I have typically had the same feelings (though I'm not sure the Smiths are drowning in cash either). I would hate to have the music linked to the image or product forever. That's my biggest complaint. When I hear the 1812 Overture, I still hear "my favorite candies not a bar pom pom" and see those stupid exploding boxes of pom-poms. On the other hand, it just provides another reason not to watch tv in my book. And it's easy enough not to do that the impact of artists I like being on commercials is almost non-existant to me. Now for the much-anticipated Mary Fahl news...as many of you know Mary rang in the musical new year by releasing her four song EP "Selections From Lenses of Contact" on January 16th. Things are finally percolating a bit at Mary's www.maryfahl.com website -- there you will find some pertinent links regarding where to buy her CD, how to contact her, etc.. To my knowledge Mary hasn't put on a solo show in the Northeast since September of 1999, but word arrives this week that she will be appearing at the Tin Angel in Philadelphia on Tuesday, April 24th.You may remember from when November Project played this venue that you can guarantee yourself preferred seating by reserving and having dinner at Serrano's Restaurant downstairs before either show. This club is not huge, so don't put off making your plans to attend, I'm sure that the tickets will go FAST! The timing of this concert couldn't be better as I'm scheduled to move north to Cape Cod during this time period, so I have already made tentative plans to be in the audience at the early show that night. :-) I saw OP three times during their time together, so I'm excited at the prospect of hearing Mary's voice in a live setting again. Here's some details: MARY FAHL @ THE TIN ANGEL 20 S. 2nd Street Philadelphia,Pa. "Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!" He took his vorpal sword in hand; Long time the manxome foe he sought - So rested he by the Tumtum tree, And stood awhile in thought. And, as in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes flame, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came! One, two! One, two! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back. "And hast thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my arms, my beamish boy! O frabjous day! Callooh, Callay!" He chortled in his joy. 'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borgoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. In response to Phil Hudson's question about O frabjous day. Here is the source. I have a friend who memorized this poem in high school. It gave him great satisfaction to repeat it. I don't think he can recite it now. (Yes, crablouse does come up on the spellchecker in response to frabjous.) This is an excellent poem to memorize. Think of the parties and bar sessions you could bring to a dead halt by spouting this. "Out damned spot" from MacBeth might work just as well. The Jabberwocky would come in handy at Star Trek conventions. When you run into Nimoy or Shatner, you can say, "Remember the time this alien had you trapped in his big mansion and he played the harpsichord and made you recite Jabberwocky? Remember?" Seems like Jabberwocky was recited (not in its entirety) at least twice on the original series. Bye, Lyle w.p. Moondog _Sax Pax for a Sax_ "Paris, mon petit, mais oui, sais Paris. Martin Gardner's "The Annotated Alice" has the text translated into German, as well as, I think, other languages. I occasionally deploy the first verse in German in just such a way, but have never been able to remember the rest of it. > The Jabberwocky would come in handy at Star Trek conventions. According to the resource at http://www76.pair.com/keithlim/jabberwocky/translations/ only two of the verses have been translated into Klingon, but the rest will inevitably follow someday. n.p. Are the German words made up, too? From memory: Es brillig war, und slithege Toven gegirtet und gimbelt ins Wabe. Mimliche war die Borogoven und die Mome-Rathen ausgraben. I probably botched some of it, but that should give you the idea. There's just enough real English in it for translation to work. (For that matter, there's even enough English in Finnegans Wake for people to translate it too -- I've seen translations of the Anna Livia Plurabelle section into other languages, which can make one's mind melt.) - -- |> ~The only thing that is not art is inattention~ --- Marcel Duchamp <| | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | Latest CD: Jerusaklyn http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #78 *************************
