I nearly bumped into her - literally - last week coming out of a convenience store near work. I didn't say anything because I didn't think she'd want to be bothered, and then was kicking myself later since she's probably not well enough known even here for it to be a bother to her. Still made my day though. :-) Steve ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Feb 2001 01:42:42 -0800 From: "Troy J. Shadbolt" Subject: Live From New York Concert- San Francisco 2/9 Well, just got home from one of the more entertaining shows i've seen in a while. Live from New York is five of the New York Coffee shop players on tour on the west coast. Here's the lineup - - Edie Carey - - Teddy Goldstein - - Anne Heaton - - Andrew Kerr - - Sam Shaber I went to this solely to hear Anne. Talk about the biggest understatement of the century. These five did, in the span of nearly three hours, no less than 20 songs; essentially four from each. All backing each other up to some extent. Here are some quick highlights. Teddy Goldstein is by far the virtuoso musican of the group, taking most of the difficult guitar pieces, and adding harmonica lines to a number of songs. Andrew Kerr has one of the most twisted (in a nice way) senses of humor on the planet- and he can rap! Anne is now the offical holder of "best piano chick" in my book. Sam Shaber has a great lyric line and can do some impressive gospel sounds. Edie Carey- impressive and has that Lucy Kaplanski ability to make perfect harmonies for anything. Highlights- Anne beating the crap out of the piano on "Spinning" - Sam & Edie doing some really great harmonies for each other - Teddy's hilarious soungs - Andrew's sense of twisted humor. Probably the best $14 i've spent in years (and that was $12 for the ticket and $2 to cross the bridge. They had a special "live" cd available for $10 if you bought another packaged album. No sweat. Y'all that can make it to Meth's house to hear Teddy & Anne- I'm am BIG TIME jealous! troy ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Feb 2001 09:21:22 +0000 From: runly@hvi.net Subject: Epiphany Project's Bet Williams solo show > ****BET WILLIAMS in CHESTERTOWN, MD.***** > *************at ANDYs******************* > > Andy's is at > 337 1/2 High St. > (410) 778-6779 > This Saturday Night! > FEB 10 at 9:00pm > > Hey if you're near (or even far... roadtrip) this sweet small town. It should be understood that this was a great concert, but there was someone else which is worth mentioning. When having dinner before the show, we talked about our bad experience with support acts (of which we had more than our share). So, when checking out the empty stage we said, "let's hope we don't have a support act tonight". But there was, a single woman went on stage, a woman with a guitar, a woman with a guitar and a VOICE! We were standing pretty far away from the stage so that we didn't see much. When that woman started to talk, we said "that voice sounds familiar". When she started to sing we knew at once who she was... Katharina Franck, from Rainbirds! WOW!!! So we got a marvelous 30 minutes acoustic solo set by Katharina, mostly Rainbirds songs, some new ones by pure luck. Thanks to whoever signed her for the german leg of Ani's tour! Her songs were accepted very enthusiastically by the crowd, although I'm pretty certain that most of them didn't know her. The other Katharina news is that she will be touring with brazilian singers and musicians Rosanna and Zelia in the second half of march. Check out www.rainbirds.com for details. Returning to check out some new Bobo songs ... ... keep on listening ... I've only come across 4 of them in the "box", but I have a sneaking suspicion that there are still a few more lurking around. You see I recently moved and all of the CD inventory is currently in a shed. A very cold shed, which limits the time I can stay out there foraging. So what I'm gonna do is honor the requests in the order that they arrived via email. I will put everyone else's requests in numerical order and if I come across any more I will notify you. I can't think of a better way and I think this is fair, rather than start some stupid bidding process. I did come across 23 copies of Happy's radio promo EP for Building the Colossus. This 4 song Cd includes Hold Me, a radio mix of Glory, and an acoustic version of Collective Heart and one (acostic)of Look for the Child as well. I enjoyed the Hellraiser series, loved Event Horizon and in general have no problem with violent or gruesome movies. I loved Silence of the Lambs. I felt assaulted when I walked out of Hannibal. Like the entire point of the movie was to disturb and upset me. I felt sick and I felt like crying. I felt a little ashamed of human nature that we would all want to go and see that. And now, every time I see someone I have to tell them - 'Don't see Hannibal'. 'See Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, see The Emperors New Groove (really), see anything, but don't see Hannibal'. Of course, many will disagree with me I'm sure. An effort several years ago to build an ecto room and channel on a MUSH server did not last long. Another online environment I am involved with experimented with a Yahoo chat room last year, it apparently failed too. I, at least, found it next to impossible to join that room successfully. We also dabbled there in audio chat, and I, at least, absolutely could not get the thing to work. Asynchronous CMC is gonna be going strong for a long time to come. Last night the New Haven Folk Alliance brought Mary Gauthier to town for the first time. I saw her last summer at Falcon Ridge and was intrigued, and considered it a worthwhile reason to blow off Sarah Harmer at the Iron Horse (NHFA obligations notwithstanding). She certainly didn't disappoint. Opening was A.J. Gundell, a local sensitive singer/songwriter whose only claim to fame appears to be that as musical coordinator for _All My Children_ he has won 7 Emmys. I didn't hear much of his set because I was working the ticket table, but what I did hear wasn't repulsive. I guess I'd file him in the "nothing special" category and move on. Mary came onstage and immediately charmed everyone with a hilarious story setting up her opening song, "Camelot Motel", which contains a rhyme of which she is immensely proud: as far as she knows, not even Bob Dylan thought to rhyme "kitchenette" with "cigarette". :) Her music is very laid-back, by-the-campfire twangy country, sort of like if Ferron sang Iris DeMent's songs (provided Iris had Steve Earle's life story). Her songs are almost exclusively about drugs, living on the streets, hardship, and death (one of her newest songs is "a depressing Christmas song. Yes, it can be done"), but the experience of listening to them in live performance is made tolerable by her funny storytelling in between. You end up feeling uplifted by the experience, because here is someone who went about as low as you can go, and not only made it through but is thriving now. It was great to talk to her - she's *very* nice, and as funny in person as she is on stage. She is in the process of moving to Nashville after 14 years in Boston, and has been invited to play the main stage at Falcon Ridge this summer with her band. She said she has never done a house concert because she's scared - they're so intimate, and she wouldn't want to frighten anyone in the audience. I tried to convince her that wouldn't be the case at all, but I don't think I succeeded. Still, I told her to contact me if she should ever change her mind and decide to try it out. :) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Feb 2001 12:33:35 -0700 From: Jess Byers Subject: andy stochansky california tour this is from andy' stochansky's mailing list. fyi. - ----------------------------------------- Hey! Here it is, the Itinerary for the California tour. It will be all duo shows with our trusty guitarist Les Cooper. The LA Times on listening to the CD have already chosen the show the "pick of the week" so this is really exciting. All Andy can talk about is, some place called "Sushi On Tap" in LA, where all the Japanese staff break into big Broadway type tap dancing productions every 20 minutes and then resume working as if nothing out of the ordinary just happened. An pretty much completely dead, i believe. i had a bit of a nostalgia trip on irc about a year ago, and i did get in touch with quite a few people from the irc days (mostly from the latter days in #indigo-girls, when most of the remaining #ecto community had migrated). i even witnessed four or five people on at once, at one point! (kind of sad that that seems like an accomplishment now.) i have so many great memories from that time... but it's true, you really cannot go back. > effort several years ago to build an ecto room and channel on a MUSH > server did not last long. it was quite a bit of fun while it lasted, though. every half year or so for literally years afterwards, steve fagg and i (at least) would head back individually for a stroll through the `ecto ghost town', and would leave each other messages on our respective `answering machines' (mine was a big ear on the wall), that the other would get months later... but aside from that, also dead. i believe it's all still there, though - tinycwru must be one of the longest-running institutions on the net. now a lot of the old guard are even off the *list*... how times change. and ah, sweet nostalgia. - -damon Damon Harper _/\_ "Only two things are infinite: damon@usrbin.ca __\ /__ the universe and human stupid- \ / ity. Hello all, All of a sudden Dido is becoming big news, at least here in Australia, and in the UK (so I understand). All on the back of the sampling of "Thank You" on Eminem's "Stan". The result of this new found fame is that the "No Angel" album is being heavily promoted, released in countries it wasn't released in before, new singles are being picked etc. All of which reminds me of Jewel circa 1998. "Pieces Of You" had been out for quite a while (years in fact), then a single takes off and wham! The album gets hawked endlessly around, Jewel tours it incessantly and, unfortunately, new material gets junked. Does anyone else out there worry that this is going to happen to Dido? "No Angel" is an excellent album in my book, but already I'm worrying when we're going to see new material. Those of us unfortunate enough to be outside North America have been starved of live appearances, so at least the new level of interest might lead to more touring activity, but I get paranoid, y'know? Someone feel like reassuring me?
