Her songs are incredibly catchy, original, clever and sometimes quite funny too. Her voice reminds me a lot of Anne Heaton's, armed w/ a guitar. Sometimes her music can resemble early Shawn Colvin...anyway I definatly think you guys should give Kristy a listen! :-) ~eric "I've seen plays that were better than this- honest to god-PLAYS!" ~Homer Simpson ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Jan 2001 03:00:05 -0500 (EST) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friends... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ************* Sarah Noelle Pratt Ferguson (snpf@netscape.com) ************* ********************* David Beery (drum@traverse.net) ********************* *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Sarah Noelle Pratt Ferguson Tue January 20 1970 Seanympf-Aquarius David Beery Tue January 20 1976 drum Terry Partis Sun January 22 1933 Rocker Sarah McLachlan Sun January 28 1968 Aquarius Ilka Heber Mon February 01 1965 Mermaid Bob Lovejoy Sun February 02 1947 Aquarius Diane Burke Sat February 02 1963 slow children Timothy S. Ani DiFranco has wrapped up the recording of two new albums, both due April 10th. The twenty-eight songs that make up the sister records, Revelling and Reckoning, will be divided between them according to the album titles' themes. Among the tracks included are "Subdivision," "So What" and "Garden of Simple," which DiFranco has performed in concert over the past year. The albums were recorded in Austin, Texas, with DiFranco's touring band: Jason Mercer (bass), Daren Hahn (drums), Julie Wolf (keyboards), Shane Endsley (trumpet) and Hans Teuber (sax). DiFranco's last full-length release, To the Teeth, emphasized the horn section and Revelling and Reckoning will continue that, as well as feature several instrumentals. The album also features special guests Maceo Parker, who also played sax on To The Teeth, experimental composer/trumpet player John Hassell and slide guitarist Lloyd Maines, father of Dixie Chick Natalie Maines. Not one to stay off the road for too long, DiFranco begins touring Europe again at the end of January and returns to the U.S. for a North American tour beginning in March 27th in Portland, Maine. Other confirmed cities are Ottawa; Buffalo; Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Kansas City, Missouri. More dates are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. by CHRISTINA SARACENO (January 13, 2001)" enjoy! heidi. - ------ "i want so much to write well, though i know i don't ... but during and at the end of my life, i will adore those who have." -- *dorothy parker* * heidi maier - maier@joynet.com.au * ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Jan 2001 10:21:35 -0500 From: Valerie Richardson Subject: The Peacocks I listened briefly to the Alice Peacock CD, but I didn't think much of it, standard honky-tonk sort of of country. The Peacock that I'm crazy about currently is Annette Peacock. She wrote compositions for Paul Bley in the 1960s and 70s. She hasn't recorded frequently since then, but her new CD _An Acrobat's Heart_ is beautiful. She recorded it with the Cikada String Quartet of Norway, and Peacock herself sings and plays the piano. The songs are very spare and dark and seem to come from someplace far away. I think of Robin Holcomb when I listen to her, although Peacock's work is very different and composed much more around standard jazz scales. - --Valerie Richardson Neal Copperman wrote: > > Anyone heard of Alice Peacock or have any thoughts about her? Since there's been a fair deal of discussion on here about live shows vs. studio albums, I thought that I'd digress a little and talk about the two live albums that I just received, since I think that it ties in quite a bit to this topic. The first one is Cowboy Junkies' "Waltz Across America." I caught the end of this tour in Ottawa, and was entirely blown away. Their slower stuff was full of subtly restrained rage and passion, and their more rockish stuff was just an all-out assault. My girlfriend, who's not much of a music fan, basically convinced me after the show to go and buy a handful of their CDs (which didn't take too much convincing - I'd always been fond of their stuff and had never just gotten around to buying any, and I was also really impressed by the show.) So anyways, I was rather looking forward to this live album. It's only had one listen through so far, but unfortunately that listen was more than a little disappointing. The songs that I remembered as subtly restrained just sounded tired. The beautifully agressive guitar work had just turned into guitar solos that, while technically impressive, went on and on and on... As an interesting side mention, for some reason, "Waltz" also made me think instantly of Natalie Merchant - something that the Junkies have never made me do before. Something about Margo's voice. But that's neither really here nor there. So, for me, this was an example of how even *recordings* of a good show can lose the intensity and immediacy that the show had, in the lack of the accompanying vibe. I suspect that I'll come to enjoy "Waltz" - a couple tracks stood out even on my first listen - but it's it's definitely not the live show that I saw that blew me away. The second live CD that I got was "Creepy Crawly Live" by First of June. I know that FoJ have been mentioned on here before, but I love to plug them whenever I can. :) This live CD was in many ways the opposite of the Junkies CD. I was actually at the show that they recorded, and the show wasn't really outstanding in any way. It was at Zaphod's 2, unquestionably the worst venue for live music in Ottawa (now thankfully closed), and people were talking loudly all the way through the show. (I saw some bands I really liked play Zaph's 2 and never saw anything I'd consider a good show... yuck. The space was set up SO badly - but that's another rant.) I remember thinking that FoJ sounded really tight, and I enjoyed the set, but it didn't make my outstanding list. On the CD, on the other hand, it sounded really good. It didn't have the rather overproduced (on a cheap budget) sound that FoJ's first studio album had, but instead an almost organic sound -- which had the effect of making them sound even MORE "more tori than tori" than they normally do. :) I think the fact that I rather enjoyed this, however, came in part from the fact that it didn't really sound like a live album, but like the studio album that I can't help but think they *should* have recorded. There weren't long applause sections - in fact, I think the noise between songs really was just the background noise in the club actually making it onto their directed mics. There weren't long long solos. Just solid music. Somehow, these CDs seem to very clearly suggest to me the difference between good live music and good recorded music. Live music is as much about maintaining the energy of the crowd as anything else - and a lot of stuff that works really well for that just isn't as good if you're not there. ian. (oh, go listen to FoJ at www.mp3.com/firstofjune/ if the description sounds interesting. they're really good, they're from ottawa, and they actually list veda hille on their influences list... :) ). - -- ian clysdale | "i don't think the typical student dwells on death ian@redmaplegrove.org | and violence" - elaine evans, crown attorney ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 01:32:06 +1000 From: "Heidi Maier" Subject: more ani. and another article, also, for those who are interested: "Ani DiFranco Readies Double Album, Tour Jan 11, 2001, 5:05 pm PT Prolific is the most fitting way to describe folkie Ani DiFranco who, fresh off a tour of the United States last fall, and soon to be playing dates around the world, will be releasing a new album on April 10 on her own Righteous Babe Records.
