I know artists that use the didgeridoo or the theremin but never together. The theremin is a very difficult instrument to play and to find! They are very rare! Didgeridoo music can be found on Steve Roach's albums, also his collaborations with Vidna Obmana, Suso Saiz, Vir Unis and others. Theremin music is very difficult to come by. There was a group from the 60's called "Lothar and the Hand People" who predominantly used the theremin in their music. Actually, I believe "Lothar" was the name given to the theremin. Anyway, the Beach Boys used one in "Good Vibrations" and I believe Radiohead uses one. Other than that, I can't think of any more. Hope that helped. I got her CD two weeks ago. (The computer at CD Baby thought I would like it based on something else I was buying.) Hirsch's "All Girl Band" isn't a light, easy-listening CD. The songs are edgy and often thought provoking. From Queen of the Prom: One little girl in a million grows up to be queen of the prom like there's nothing wrong it wasn't me... What would I do if I found my way down the aisle i'd pinch off my skin before i'd marry him it's just my style There's often a stark contrast between the introspective, compelling lyrics and the sparse piano work. This is a CD that you can't put on as background music: You feel that you have to listen carefully. And it's worth listening to. - --Bill n.p. I just happened to run across her sound files at CD Baby, and was intrigued enough to order the cd to go with Anne O'Meara Heaton's live disc (which I also like, but that's another story). And there's a song called "vamp" that starts "i was bitten by this friend of mine". This is full of interesting sounds. Anyone who had trouble with the different time signatures going on at the same time in Pepper Acton McGowan's disc might not like this either, but if you're interested in weird timings and off-beat songs, you might like this as much as I do. There are a few Tori-influenced soundings here, but mostly not, I'd say. And she does that little scratchy throat sound that Tori does sometimes (but so do other singers). There are sound samples at www.cdbaby.com and I'm going to go check out www.terami.com Anyway, I like her a lot so far. The disc only arrived yesterday. - --Neile np: terami hirsch--all girl band nr: Artemisia (a fictionalized biography of the painter, Artemisia Gentilleschi - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Nov 2000 07:13:03 -0800 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: 'Nother girl & piano At 7:24 PM -0800 11/2/00, Neile Graham wrote: >Anyone still interested in hearing another girl w/ piano (at least >mostly--there's lots more instrumentation, too) might want to give Teramis >Hirsch a listen. Their aesthetic combines the monochrome folk of the Cowboy Junkies with the spacious atmospherics of Clan of Xymox (both of whom they’ve covered in the past). Each album is not so much a step forward as much as it is a closer inspection of that dark and delicate cloth. They skirt the edges of monotony; the differences in mood are minute and subtle. A typical F&D song is built around Rosenwasser’s beautiful voice; imagine an operatic Natalie Merchant. Cooley’s tentative guitar is joined by deliberate percussion and hushed violin and flute. Most of the songs follow in this vein, but there are highlights. Rosenwasser’s voice is especially glorious on “Rubina Verde”; the opening title track is appropriately hymnal. And the traditional murder ballad “Banks of the Ohio” adds brittle mandolin and scratchy old-time record effects. “Beneath The Trees” also marks the first time they’ve printed lyrics; the words (mostly Rosenwasser’s) are elegant, and personal, avoiding the pomposity of most goth bands. Faith and Disease have created another rainy-day classic. http://www.operation-glam.com/faith/ - --Craig ===== Craig L.
