Prompted by Paul, I went with my brother-in-law Tony to see them at Galapagos in Williamsburg last night. Mike C would have been revolted by the smokiness of the otherwise snappy venue. Overdriven Telecaster, heavy on the re-verb, stand up bass, and a spare drum kit, they fit his description when he compared them to Tom Waites doing surf music. They put me in mind of Naked City meets the Ventures. I was, as was Tony, more than a bit surprised that they managed to capture Paul's fancy. You learn something new every day. Well, thanks to Paul for steering me down that demented avenue. John ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2001 00:39:08 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: Bjork at the Oscars Hi! Suzanne posted: >As for her new album due out [in May I believe] it is called Domestika.. As you noted, it's now called _Vespertine_. Apparently everyone at her label wants to kill her, because they had the entire marketing campaign ready to go with the original title on it, and now they have to change everything at the absolute last minute. A friend of mine got to hear the album last weekend, because she has a friend who works at the label in NYC. She said it's incredible. I can't wait to hear it. I definitely want to try to catch a show on the upcoming tour, too. ======================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2001 00:36:19 -0500 From: meredith Subject: B5 (was Re: to the northwestern US ectophiles...) Hi! Kat responded: >JMS says that The Gathering and In the Beginning should be out on DVD >around July. If they put the series out on DVD, I will be out a _lot_ of >money... Oh yeah, so will we. Oy. I've had to physically be restrained from picking up all the soundtracks (did you know they released the soundtrack to EVERY SINGLE EPISODE, one CD per episode?). I'll only buy the episodes on DVD if they have extra goodies on them, though. Somehow I doubt JMS would let any get released *without* extra stuff, but you never know. >Have you heard the cast members' album? Actually, I have. A friend at work bought it, as well as Mira Furlan's CD, which is available from her web site. The cast album ("The Be Fives") is a surprisingly good blues record. Bill Mumy has some serious session musician friends, so the result is quite professional sounding, and everyone was clearly having a grand time making it. (The closing track, "It's Just A TV Show" is a hoot, particularly to anyone who has ever been to a media fan convention. :) Claudia Christian's got some vocal chops on her, though she completely wastes it on her own stuff (check out the sound samples at her web site, or find the few tracks that are on Napster... yack!!). Mira Furlan's disc is *very* interesting. It's rather experimental, and is a concept album (_Songs From Movies That Have Never Been Made_). At times she sounds like Julee Cruise, others she's doing a Liz Fraser thing with own-language utterances. She's got quite a vocal range. I would actually recommend this as ectophilic, even if you've never seen the show. It's kind of tough to get, though. ======================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2001 15:42:04 -0500 From: Michael Curry Subject: Merrie Amsterburg news >Date: Thu, 8 Mar 2001 15:29:44 -0500 >From: Jessica Smyser >Subject: Merrie Amsterburg > >Monday, March 12 >Merrie and Peter will play a duo show at les Zygomates in Boston. This is a free show and Les Zygomates has a nice dinner menu and bar as well.
