Having been an accomplice to his crashing the showcases in Albuquerque a couple of years ago, I wanted to add my enthusiasm to his. While purportedly a type of 'industry' conference -- it *does* have some useful workshops & a vendor / musician exhibit hall for the paying participants -- the great thing about it is the music ... the free music. Evenings through early a.m., the conference hotel(s) have several floors filled with hotel room showcases, not to mention people playing & singing in the lobbies, elevators, etc. ... Its a great chance to discover new music. There are both nationally/internationally-known performers and folks who are known only regionally. (last year in Cleveland was *finally* my chance to see/hear Veda Hille - all to short, btw) There's also a 'formal' (as in pay $) concert on Wednesday night (14th) at The Commodore (including Joaquin Diaz , Lunasa with Susan McKeown, Gjallarhorn, The Puentes Brothers, Richard Wood and JP Cormier). I just heard Rachael Sage play live yesterday. She mentioned something about not being able to sell them 'til March due to some industry quirk, but that they are in boxes in her home. She remarked that you could probably just "ring her doorbell" for one. That would be great, except that I don't have her address (gryn). So, even though I am a devoted fan, seeing her and her band frequently for nearly five years, I do not, as yet, have my own copy. I admire Meredith's nefariousness! The rest of us will have to go to MP3.com and get "Assorted Tchatchkes" to quell some yearnings. When last we left our heroes, meredith exclaimed: Ian inquired: >Is that actually out yet, or do you just have nefarious ways of hearing it before mere mortals? :) I must admit to nefarious ways. :} It'll be out in March, I believe. I'm only on first listen, but I can pretty safely say that if you like what Rachael's been doing, you're gonna *love* this. Very tasty stuff. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2001 13:25:18 -0500 From: Valerie Richardson Subject: Radio playlist I've been on Ecto for a while, although I rarely venture out of lurkerdom. I always love the end-of-the year notable music lists, particularly this year since I didn't seem to acquire much music myself. On my show on WPKN this past Friday, I featured a number of the 2000 pick hits from Ecto (as well as a few from the New York Times). There are also some older things thrown in the mix. There were a lot of things that sounded interesting from your descriptions but that didn't make it on to this show. They are packed away somewhere in boxes. But the other day, a friend gave me a copy of Painting of a Painting that came in the mail to the magazine where she works, and I've been listening to it a lot, and I love it. It's definitely grown on me and I plan to locate the missing Rachael Sage CDs and play them too. Another that has grown on my quickly, perhaps not Ecto fare, is Ryan Adams's (of Whiskeytown fame) solo CD, Heartbreaker. It's really beautiful, has some vocals by Kim Richey and Emmylou Harris and is just this slow, sexy countryish album. rachel ===== Rachel Kramer Bussel get Jilling Off guidelines at http://raquelita8.tripod.com/joguidelines.html Lusty Lady column at http://ctomag.com/may16cto/newlust.html Reviews Editor, http://www.venusorvixen.com Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! I had almost the same experience. I listened to Jeff's copy of the Shivaree disc several times last year, and was instantly entranced. Given my usual haphazard purchasing, I never did pick it up. But I grapped a used copy last week. It's a very intriguing album. I'm surprised it didn't show up on more year end picks. Similar (in experience, if not sound), I recently gave a number of solid listens to the self-titled Holly Palmer CD. This disc came out in 96, and I've had my copy for two years, but only last week did I really listen to it. I haven't absorbed it enough to say anything rational, other than it's quite tasty and I'd expect a fair number of fans here. I know there is at least one, since when I signed up for her announcement list, I got a note from list-manager Steve Ito. And, for Joe, I saw Aki Takahashi on Friday, performing a beautiful set of 20th Century piano tunes - John Cage, Paul Bowles (I didn't know he wrote music), Henry Cowell, Charles, Griffes, Charles Ives, Ruth Crawford, Virgil Thomson (he wrote biographies of artists, who sat for him while he composed piano music for them. Paul Bowles was one of the portraits performed.), and Morton Feldman. neal np: Bloodsucker - Scrawl ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2001 18:45:00 -0500 (EST) From: dmw Subject: Re: Shivaree On Sun, 14 Jan 2001, Neal Copperman wrote: > Similar (in experience, if not sound), I recently gave a number of > solid listens to the self-titled Holly Palmer CD.
