As gigs arrise or possibilities of gigs, please let me know dates immed. I am trying to book a double booking of Wendy and I, as everyone says we are a perfect witchy/tribal mix. Since I am pulling together an interesting mix of musicians for the Kumbawah or whatever it is called (a couple of folks from LAND OF THE BLIND, one from AZIGZA)and already up and running, I thought I should book the ensemble somewhere and then the Wendy deal came in so I am currently trying to book us both somewhere in the bay. I was worried that if I did a booking down south there that it might affect attendence at the main event. Phil, glad to hear you worked her in at your house concert (oh I hope it is at your house, folks, it is a fairie cottage in the Redwoods, suuuuch a cooool place to hear music) Troy, nice offer of a house concert, for her it would work, my set will be too big for a house, let me know if Wendy is going to do one with you, just give me dates so I don't set something up in SF at the same time. Neal, if Expresso Gardens needs another band, I would be interested, if that would help the "deal" with Wendy. I couldn't tell if that was on or not. Do you have a date so I don't double book anything. Do you think a gig in San Jose will affect the attendance at Santa Cruz? By the way, I am proud of how many of us are willing to help someone from another country, it really is cool and everytime I have traveled far the same thing has occured, like an underground network for music. beat the system, cyoakha grace PO Box 198 Mill Valley, CA 94941 lanblind@teleport.com http://landoftheblind.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 10:08:14 -0800 From: "Jack Sutton" Subject: Land Of The Blind/Kathleen Yearwood Two titles just released by Land Of The Blind and Kathleen Yearwood arrived in my mail box recently and below are some thoughts and observations on these delightful creations. Land Of The Blind "Ordinary Magic" Finally got Land of the Blind's latest work "Ordinary Magic" after a long wait. Well two things, it's worth the wait and it's a lot more than "Ordinary". When I started to write this, I asked myself how would you describe this music to someone? I realized I didn't have a clue. I hear other people's description and I guess the word tribal or trance connects in a muddied way. The subject matter is diverse, sometimes dark, sometimes light and uplifting. "Church Of The Holy Trees" a song written for Julia Butterfly is a spiritual chant celebrating the holiness and sacredness of those magnificent creatures that bless our existence. I'm so thankful for this song and it's reminder of the work so many dedicated people all over the world are doing to heighten our awareness of the sacredness of all species threatened or not on our planet. I'm not sure what "Eliza" is about but musically it tingles many of my soft spots, melody, vaguely Eastern undercurrent, and mystery. "Mary's Hands" and "A Little More (Monster)" are similar in how they tweak my musical hot buttons, but are totally different musically and in every other aspect. "Witches Of Kilkenny" find another weak spot in my armor, this time the Celtic hole. Now, I understand the chill I felt in my heart as I spied Kilkenny from a high tower over looking the town...witches, yes. The last cut "Journey's End" is about 10 minutes long with a Eastern Indian feel and something eerily familiar. I didn't get the connection until about 6 minutes into the song and recognized the "Doors" famous "The End" song. I was really impressed by that Doors song when I first heard it, but only now thanks to the Blind I see it in a very new and unusual light. Great job! For more information: www.landoftheblind.com www.hrmusic.com/discos/fafram61.html Kathleen Yearwood "Dog Logic" First of all, If you want to read a real review of this recording check out Glen McDonalds "War Against Silence" at . People familiar with Glen's reviews will appreciate the incredible depth and insight he puts into his work. His review of "Dog Logic" is a masterpiece and is required reading for all Kathleen Yearwood fans. I think he uncovered stuff about Kathleen that she even had to be surprised by. But, the most impressive thing to me was that Glen was able to actually read the "written" liner notes. I've tried with powerful magnifying glasses, but generally end up with a headache. However, after his comments on "Read My Diary", I confronted the liner notes again and yes...he's right. Some personal observations about the album: The work is a mixture of poems written by Steven Ruhl, Kyp Harness, Steven J.Bernstein, Kathleen Yearwood and others. Kathleen uses a wide range of vocal techniques to say the least. Several cuts, such as "Wake Me Up (When We Get There)" and "Somebodies Looking For Their Voice" reminded me of how beautiful Kathleen's voice can be, even as Glen noticed hints of Dar Williams popping up occasionally. It's surprisingly pop sounding. If she keeps that up, you may see her on MTV someday....just kidding, she has too much integrity to for that. She does some spoken word pieces accompanied by a variety of sounds , noises and dogs sometimes. Other songs are operatic sounding and may require a trip to the liner notes to decipher...I'm not there yet. If your familiar with Kathleens work, you'll understand this is not easy listening music, it takes listener participation and a little effort. I like it a lot and feel it's her best work to date. Espresso Gardens: Their musical bookings are generally far more in the mainstream than either LANBLIND/AZIGZA, or Wendy for that matter, leaning more towards Celtic, Bluegrass, Country, Classical ( they even have classical music Open Mic nights!), so I will know a little more about the scope of their musical tastes after I get feedback from the owner re; Wendy. I originally spoke with them about Happy playing there, as a possible second venue while she was in town. I emailed HR, but don't think she was particularly interested, so I got Wendy to send me a promo. Owner has been sick past few days. The place leans more toward smalleraccoustic sets than major electric, so depending on your current line-up and musical configuration, there may be a fit. The days that were most likely available were Wed, Thur and possibly Fri prior to the Kumbwa gig. The owner's name is Judy; I think she was very interested in the fact that HR had a guaranteed fanatical audience from the Ectos and friends, so that she could get a good house in for the night. Again, musically their bookings are traditionally a lot more conservative, so we'd have to provide the majority of heads, and possibly a little assurance here & there, but they have some staunch locals, some of whom will doubtless become converts/fanatics/musically enslaved beings, etc. I'll be trying to contact Judy again tomorrow; I can either inquire on your behalf, or you could contact her directly, just let me know. The Espresso Gardens is on South Bascom opposite the Valley Medical Center, (handy for those tiresome caffeine overdoses), and the phone number is 408 723 3737. regards Phil Neal, if Expresso Gardens needs another band, I would be interested, if that would help the "deal" with Wendy. Bjork will not act again, unfortunatly, so she has stated. I loved her swan dress! It was so her! She was absolutely stunning!! [It reminded me of all those little eider down birds in Iceland on the islands too...] What I do know is that Bjork's good friend Marjan Pejoski made it for her especially. Marjan is the very same designer of the dress Bjork wore to the Cannes Film Festival (any one see that one?) Bjork was so out of this world... and I wouldn't have expected any different. Her performance was the best part of the entire show and the only reason I watched. (was nice to see Russell Crowe win best actor too though.) I loved Wionna Ryder's introduction of her... I would have loved if she had won... but glad for her recognition... Ok, enough Bjork for me here and back to Happy: What happened to auntiesocial.com? Did I miss an anouncement? Where did it go? I must have opened it like 3 times lol.. only to find smoe.org. I hope everything is ok.. Smoe.org moved today, and I missed a configuration item on the web server...that was causing all of the domains we host to come up with the smoe.org front page. It is an audio collage of 40 clips from unidentified cover songs, and you are to try to figure out the song titles, the performers in the clip and the songs' original artists for as many of them as you can. A few have Ecto relevance, many don't. Some are probably easy, some may be very obscure. You may use any resources at your disposal, except I won't give hints. This is kind of a test run to help me decide whether these are enough fun to try to solve to put up on my public web site, so any feedback would be very welcome. Answers due by 8am, EDT, 5 April. It's possible there will be a prize for the winner. http://www.furia.com/audiotests/ glenn ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #91 *************************
