I highly recommend them, especially to anyone who's a fan of Ani DiFranco. Tegan and Sara are sisters from Calgary (which means yes, yet another Canadian Sara(h)!), and moreover, identical twins. They're truly a force to see, especially live... their stage banter is absolutely hilarious! Anyway they were an indie hit here in Canada before they finally signed their major label deal. There's a good webcast from a recent Toronto show at http://www.primeticket.net/shows/teganandsara/ Just saw a CD-release showcase for a country artist named Carolyn Dawn Johnson. I'm not sure I like her CD that much to be honest, but her live shows are great. Live, she seems sort of like what Jewel might have turned out like if she kept doing coffeehouse type shows instead of becoming the product of a major label machine. Also caught the last half of a preview of the new IMAX film "All Access". My god... anyone who is a live music fan and can see this movie in a proper IMAX theatre *must* see this movie. When a film like this completely fills your visual field and the sound is so good, you can't help feel like you're actually there at the concert, right in the front row (but without all the shoving and the smoke you get at concerts). The Sheryl Crow track is tremendous - so's Macy Gray's - and Santana's... really I didn't see a single dud. Amazing. Anyway, must get some sleep now! Steve ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Feb 2001 06:54:15 -0500 From: Philip David Morgan Subject: Boa - US album launch soon Good Morning, everybody in the Wired: Some time ago I mentioned the band Boa, which provided the song "Duvet" for the anime show _Serial Experiments Lain_. The following dispatch comes from Anime News Service (http://www.animenewsservice.com/) and AnimeDream (http://www.animedream.org/). It appears that American otaku and anyone on this list looking for a US release of the band's first album may not have much longer to wait... 2-20-01---- Boa CD Tour Coming According to Anime Dream: Pioneer, the North American distributor of Serial Experiments Lain, will be publishing bta's first American effort with the release of Twilight, an album compiling most of their released material to date. Some of bta's established fans may be put off by the decision to rely on old material for their domestic debut, but nonetheless, the album should serve as a great way to introduce new fans to the band, as well as offer fans that had been wary of the expense involved in importing a chance to pick up a comprehensive compilation of their previous material. The track list for Twilight, including the entirety of The Race of a Thousand Camels and selections from the Tall Snake EP, is as follows: Duvet Twilight Fool Rain Elephant Scoring Deeply One Day Welcome For Jasmine Anna Maria Duvet (acoustic version) Little Miss Drinking The noted absence of Two Steps, as well as the DJ Wasei mix of Duvet, is made up for by the inclusion of the previously unpublished Drinking, arguably one of their best songs and a nice treat for long time bta fans looking for something new - and not having been satisfied with the low quality sample that was posted on bta's official site. During their appearance at Otakon last August, early 2001 was estimated for the release of this first domestic album, but the original January 23rd release date has since been pushed back to March 27th, the album being set to retail for $17.97. To help promote Twilight, bta will be performing live at a number of local LA clubs between April 2nd and 9th. More details and dates should be available soon. Promotional tours are planned to accompany all subsequent releases as well, the next album, featuring all new material, tentatively scheduled for an October 2001 release. <...pasted news dispatch ends> (FYI: Pioneer not only released _Serial Experiments Lain_, but also co-produced the show with Triangle Staff and TV Tokyo.) So it looks like those of you on the West Coast will have something to look forward to. I just hope those of us on the East Coast will have your luck... Philip David ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Feb 2001 15:26:48 -0500 From: Ofer Inbar Subject: [Boston] Passim, Feb 28: Trina, Rachael, Liz Trina Hamlin, my favorite singer of all, will be a headliner at Club Passim for her first time, this next Wednesday, February 28th. She's co-billed with Rachael Sage, for whom this will be the first time at Club Passim in any capacity. Liz Nickrenz will be opening. If you're able to, please come to this show! Rachael Sage is well known and loved here on ecto, and has performed at ectofest, so I don't think I need to say much more about her. This is going to be her first "big" show in the Boston area, AFAIK, though, so if it's a success it'll be a big help in getting her to Boston more often. Trina Hamlin is an astounding, amazing, entrancing, live singer. I literally do fall into a trance almost every time I see her sing. She has tremendous power and emotion in her vocal performance, especially when in front of a live audience (for some reason, I find some of her magic is lacking in recordings she's made where there was no audience). She is also one of the best, most emotionally expressive harmonica players I've heard. She can do folk, blues, jazz, rock, and would probably make a great gospel singer too. Liz Nickrenz has a beautiful voice, and a lyrical style that reminded me of Rachael Sage the moment I first heard Liz sing. I brought her CD with me to the first ectofest, and got it played over the PA between sets near the end of the festival. A bunch of people sitting on the grass immediately got up and came over to find out what CD was playing, and a couple gave me money to have CDs sent to them, so I think Liz has good ecto potential. If you were at that ectofest, perhaps you remember her. If not, there are sound samples on her web site. Trina Hamlin: http://www.trinahamlin.com/ Rachael Sage: http://www.rachaelsage.com/ Liz Nickrenz: http://www.liznickrenz.com/ Club Passim: http://www.clubpassim.org/ The show is, once again, Wednesday February 28th, at Club Passim, 47 Palmer Street, in Harvard Square. It's just around the corner from the movie theatre that shows Rocky Horror, and just across from The Border Cafe, on the little cobblestone road. The show will start at 8pm, and cover is $7. You can call ahead to make a reservation, at 617-354-7074 - if you want to reserve a spot at a table, make sure to say that you're reserving for dinner. For those of you able to listen to WBRS's web-cast at http://www.nibblebox.com/public/radio/wbrs.shtml, if you tune in now, you can hear Liz Nickrenz (tape of her live performance here in 1999), and after that ends, in about 10 minutes, I'm going to put on a tape of Trina Hamlin's live performance from 1998, which should run until 4:30 or 5pm. -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@polyamory.org http://cos.polyamory.org/ -- WBRS (100.1 FM) -- info@wbrs.org http://www.wbrs.org/ "And I know just what the world needs: One more clumsy person with a sword" -- Liz Nickrenz, "Superheroine" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Feb 2001 23:45:06 -0700 From: Neal Copperman Subject: Folk Alliance Well, I'm slowly recovering from the whole Folk Alliance trip, and I'll be trickling out tidbits as I work them out. I have a list of all the people I saw, but I left it in Seattle and am waiting for it to be mailed to me. We must have easily seen around 24 hours of music over 4 days. A lot of it took place after 10:00 too, which made getting up for 9am workshops kind of tough. As far as I can tell, there was 100% ecto representation from New Mexico and Montana, and Carolyn was there from Chicago. Here's a few non-music related anecdotes: On the first day, I had challenged Jeff to see who could spot the artists we knew first. That evening we met up with Carolyn and were walking through the lobby, when a voice calls out our names. Turns out it was Mary Lydia Ryan, who we walked right past without even noticing. 0 for us, one for the artists. The next day I walked right past Laurianne Fiorentino (who had done a house concert with me) and she called me over. And I kept missing Joy Eden Harrison, day in and day out. When I finally was at the same place as Joy, I walked right by her, and didn't even notice her waving. Jeff had to point her out to me. Boy do I suck at that game! In fact, there were several times where Jeff told me I was standing next to someone interesting, and it would be the person we'd seen the night before. It was a real thrill for me to see Grace and Michael of Hand To Mouth again. It's been 9 years since I last saw them, just before they moved away from Baltimore. Not only did I see them play a couple of great sets of music, well, actually, I didn't see them play both sets. The lens on my glasses popped out at the start of their second set, and I was pretty much blind the whole time, despite the fact that they were standing about 10 feet away. It's a shame too, cause Grace is a dramatic live presence. She practically performs interpretive dance while singing. Afterwards, Michael used a guitarstring to tie my glasses together. It was such a good fix that a week later, I still haven't gotten them fixed. Musical highlights were definitely Gjallarhorn and Jorane. Gjallarhorn are from Finland, but they mix the traditional singing with interesting percussion and didgeridoo. They were a remarcable presence. The Jorane showcase was my biggest disappointment, but only cause of logistics. The info we had showed Jorane doing 4 showcases. We went looking for one early on, and couldn't find it anywhere. It turned out she only did 1 showcase, and the time was a half hour earlier than that listed in the schedule! I went 15 minutes early, and saw 15 minutes of her show. Jeff woke up from a nap and got there in time for the last song. It was more or less what I expected. Jorane is an amazing presence. She actually played guitar on a few numbers, and also sang a song in English. Her English was quite good too. I guess since all her songs are in French, and much of her web site, we assumed that she didn't speek English. She was wildly animated, both on stage and off. Once, between one of her songs, she just growled. We spoke with her and her manager afterwards, and they were amazed to have fans from the states. They were even more amazed to learn we were from New Mexico, as they had just finished a 3 week vacation there! Man, talk about missed opportunities! I'm sure we could have borrowed a cello from somewhere. We also had a nice chat with Veda's manager, who seemed willing to commit Veda to almost anything. So, how long would you say it would take to drive from LA to Albuquerque. Oh, about 12 hours. Sure, Veda would be happy to do that to play a house concert. Won't be a problem at all. Oh yeah, She likes that part of the country and loves to drive. This may well be true, as her booking agent has been in touch with her. She says, BTW, if you are interested, I book Erin McKeown too. We also saw Erin do a wonderful showcase. It was unrecognizably different then the few songs I saw her do at Susan McKeown's house concert in Connecticut. Ok, that's it for the first installment. Will post some other reviews, lists and comments as I get things together. I actually came back from Canada with 60 discs! (Ok, I did buy a half dozen.) neal np: I Could Read The Sky - Iarla O Lionaird ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #57 *************************
