(Earthquake Weather is a sequel to both of the earlier books, which really have little to do with each other. Actually, it's a weaker book because of it, but it sure is worth it to get there.) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 10:29:55 -0500 (EST) From: dmw Subject: Re: the whole napster thing (old topic, looking for new opinions) On Mon, 19 Feb 2001, meredith wrote: > -- No members of either of the first two groups will ever change their > minds, no matter what anyone else says. While I'm not asking for another flamewar or anything, this last item isn't strictly true. I *did* change my mind after a lot of research, and a bunch of speaking with (in person) and listening to (at conferences) artist and label representatives of various sizes and sales strata. - -- d. np b'ehl _bright eyes_ - - oh no, you've just read mail from doug = dmw@radix.net - get yr pathos - - www.pathetic-caverns.com -- books, flicks, tunes, etc. = reviews - - www.fecklessbeast.com -- angst, guilt, fear, betrayal! = guitar pop ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 13:18:19 -0000 From: "Adam K." Subject: Jeff Noon review Off topic, I realise, but I found this in The Big Issue -- "Jeff Noon's last experiment in dub literature, Needle In The Groove, worked because he kept his eye on the narrative horizon and anchored his avant-gardism to ocean-deep grooves of plot and character. Here, he takes those 'remixing' techniques to new extremes, and drips language through a series of technological linguisitic filters. It's a virtuoso performance, but ultimately it reads like a Mad Professor remix of classic reggae tracks: too much cleverness, not enough feeling." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 13:42:52 -0000 From: "Adam K." Subject: Melissa Ferrick -- another convert/Maureen Monroe -- a half-baked appraisal. I've been meaning to say that the cd that is currently stuck in my head is Melissa Ferrick's "Everything I Need" --- what a fantastic album! I had my doubts about her based on "Massive Blur" (liked a couple of tracks, felt indifferent about the rest) as I mentioned here a while back, but I followed the Ecto guide and got Everything I Need, and now it's one of my best buys of the year so far. There isn't a dud track on it, and how she gets such a great and full sound out of just three people is beyond me. It has SUCH an energy and drive to it, even the slow songs have a compulsive beauty about them that sucks you in. I would love to see her live, and hope that she tours this side of the ocean at some point. Thanks again, Ecto people, for introducing me to some GREAT music! Meanwhile, I had hoped to chime in with my thoughts on Maureen Monroe, earlier suggested to the list by Ellen Rawson, but unfortunately left her cd at work, and I'm laid up, ill, at home. So far, though, on one and a half listens, I'd say "Yay!" -- simple instrumentation -- two acoustic guitars, a cello and a strong voice -- and some lovely lyrics. If I had to compare, I'd say it's like Dar Williams Unplugged. Although it veers uncomfortably close to Country for me at times, I like it enough to recommend it, and actually want to get back to work so I can listen to it again! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 21:30:18 -0700 From: Neal Copperman Subject: tegan and sara tour Hey all, Cindy Lee Berryhill's been working with Tegan and Sara, and wanted to give ectofolk a heads up about their upcoming east coast tour. I personally don't know a thing about Tegan and Sara, but would be intrigued just cause Cindy Lee recommended them. I know there's been a mention here and there in the past. Anyone have any comments about them? TEGAN AND SARA US tour!!!!!!! (more dates to come...) March 1 Bowery Ballroom in NY, NY (with the Old 97's) March 2 Valentines in Albany, NY (with Melissa Ferrick) March 4 Pearl Street in Northampton, MA (with MF) March 5 TT the Bear's in Cambidge, MA March 7 The Khyber in Philadelphia, PA March 8 Lupos in Providence, RI (with MF) March 9 Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ (with MF) March 10 Babes in Richmond, VA (with MF) March 11 Local 506 in Chapel Hill, NC (with MF) March 12 Eddie's Attic in Atlanta, GA (with MF) March 14 The Khyber in Philadelphia, PA http://www.vaporrecords.com for Tegan and Sara info. Also, looks like Cindy Lee's doing a bit of recording. Always good in my eyes, as it seems like she always has a handful of newish songs that I really like. She played several that were great when she was here. She said she's working with an upright bassist, cellist and vibes player. Sounds like a Garage Orchestra again! She's got a few shows coming up too, but just in SoCal. From Cindy Lee's page: http://www.mwpsoft.com/clb/ (only useful info is in the chat room) Date: Friday, 26 January 2001, at 11:55 a.m. Here is the word on my next few performances. I'll be at LARGO in Los Angeles FRIDAY FEBRUARY 23 opening for the super talented Jon Brion. I'll have Renata and Joyce playing cellos with me and Kim Fox is gonna help with singing. I'm psyched about this one. Fridays at Largo usually sell out early and there's often a bunch of folks that don't make it in, so make a reservation early(or get there early to stand in the back). Largo is a very cool LA joint. If you want to come come early or make a dinner reservation - call 323-852-1851. Largo is at 432 North Fairfax Ave, West Hollywood - across from Cantor's Deli. THEN... SATURDAY FEB. 24 8PM @ $10 I'll be performing at DIZZY'S in downtown San Diego. This will be a double bill with my musical friend, the jazzy songbird Joy Eden Harrison. I'll also have cellists Renata Bratt and Joyce Rooks on this night. Dizzys is a small art-warehouse type space and is quite small, with a capactiy of about 70 so get there early if you want a seat! I've recently moved to Venice Beach in LA so this is a farewell to San Diego of sorts(of course ill be back for future shows). neal np: Faithless - Marianne Faithfull ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #54 *************************
