There don't seem to be any sound bites on their web site. (Not exactly an efficient use of an artist/label site IMO.) Anyway, I'm interested, but I wouldn't mind hearing a sample first, at that price. I'm looking for gig >places in NYC that would be appropriate for my "act": it's basically a >singer/songwriter (me :)) whose instrument is piano and is usually >accompanied by a drummer. Artists who have a few releases under their belts find it hard to get in to Fez, so I think you've got your sights set a little bit high there ... in NYC I would say the best bet for you would be The Living Room, followed by Arlene Grocery. Both places pay their performers on a pass-the-bucket basis, but they're both considered good places to start building a following. (The Living Room has a tiny upright piano that is never, ever in tune - and Arlene Grocery has none. Do you have an electric piano for gigging out? If not, that will severely restrict your options.) Heading in the other direction, Fire & Water in Northampton, MA is another option. They're a vegetarian cafe that hosts all manner of musical performances, also on a pass-the-bucket basis. A lot of the local college students start playing out there, as well as regional and national touring musicians looking for a low-key place to try out new things. I don't have contact info for any of these venues readily to hand, but they all have web sites. >(I'm starting to suspect that Koffee? and The Acoustic Cafe are the ONLY >venues in the entire state appropriate for said genre. :() You're probably right ... at least until Steve Rodgers (formerly of local band Mighty Purple) starts up his Monday open mic nights in Hamden again. I think he's going to do that this spring sometime. BTW, Koffee? has stopped having music. It seems the complaints from students trying to study in the din from people talking WAY too loudly (usually drowning out the music whenever there was any) outweighed the additional revenue the coffeehouse generated from bringing in people who would otherwise never set foot in there to hear the music. Harumph. (Pamela Means and Robert Messore are doing a gig there on Feb. 23, but that's only because it was originally scheduled for last summer and they've had to reschedule it at least four times that I know of, for various reasons.) I hope this helps... +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Feb 2001 14:13:12 -0800 From: lanblind@teleport.com Subject: Re: ecto-digest V7 #38 Hello all and I just wanted to let everyone know that LAND OF THE BLIND's new album, ORDINARY MAGIC, is, after 2 and 1/2 years, actually in my hands. Whilst driving home through the latest blizzard this afternoon, I heard on NPR a review of a new CD by a group from Chicago called Pinetop Seven. They are a "surrealist folk" group that recently improvised the score to a screening of a silent movie at the University of Chicago, if that helps describe them. Male vocals ( :), but intriguing nonetheless. I think NPR did an interview with them recently, or else I'm having premonitions in my dreams again. Anyone have any real-life experience with them? I'm seriously considering ordering their CD - the samples I heard in the review were really good. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Feb 2001 19:08:59 -0500 From: Paul Blair Subject: Overwhelming to some, Addicting to many...
