John - -- RAVEN ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Feb 2001 10:25:01 PST From: eperkins@surfbest.net Subject: Erica Ballinger, etc. [demime could not interpret encoding binary - treating as plain text] On a recent shopping spree at CDBaby, I ordered Erica Ballinger's new, live CD, Live at the Cat Hair House. It's a recording of a show she did in Seattle, and if you like blues/jazz-influenced music, I highly recommend this album. It shows off Erica's low, bluesy vocals much better than her EP, Life, though that is also worth getting for some of the songs that aren't on the live album. In a separate purchase, I ordered Pamela Means' live album, Pearls. As expected, it's great, but I don't think it really captures the powerfulness of her live performances. Then again, maybe it's just not possible to capture that on a recording. I've also been listening non-stop to a ton of music I'd been meaning to pick up for a while--Hannah Fury, Terami Hirsch, and Erin McKeown (who I saw a month or so ago at the Rose Street House of Music in Berkeley, where they had to turn 100 people away at the door and said they were going to have a second concert after the one I attended), as well as some older discs I've just gotten around to getting, like Caterwaul's Portent Hue and Hugo Largo's Mettle. The one recent purchase I've been a little disappointed in is Sarah Harmer's disc. I'm still planning to give it another chance since I've heard such good things about it, but it didn't make much of an impression on the first couple of listens. At least I was able to pick it up at a steal--Amoeba in SF had a bunch of copies of it for $5 or something like that. - -Emily This message powered by EMUMAIL. -- http://www.EMUMAIL.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Feb 2001 11:21:08 -0800 (PST) From: Ellen Rawson Subject: Re: Erica Ballinger, etc. and return to Ecto - --- eperkins@surfbest.net wrote: The one recent purchase > I've been a little > disappointed in is Sarah Harmer's disc. You still may not like, but I'd give it some more tries. I wasn't sure at first either, but I wound up really liking it. (I have a review of it on the www.femmusic.com site.) It probably helped that I saw her live first. Hello, Ecto! I'm back after a good six months away. I used to live and teach in Boulder, Colorado, but now I'm in England. Most of the time I'm outside of London, where I teach, but I spend some weekends down in the New Forest, where the boyfriend is. I haven't been to too many shows yet (my job is at an American boarding school, and as a faculty resident, I have to be on duty some nights and weekends), but I'm trying to get out more. (I'm also limited by the fact that I don't particularly want to drive to central London, and the last train out here is at 11:30 PM.) I missed Eddi Reader last week, but I hope to catch her at Union Chapel in April. I did see Eliza Carthy on tour last fall (as well as Chris While and Julie Matthews), and I'm seeing All About Eve open for Fairport Convention in Basingstoke this Sunday. There's a good, up-and-coming singer-songwriter who teaches music at this school, btw. She's Maureen Munroe, and she had a CD release party in late August in Islington -- a name to look for!
