Douglas Hofstadter's _Goedel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid_ has French and German translations of "Jabberwocky" alongside the English in the interlude "English French German Suite". The German translation there is somewhat different than the one quoted here; as I recall, it starts: Es brillig war, die schlichten Toven . . . ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 14:23:53 -0700 (MST) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Birthday wishes I'm surprised there haven't been a few public birthday thoughts for the man behind the hardware that keeps ecto and so many other exciting lists and projects alive. Happy birthday Jeff! Hope you have a good one. Thanks for all your hard work in keeping us well supplied in our ecto needs. Jeff Hanson and I were going to see Sarah Harmer tonight anyway, but it's now officially in honor of your birthday :) (The mayor's office isn't taking my calls anymore, so it'll have to be semi-official.) We had a fantastic house concert with Bonfire Madigan on Saturday. Our first sell-out. We had unbelievably good press. The Santa Fe Reporter's article on our show and series was 8 times the size of their blurb for Sarah Harmer! We had at least 7 people come down from Santa Fe too, which is a good hours drive. Seeing a cello, string bass and drum kit wailing away in my living room was a real treat. neal np: afternoon freeform - KUNM (have people heard the version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What a Wonderful World by the big Hawaiin guy that's on the Finding Forrester soundtrack? I've heard it twice now on KUNM, and it is so beautiful. I'm kind of doubtful that I'd like the albums from looking at them on amazon, but you never know. The versions of those songs are just heartbreaking.) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 13:38:08 -0800 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: 'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves And on a more musical line, I used to have an Ambrosia album where they quoted the poem in the middle of one of their songs. - --Neile n.p.
