click here - http://www.zoom.co.uk/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Apr 2001 07:45:45 -0400 From: Laura Clifford Subject: Re: Jonatha Brooke/Tori Amos/Bjork's Dress/Elvis Costello I didn't see the infamous swan outfit in this light at all - rather than the dead fox carcasses older women used to sling around their necks, this was more of a costume - her accessorized egg, which she kept dropping on the red carpet, surely evoked life not death. It's probably the > Pink Floyd album that I return to the most. Perhaps it's not as few as you thought, Adam. It is by far the best Floyd album, and possibly the best concept album out there. It took me a long time to grok the entire thing and I still find new nuances in the lyrics and, to a lesser extent, the music. It's also the Floyd album I listen to most frequently. Try to take the time to get into _Pros and Cons_ -- it's a very different concept album, in that it about a man's emotions through a difficult relationship, as opposed to the highly politicized nature of _the Final Cut_. But the songs *do* make sense; they *do* fit together; the *do* tell a cohesive story. Think of it more like KaTe's _The Ninth Wave_ -- an album not so much about events, but the epiphany they trigger and the changes wrought in the protaganist as a result. Mmm. Now I wanna hear it. But it's at home. jeff n.p. _Wishville_, The Catherine Wheel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Apr 2001 13:55:47 EDT From: Dracovixen@aol.com Subject: Newbie Greetings All, I'm new to the list, and I had no clue something such as this existed!
