This particular claim is un-true. DTV recorders are available now (Expensive!!!!) and they are going to be here for the duration. I work in a TV station and the worst thing the FCC has come up with so far is to tell us (TV) that when we have HDTV (after 2006 there will be no NTSC- today's TV standard- if you don't buy a big wide screen you will >have to< buy a set-top converter) we will have to run it at full power only, which will cost us (TV) 3 or 4 times as much for power usage. Subject: ani -- from niether a fan or non-fan perspective As I mentioned before, I discovered Ani for myself after seeing her live and being bowled over, and then getting Living In Clip. I kind of liked the album, but thought it went on a bit, and kept thinking "Hasn't she done this one already?" My first studio cd of hers was "Little Plastic Castle", which I kind of liked, but I still think she works better live. Even "Not a Pretty Girl" doesn't excite me as much as I know it should, and "Up Up Up Up..." (however many) almost put me off altogether. I wanted to like it, honest, but it was either more of the same or songs that needlessly outstayed their welcome, as if repeating a phrase over and over again (come away from it, hat shaped hat) justified their length. I think I made a mistake by not picking up "To the Teeth" when it came around, and I still have the rest of her back-catalogue to get through, so there's hope for me yet. I still admire her and think she's great, but am just not engaged by her -- there's something of a precocious, hyper-active child about her that wears me down. (Mind you, as long as *cough*cough*cough comparisons are being drawn, I'm the one who doesn't think that Tori's done a decent album since Little Earthquakes. *cough*cough*splutter*cough...) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Jan 2001 21:58:51 -0800 From: Neile Graham Subject: Help with Ashley Maher for the Ectophiles' Guide Hi, all-- Just wanted to say that thanks to Jack Sutton, I have the info I need. - --Neile n.p. Could someone fill me in on this genre? I first heard the term about a year ago, when a jazz radio station over here, playing innocuous, elevator-type jazz, kept referring to it. And why? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 23:00:17 +0000 From: jjhanson@att.net Subject: Re: "Smooth" Jazz? My understanding of the origin of the genre is that it came about as sort of a backlash against the New Age moniker. Many New Age artists never considered themselves "New Age" because they didn't buy into the metaphysical, spiritual beliefs associated with the term --however their music tended to be smooth, instrumental or possibly with soft vocals (like most New Age music). Many fans felt the same way--so somebody coined the term "smooth jazz" to help describe this type of music. So basically it was just a big marketing ploy to still promote soothing music without it suffering from the backlash against the term New Age. Of course there are people who will tell you that there is a difference between New Age and smooth jazz--but I think a lot of artists could easily be placed in both. My question--which "smooth jazz" artists would ectophiles recommend? One of my favorites would be Holly Cole (who varies from true jazz, to smooth jazz to pop) and Caecillie Norby. When did this >genre arise, and what does it consititute? > >And why? > KKSF in San Francisco labels itself as a "smooth jazz" station. It is hard to explain. When I lived in SF, and had a 45-minute freeway commute, I used to listen to their morning show, where they played a couple of hours of commercial-free music. What a nice way to wake up. (Yes, I drove my car to work half in my sleep). Many a morning they would play great music, much of which I ended up buying. Bonnie Raitt, Migul Bos, Everything But The Girl, Enya, David Lanz. These are all artists which I discovered via KKSF. But, many other times KKSF plays just "innocuous, elevator-type" music as you call it. Very boring music lacking identity. Lacking flavor. Lacking, well, music. I suppose this is what "smooth jazz" is all about. More like Elevator Music, Phase 2. So, my point is, "smooth jazz" stations can have excellent programming, and are worth listening to. Save for those times when they play, well, smooth jazz. - - Bill G. nr: North to the Night, by Alvah Simon (just finished it, actually; HIGHLY recommend it). np: Yes - _Tormato_. To bring things back to music... Carl Adami, known to many ectophiles as Happy's bass player, has a new outfit called Outloud Dreamer. Their CD just came out, and it's really *really* good. Sarah Medenbach, the singer sounds a lot like Katell Keineg, though I don't think she's as much of an acquired taste as Katell can be. The music at times sounds quite reminiscent of Fiona Apple.
