Keller" Subject: shivaree etc. Just to complete the spectrum...I read some really good press about Shivaree, and went to see them at Baby Jupiter here in New York. Got there late, standing room only...and I lasted about =two= songs before I was too bored to stand still any longer, and I left. No interest at all in the music; too countryish, I suspect. (Yes, I realize it wasn't a fair sample; but my extensive experience indicates when I have =that= negative a reaction, staying for the whole set doesn't change my opinion.) Just for a data point, I had a similar reaction the couple times I happened to see Elliott Smith. Neal: That sounds like a really interesting piano recital; would you mind listing the titles of the pieces? Ruth Crawford, by the way, in the past often referred to as Ruth Crawford Seeger, was married to Charles Seeger, father of Pete and Peggy; the latter was married to Ewan MacColl (author of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"), who was Kirsty MacColl's father. Very talented musical family. Ruth Crawford was one of the most important early-20th century composers (along with Ives and Henry Cowell and the like); very concentrated, very dissonant, very innovative. There are several recent discs of her music I recommend. Must have been something short of Morton Feldman's; his best piano piece, =Triadic Memories= (which I think Takahashi has recorded, but I've got a different one), is over an hour long, and so are some of his others. Another vote for Yes' "Heart of the Sunrise." The instrumental intro (3 minutes of a 10-minute piece) is one of their greatest moments. I'll also mention the opening of King Crimson's "Starless," all mellotron and lead guitar; what is curious is that the =middle= section of that piece is quite similar to the opening of "Heart of the Sunrise," strong bassline against obsessive guitar, and Bill Bruford playing a very similar part! I was fortunate enough to see Genesis with Peter Gabriel in late 1973 (the best live show I've ever seen). They began with "Watcher of the Skies" in pitch darkness, except for Gabriel's fluorescent green eye-paint. Amazingly eerie. Can someone post a brief review of Emiliana Torrini's album? I've seen it used a couple of times and have thought about it, but passed so far. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2001 10:42:27 -0500 From: recount chocula Subject: upcoming nyc/new england shows upcoming live shows in and around nyc and southern new england that may (or may not) be of interest: 17 january amy correia, fez 17 january sarah dougher, knitting factory old office 18 january babe the blue ox, knitting factory 20 january amy correia, fez 24 january amy fairchild, maxwell's 24 january sarah dougher, knitting factory old office 26 january the nields, wilde auditorium (hartford, ct) 29 january sloan wainwright, the living room 30 january pamela means & sarah slean, iron horse (northampton, ma) 31 january jennifer nettles band, mercury lounge 31 january sarah dougher, knitting factory old office 1 february richard shindell, towne crier (pawling, ny) 3 february richard shindell, wilde auditorium (hartford, ct) 3 february patti rothberg, fez 4 february ashley macissac, iron horse (northampton, ma) 7 february amy correia, fez 8 february lunasa, wilde auditorium (hartford, ct) 9 february sarah harmer, iron horse (northampton, ma) 9 february shipping news, knitting factory 10 february pamela means, postcrypt coffeehouse 10 february erin mckeown, iron horse (northampton, ma) 14 february mila drumke, fez 14 february syd straw's "heart-wreck show", mercury lounge 16 february coldplay, irving plaza 16 february jess klein, iron horse (northampton, ma) 17 february the kennedys, acoustic cafe (bridgeport, ct) 17 february trish mccall, arlene grocery 23 february sloan wainwright, towne crier (pawling, ny) 23 february pamela means, koffee? It was a first-person narrative of his experiences traveling with Dr. King through the South, I think as part of the SCLC. If I remember correctly, according to the song, Staples (or at least the song's narrator) was in the hotel room when Dr. King got shot out on the balcony.
