There's no way Eno would be involved -- nostalgia's not his style, and I remember reading a quote from him on his leaving the band, in which he walked down the street after quitting thinking "My god, I'm free! I'm free!". I also love those first handful of albums, and play them regularly. Oddly enough, when the Roxy reunion was first mentioned on this list, I was listening to "801 Live", which is a stunning Manzanera project that he has a BIG hand in (compare with "801 Live at Manchester University", done a year laterand without him, which is weedy amateur night in comparison). After years of hearing about Roxy Music, I bought "Manifesto" when it came out, having read great reviews along the lines of the boys being back on form, etc... I think I played it four or five times, but found it so slick and MOR, I got bored, gave up, sold it. I went to see them in concert, and even that wasn't the blast I hoped it would be: Manzanera hiding behind the amps, Ferry doing his bizarre chicken-dance. In a way, they were predicting the 80's, the New Romantics and slick white soul, but this isn't necessarily a good thing. Ferry and Roxy helped set up this "psychedelic lounge-lizards" - type club scene. Arguments often ensued amongst the sharply-dressed-and-coiffed Ferry-Fans about which two fingers on the right hand he used to smoke his cigarette. His exact hairstyle became almost a matter of national importance to some. Amongst those who think Armani suits and expensive shoes by guys called Bruno are really cool, he was revered as an icon of style, which in retrospect is rather humorous, as I recall that the entire Legion of Bryans at the time being to a man, complete and utter Wallies. All polyester image, no substance, and a hopped-up 4-cylinder Ford Anglia with faux leopard skin seats and velvet furry dice. (Unlike, of course, we totally cool prog-rock hippies, who emphasized our utter disdain for fashion fads and our fierce resistance to conformity, by essentially dressing all alike, except for the accessories, the overall effect of which was to make us all look like refugees from an expatriate Lithuanian circus troupe). I was never actually sure if this was the original intention, I'd have to ask around. More. I just got the new Ekova cd SPACE LULLABIES AND OTHER FANTASMORGE. It's fab, equal parts techno and acoustic-ethnic, with Deirdre's Lisa Gerrard by way of Yma Sumac vocals gracing the whole thing. It's atomospheric and haunting, yes, but it also has attitude, like a fierce Parsian drag queen. The new Basque FALLING FORWARD is even more melodic than RADIATE; Maryesque's voice slips into scatting and Brandt's bass is jazz-scented. A couple of the songs are downright catchy, in an obtuse, ephemeral Basque-way. I want to thank Ecto for introducing me to Hannah Fury and Seely's WINTER BIRDS. - --Craig. __________________________________________________ Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Last night I was privileged to be part of the audience for an incredibly kickass show at the Iron Horse: Edie Carey, Melissa Ferrick, and Pamela Means. Since word had gotten out that Melissa Ferrick was on the bill, the room was sold out. I lucked out, because even though I got there only a couple minutes before it started I got a great seat at a prime table, because it was a table for 4 and there were only 3 women sitting at it. Edie started things off, and was as charmingly goofy as always. It was her first time playing at the Iron Horse (what a debut, playing to a packed house like that), and I think she made quite a few new fans. Melissa and Pamela each joined her on stage for a song, Melissa singing backup and Pamela playing guitar. Melissa was next, accompanied by a drummer. Although she was only playing an acoustic guitar, she managed to sound like a five-piece band in that configuration. (It always amazes me how well she's able to get a bass line going on the guitar.) She had a few new songs, which really rocked. She had Edie and Pamela come up to sing backup on a couple songs. Then (after half the audience left -- I'm starting to get the impression that Melissa Ferrick fans are every bit as annoying as Ani DiFranco fans, and not just because there's a lot of overlap), it was Pamela's turn. She too had a drummer. She did a few songs on acoustic guitar, but much to my joy much of the set was on her gorgeous big orange electric guitar. The highlight was "Yours", which featured shimmering guitar and a lovely groove and Edie and Melissa singing backup. But lest we forget that this was a Pamela Means show, she did break two strings on the acoustic. :) The second string broke halfway through "Maybe You Should" (a bit later than usual ;), so she had Jason do a drum solo while she switched to the electric to finish the song. It was great. What a great night of music. Watching three good friends share the same stage, in a room full of people who truly appreciated their music was a wonderful way to spend an evening. It was definitely worth the drive home through the fog. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2001 22:30:21 EST From: Chikaskia@aol.com Subject: Re: kirsty macccoll tribute. i am calculating when the tribute will air in north america, and have come up with 4am pacific and 7am eastern, thursday morning, is this right?
