I'm really surprised this is less popular than it is. I just got my copy about 2 weeks ago, and have only listened to it twice, but I thought it was really great. I'm particularly surprised that Neile doesn't like it more, as the thing it most closely reminds me of is the Iva Bittova/other guy disc inferno. While I haven't listened to 16mm anywhere near as much as Inferno, I thought the way the songs layered and the vocals were in a similar vein. >Susan McKeown _Lowlands_ Hmmm, why don't I have this yet? >Hannah Fury, _Soul Poison ep_ and _The Thing That Feels_ jeff lent me these two discs several weeks ago, and I've really been getting into them. Craig has been after me for several weeks to pick up some Hannah Fury, but I hadn't done anything about it. A few months ago, I heard "Scars" online and then promptly forgot not only to order the disc, not only who sang it, but that it even existed, despite the fact that I thought it was unbelievably cool. I have no idea how this happened. In any event, thanks to CDBaby, the situation has been rectified and I'll have both discs soon enough... jeff ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Mar 2001 07:28:30 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: November in discland Hi! I don't listen to this much, because unfortunately to me it suffers from indie singer/songwriter syndrome: even though it's a live album, it still doesn't adequately capture the magic of actually seeing her perform live. I mention this because some folks out there might have the album and wonder whether it would be worth it to see her play when she comes to their town. The answer to that is a resounding Yes. She's working on a new album now, and hopefully she'll be able to find the magic this time around. From just seeing her name I was intrigued--as she is obviously of Greek heritage. The first set I saw of her though I had to spend most of my time readjusting my expectations. Her music is not really Greek influenced--but pretty traditional folk. Neal nailed it on the head when he said her songs were a lot like Sally Fingerett's-- beautiful, solid story-telling songs, but Eleni's voice is quite a bit stronger and is very passionate (her Greek roots do show there). The song "The Application" is particularly like Sally, though she's capable of doing some pretty intense stuff too (though much of this doesn't appear on her albums--maybe on the next one). She lives in L.A., but may be moving back to Boston soon. Anyway, it sounds like she'll be doing a house concert with us in Albuquerque in early April. Her two CDs "I will Fly" and "To the Bone" are available from CDBaby--you can find out more about her at www.elenikelakos.com. Check her out! Jeff Hanson n.p. I'm usually able to see Susan fairly regularly, so I've picked up all her discs at shows. So I'm not in the habit of ordering them. That's why I don't have the latest Nields either (audible gasp from Meredith, right?) > >>Heaton, Anne O'Meara Live with Frank Marotta, Jr. > > I mention this because some folks out there might have the album and wonder > whether it would be worth it to see her play when she comes to their town. > The answer to that is a resounding Yes. She said she'd have a new one out soon, and that everything on it would be better. I still love the one song I know off this recording. > (Have I mentioned that she'll be performing at our house on April 1 (no > fooling)? :) Our schedule (if I can even call it that) seems to have suddenly fallen into place for months. Here's what's happening in my home in Albuquerque: March 17: Bonfire Madigan early April: Eleni Kelakos early May: Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem early June: Wendy Rule July 24: willow I'm not sure how that happened. Went from nothing to full in about 3 weeks. Oh, and hopefully Veda will be in there somewhere in the April/May time frame. (I think we can always make room for Veda!) The "early" listings are actually set, but the artists will be here for several days and the date of the house concert is flexible depending on what else we can find for them to do in surrounding areas. neal np: Zen Arcade - Husker Du ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2001 10:13:20 -0700 (MST) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: November in discland On Fri, 2 Mar 2001, Jeffrey Burka wrote: > > >Hannah Fury, _Soul Poison ep_ and _The Thing That Feels_ > > > > jeff lent me these two discs several weeks ago, and I've really been > > getting into them. Just received two issues of the "MellowTraumatic Penny Dreadful" in the mail today. One of the nice things about shopping CDBaby is that they apparently feed back to the artist about album sales. I had received a nice little thank you card from Hannah shortly after buying her CDs there. And now this... It's a tongue-in-cheek little newsletter. The inside opens up as small posters - Issue one is a lyric sheet for The Thing That Feels, Issue two is based on the same's CD cover, with some lyrics and review quotes. Nice! The lead article of Issue Two may be of particular interest here - Thank &deity; for OCR scanners! The sound and the fury... New Hannah Fury recordings imminent Mellow Traumatic Recordings has announced that Hannah Fury is industriously at work recording new songs for inclusion on a pair of "singles" which are expected to be committed to compact disc within the half-year. Miss Fury's album, The Thing That Feels, was released by Mellow Traumatic in October of 2000 and has thus far inspired a most positive response from critics and listeners alike. The afore-mentioned singles will include tracks from the album and several previously unrecorded songs by Hannah Fury, as well as Fury's peculiar take on a number of modern classics. The first of these fanciful souvenirs will be manufactured in an elegant limited edition, each copy of which will be autographed and numbered by Hannah Fury's own hand, and will soon be available from the illustrious compact disc distributor CDBaby.com. and also from Mellow Traumatic Recordings' official information dissemination portal, mellowtraumatic.com. Mellow Traumatic has also announced that one of the songs from The Thing That Feels is to be featured on the upcoming Magnet New Music Sampler Volume Eighteen, a compact disc which will be issued in March to all those enlightened aesthetes who currently subscribe to Magnet magazine. In related news, several persons affiliated with the electronic-mailing assemblage of the World Wide Web's formidable "Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music" (www.smoe.org/ectoguide) have proclaimed The Thing That Feels to be one of the ten best albums of the year 2000. The Thing That Feels was sent to The Ectophiles' Guide, along with Hannah Fury's 1998 EP Soul Poison, at the urging of a listener in the beautiful and frozen kingdom of Sweden. The personages in charge at The Guide declared The Thing That Feels "utterly amazing" and promptly appropriated a page on their glorious site for Hannah Fury's music. Miss Fury has stated that she is proud to be placed on The Ectophiles' Guide, "amongst some of the most luminous and fiendishly talented creatures in the history of recorded music." In addition to the accolades received from The Ectophiles' Guide, The Thing That Feels has garnered positive notices in several publications which are rendered in the traditional medium of paper. In Outburn, a pamphlet of great renown amongst the more brooding and poetic members of our society, The Thing That Feels was given a rating of five (out of five). Furthermore, Hannah Fury was deemed "an artist with tremendous potential" by Amplifier magazine. Michael Toland of The Austin AmericanStatesman wrote: "...she pares her sound down to piano and voice, adding color by overdubbing ethereal cries and whispers, haunting the songs like a ghost." (An appropriate description for a collection of songs whose official release date was Halloween; and although this may have seemed intentional, a spokeswoman from Mellow Traumatic Recordings assures us that the ghoulish release date was purely coincidental. "Hannah does indeed have a bond with the dark side," says MellowTraumatic marketing director Kansas Mayhem, "but she's by no means defined by it.") Several investigative reporters have been dispatched by the Mellow Traumatic Penny Dreadful to procure further details about Miss Fury's forthcoming singles. They will share their findings with readers in the Spring issue. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Mar 2001 13:57:20 -0800 From: Troy J Shadbolt Subject: Deborah Pardes in NY I hope some of the NY accessible ectophiles will Deborah Pardes a listen when she's at the Knitting Factory on 04/16 and the Bitter End on 04/19. I actually have the Martin Page album "In the House of Stone and Light". It was released in 1994--he definitely has an interesting voice, but I found the title track to be the best on the album. It's not that the album is bad, just kind of boring. I briefly looked it up on Amazon.com just to verify the name of the album, and see that they have 4 used copies available through Amazon auctions.
