"sporting life" in particular is my favorite (for personal reasons) of the 3 i mentioned, and possibly the easiest of the 3 because it's tempered by the presence of John Paul Jones. it's like actual songs instead of tortured-soul- throat-odyssey, bite size snacklet packs of slow terror instead of the rabid dyscent into 5 star 13 course epicurean dysphoric gluttony. and shout outs to my boy John D who loves Diamanda too: a little less punctuation and a little less pausing to take a breath now and again and you'll be almost as incomprehensible as i can be sometimes. ;) let the passion overtake you, and care naught for reason. -veronica ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2000 03:00:06 -0500 (EST) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ********************* Jeff Pearce (no Email address) ********************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Jeff Pearce November 16 Orpheus Naama Avramzon Mon November 18 1974 Scorpio Jeff Smith Mon November 19 1962 Crash Kevin Bartlett Fri November 21 1952 Scorpio Claudia Spix Wed November 23 1960 Schuetze Anja Baldo Tue November 23 1965 Garbanzo Tommy Persson Wed November 25 1964 Sagittarius Pat Tessitore November 26 Sagittarius Valerie Kraemer November 26 Sagittarius Justin Bur Fri November 27 1964 Sagittarius Sue Trowbridge Sun November 27 1966 Skytten Ward Kadel Tue November 29 1977 Sagittarius Jesse Hernandez Liwag Wed November 29 1972 Water Rat Mirko Bulaja Sat November 30 1974 Block Juha Sorva Thu December 02 1976 Sagittarius Chip Lueck Thu December 05 1968 Sagittarius Michele Wellck December 08 Sagittarius Jeremy J. You hear these phrases like "anyone should be entitled to love as they choose as long as its between consenting adults" and "that is the right thing to do because it is moral" and "It's alright to do as long as no one is harmed by it". I have just always wondered, by what standard? Religious people say things like "well, because God says so" and things like that, but what if you don't believe in God? Then what makes anything wrong and anything right other than we might prefer a certain type of behaviour over another in our society? How is it that charitable work is any better than theft other than the fact that almost anyone tends to see charitable work as being a more admirable activity? Is everything we see as right and wrong really just because humans beings made it that way, or is there some fixed moral order? I dont believe in a fixed moral order..However I do beleive that as we behave towards others so will they behave towards us. Charity is better than stealing and tolerance is better than prejudice because it feels right for me to try to be as good as I can.I'm not religious..It just feels better that's all. Yes people will treat you badly at times then at least you have tried to be good. AM Yahoo! I just remembered (dunno if anyone had mentioned this) that KaTe Bush has some pretty awe-inspiring extended vocals on "The Dreaming". I *think* they're in "Leave It Open", but the album has blurred together a bit in my mind, which probably means it's time to listen again. Nice but I already had a copy of that live double CD (Ani's allover best) "Living in Clip." I had it lying around on the back seat of my car for a few months. Then I met a nice girl at the coffee shop in my home town, and she said she didn't have Living in Clip and was too in debt to buy it. So I gave her the copy and completely made her week. She was SO happy. :) Then a few months later I went to go see Ani at Summerstage. I didn't have a ticket but I thought maybe I could scalp one or sneak in or something. This man walked up to me and said, "Do you need a ticket?" I said, "yeah, how much?" he said, "it's okay, just take it, my girlfriend couldn't make it," and just walked away. Not only were the dollar values about the same for the CD and the ticket, but they were both Ani-related. You can tell me all you want it's a coincidence. I say it's karma, dammit! :) (And once I was inside at the concert, I ran into some friends of mine I hadn't seen in a while, and they gave me a piece of their blanket. One of them had a sore throat and I had cough drops, and another one had a headache and I had advil, so I think the whole thing was planned, don't you?) Loretta np: Badly Drawn Boy. The norms and values on many things vary widely over times and places; clearly there is no fixed standard and never has been. Organized secularists need to do more to promote the secular view of morality, to combat the efforts of the religious right to promote the view that belief in a supreme being is a _sine qua non_ of ethics. One does not need such a belief to buy into what the Wiccans express as "An it har none, do what ye will," or Rabbi Hillel as "What is hateful to thee, do not unto others. That is the whole law, the rest is commentary." A man called Larry Singleton raped a 15 year-old woman in the SF bay area about 15 years ago, cut off both her forearms and left her to die in a gully. ( She survived, and later testified against him at a sentencing hearing for ANOTHER murder he committed *after* being released from prison for his crimes against her. ) You cannot say "it changes nothing", if you really think it through, because it changes a lot: the innocent person would still be alive and the guilty one would not. Let's face it; we're *not* created equal; some people are just plain and simple factory rejects, and need to be returned to Mom. BTW, I used to be an opponent of the death penalty until I became a father; I think a lot of peoples' views on this change radically with parenthood. Once you have more than your own life and interests to protect, you tend to get a little less tolerant and forgiving of the evil bastards and monsters in the world.
