Hi! Here's a question for the Australian Ectophiles ... anyone know of a band called Emaline Delapaix? The name is ringing a bell so I'm wondering if they've been mentioned here and I just didn't pay enough attention. Info would be appreciated ... thanks! +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 09:51:08 -0500 From: Loretta Pontillo Subject: RE: Happy Rhodes well, I'm glad Happy's albums are for sale... but will I kick up a huge fuss if I say that $17.50 is an awful lot to pay for a CD -- especially with shipping? :( Does anyone agree with me? I suspect the CDs for sale on the web site happen to be just whatever Happy herself has on hand, and once they're gone, they're gone...since it says she currently doesn't have the rights to her back catalog, I assume that means she can't just print up more copies once she's sold out of her current stock. I don't think it's too much to ask for rare & OOP CDs. Considering that Rhodes 1 & 2 have in the past sold for upwards of $50 on eBay, $17.50 doesn't sound like such a bad deal :) (Besides, have you been to a Wherehouse or Sam Goody's lately? A lot of their new major label CDs sell for -- gulp! -- $18.98. Thank goodness for our independent record stores here in the Bay Area!) - --Sue Trowbridge trow@slip.net ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Nov 2000 15:49:32 -0800 From: "Suzanna Otting" Subject: RE: Happy Rhodes - -- >On Tue, 7 Nov 2000, Loretta Pontillo wrote: > >> well, I'm glad Happy's albums are for sale... but will I kick up a huge fuss >> if I say that $17.50 is an awful lot to pay for a CD -- especially with >> shipping? :( Does anyone agree with me? The reason that some CDs are $12 and others are $18 has to do with the way an album is promoted and distributed. Independent recordings usually don't get a lot of promotion, which means that they don't sell in large quantities, so stores or distribution companies buying directly from the label don't have an incentive to buy in large quantities for a discount. Happy's CDs were independent label recordings to begin with, and the way she is selling them now probably involves high labor costs, which means the price is pushed closer to a regular list price. I hope that makes sense! That got me a little riled, I have to say, for speaking as a musician I can vouch that those musical things on her albums are indeed songs, and we're talking composition here, not 3 chord Louie Louie clones. I mean this is the real deal. What stops me from banging my head into the wall is the realization that this label is now into smooth jazz - you know, Kenny G! To me, that stuff sounds like facile noodling, and the chord structures are alarmingly simple. "Glory", on the other hand, is a masterpiece. Happy, if you're out there, non carborundum et al... Yes, there are better lyricists out there, and like it says in her bio on the site, she's no virtuoso. But what she can do in the studio is nothing short of magical, and then there's That Voice. Put all of those together, and you've got something VERY special. Something worthy of placement in a musical pantheon. She is most certainly a songwriter. And a damned good one, at that. The people at Samson didn't have any clue what the hell they were listening to. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 23:06:13 -0500 From: Jeff Wasilko Subject: Nettwerk xmas CD Other new release news: http://www.nettweb.com/nettwerk/owa/news_room.news_story?p_news_id=436&p_submit=yes 1.
