Anne Heaton opened. . . .and while she's not my favorite, I can see how people like her. . . . But really, I was just waiting for Erin and Band. I've seen Erin 6 or 7 times before. . . but I've never had the opportunity of seeing her with a full band. She was playing with her normal band (Dave Chalfant. . . and a drummer whose name I have forgotten), but from the first few chords, I could tell this show was gonna be rockin'. The show was one of the best that I've been. . . ever! I'd say it's definitely up there with the one or two Veda shows I've seen. They played the new Judy Garland song, which was absolutely amazing with a full band. AMAZING! I'm not making this stuff up, people. So for those of you who will be in a city where you can catch Erin soon, for god's sake, do it! I know she's going to be in Asbury Park, NJ tomorrow night, and you can bet that I will be there. It seems to be true that she will be opening for Ani soon. .. which will bring her great success and doom for the rest of us. . . So catch her before things get nasty. She was playing with her normal band (Dave Chalfant. . . >and a drummer whose name I have forgotten), Was it Dave Hower? I know he has played with her before as well. Meanwhile, I was seeing Mrs. Dave Chalfant and her sister Nerissa here in New Haven, doing their last show together before Katryna's maternity leave. The next time we will get a chance to see The Nields will be in full-band configuration at Falcon Ridge this summer (and Katryna intimated that she won't be getting back to any sort of regular performance schedule, either with Nerissa or the rest of the band until the fall). It was a hastily-set up show, with next to no publicity, it turned out, save the e-mail notice about it I had forwarded to the New Haven Folk Alliance's e-mail announcements list. As such, there was hardly anybody filling up the pews in the church where the concert was held. Opening were the organizers, the Yale folk group Tangled Up In Blue, which Nerissa founded while she was at Yale in the late 80's. TUIB consists of around 20 Yale College students, about evenly divided between men and women, who do arrangements of classic folksongs accompanied by guitars and the occasional fiddle and harmonica. They all end up doing solo vocal parts, but the arrangements would work just as well a cappella. They are very much a college singing group, with all the goofiness and earnest attempts at professionalism that entails -- I was having double flashbacks, between memories of my college days seeing similar groups at my school and also the fact that the concert was in a Catholic church. :} Katryna and Nerissa did a wonderful set. There wasn't as much between-song banter as usual, but what they did toss about was hilarious, as usual. (Best line: "I'm not a Catholic, but I occasionally play one in my songs." - - Nerissa) Overall the show seemed rather bittersweet: both sisters seemed a bit subdued, and Katryna's voice broke a bit at the very end as she introduced the very last song, an un-miked version of "Easy People" that was stunningly gorgeous in the incredible acoustics of the room. (They also stepped in front of the mikes for the classic "This Happens Again And Again", which Nerissa wrote while she was still in college.) At this point I don't think I need to say how much I love how their voices weave together, but last night, in those acoustics they sounded more beautiful than ever. One surprise inclusion in the set was "Georgia O", which I hadn't heard in a while. They played it in honor of tonight's Academy Awards, where a film featuring the song is nominated in the Best Short Film category. It's called _Seraglio_, and it was made by two friends-of-a-friend who became Nields fans and named the lead character in the film Georgia, after the song. They had copies of the film on sale at the merch table, so I picked it up and watched it when I got home. It's a wonderful little film (11 minutes), well written and shot and acted, and while I haven't seen any of the other nominees I'd say it certainly deserves an award. It makes perfect use of the song, too. I'm kind of bummed at how long it's going to be before I get to see my favorite band (and variations thereof) perform again, but on the other hand I'm really happy for Katryna and Dave and their pending new addition. That kid's going to have one hell of a cool family life. :) ======================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= ***!!!GO UCONN!!!*** ======================================= http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Mar 2001 15:23:22 -0800 From: "Troy J. Shadbolt" Subject: a plug for Meth's house concert! If any of you can, I'd suggest you get yourselves over to Meth & Woj's place for Anne Heaton and Teddy Goldstein next Sunday. While I had heard Anne before, Teddy (and Edie Carey, Sam Shaber and Andrew Kerr) were unknown to me when I saw them in San Francisco. Well, Sam is doing a house concert for me on May 11th now and I own every disk these performers have out. And it's all Meth's fault! Really, Teddy is one of the most energetic performers I've seen in a long time, and if he does backup on his harmonica, watch out! It should be a super show and I'm green with envy that it's way back there... So enough buttering y'all up; I want to promote an artist that I just adore. Her name is Deborah Pardes, and she's based out of San Francisco (but originally from NYC.) If you like a thinking woman that plays guitar, you'll really enjoy Deborah. You can check out her website http://www.mentlmusic.com and y'all on the East Coast will get a chance to catch her in April when she plays the Knitting Factory (NYC) as part of the DIVA celebration on 04/16 at 8PM or at the Bitter End (NYC) on 04/16 at 8PM. If you buy her CD- tell her you want the Troy make-out special (that's when she makes out with the CD after signing it!) I, like many other ecto-types, perfer music that makes me think, and right now, in the San Francisco area, that's Deborah. Check her out! Okay, enough pardesevangalism for one day! - -troy- now playing - Deborah Pardes "Strange Tattoo" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Mar 2001 14:49:30 -0800 From: Neile Graham Subject: Neile's December Acquisitions Hi, all-- Yes, I'm months and months behind, but I guess finally getting my December comments done means that I can finally make my total 2000 list. Sometime. And now March is drawing to a close. Help! - --Neile Carthy, Eliza angels & cigarettes This is one of my favourite albums of the year. And probably 2001 since it didn't come out in the U.S. until recently. This is a mix of great songwriting, Eliza's voice and vocal confidence truly coming into its own, and a great foray into pop for the first time from someone who has mostly done traditional folk. There is a little folk influence in itm but much less than you'd think with the exception of Eliza's fiddle playing. She knows pop and has the foksinger's trick of making some beautifully heartwrenching vocal moments. If you know Linda's Thompson's solo work, it sounds a lot like an updating of that in many ways. Or there are moments that sound a lot like Kirsty MacColl. But Eliza is her own woman, and this album is a knockout. Sam Brown ReBoot I think this is my official album to finally give up on Sam Brown making another _43 minutes_. I still adore that album, each of the 432 minutes, but her other stuff is mostly just way too pop for my tastes. This is fine and I still like her voice, but it's not my thing. Dorris Henderson and John Renbourn There You Go! This is from the late 60s and is knockout stuff. I'd long loved John Renbourn's _Faro Annie_ album, so much so that it was one of the first lps we burned onto cd (mostly by patching together songs from various compilations) and Dorris Henderson sang on that collection and I liked what she did. So when I heard that this had been re-released on cd I jumped at the chance to get it. It's a really wonderful collection of American folk/blues with deep and lovely vocals and Renbourn's beautiful guitar work. Highly recommended. Means, Pamela Cobblestones Means, Pamela pearls I'm not a big folk fan, but I downloaded and mp3 of one of Pamela Means' songs and really liked it, so I bought these. I need more time for them to grow on me and I think I'd like to see her live. I definitely like the way she sings and attacks her guitar a la Ani Difranco, but I'm not so sure about her songwriting--it's just not my kind of thing. Steeleye Span Bedlam Born I really liked _Horkstow Grange_, the disc they put out just before this one, but this has already gone on the "for sale" pile Underwater This is not a film Ditto the previous, except in place of _Horkstow Grange_ put _I Could Lose_, which we both really loved. I know Steeleye Span is uneven, but I liked all of _I Could Lose_ and _this is not a film_ leaves me cold. She'll be in the City on two occasions in late May: between May 16-19, then again May 27/28-30. She's looking for any floor to crash on, and will even stay in a different place each night if need be.
