I recently made a CD that has problems playing in my playback unit. There was no "error" message while making it. The recorder is kinda 'plugged in' for recording and the CD player I've had for years is the playback. This CD will play through part of a particular cut and start it over. Every time, same spot. It plays fine in the recorder and plays fine in a CD player at work. Either there is a mild problem in the CD and only my old machine can catch it (?) or the problem is in the player. Is it screwing up 'out there' where the laser is scanning or is it more likely to be glitch of some kind in the information band? Last night, I went to see Alison Faith Levy's CD-release concert. I wasn't familiar with her music at all, but since it was right down the street from me I thought it would be a good opportunity to check her out. She wasn't what I'd expected from the vague impressions I'd gotten of her--she was a bit more poppy than I'd expected--but I picked up her new album, My World View, anyway, and it's been growing on me. There are some very catchy songs on it, like the title track (which you can hear at http://www.aquariusrecordssf.com/audio.html#levy). And others manage to strike a chord with me just because of her emotional delivery. Interestingly, one of my favorite tracks is the instrumental "Claim the Initial Impulse"--interesting because I don't usually go for instrumentals. I don't have anything to compare the album to, since I haven't heard her others, but it's a strong release overall. On Saturday I saw a performance by some touring Indiegrrls--Kym Tuvim, Edie Carey, Bari Koral, and Marjorie Richards. I hadn't heard any of them before, but they were all very talented. My favorite find of the four was probably Edie Carey, followed by Bari Koral. They both had the sort of quirky edge I like, which set them apart for me. I picked up Edie's first CD, which is quite good. She has another disc that came out this year. She and Bari are somewhat similar in that they both fall under the folk-pop umbrella, with all sorts of influences thrown in--jazz, rock, etc. I'd recommend checking out Kym Tuvim if you like Tracy Chapman sorts of people, and Marjorie Richards is very folky and has a great voice that is reminiscent of Joni Mitchell. - -Emily This message powered by EMUMAIL. -- http://www.EMUMAIL.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000 10:55:47 -0800 (PST) From: Bill Subject: Rasputin Hey, ecto fellows. The new album, Haunted is in stores tomorrow, and the title track is featured under the end credits of Blair Witch II, Book of Shadows, which is also this week. (I must say, the previews I've seen from the movie so far look pretty cheezy). Rolling Stone offered up a harsh review of the album, but while they make valid points about some of the lyrics, I think they missed the big picture. They complain about "tired samples", but those samples are all taken from recordings made by her own father, so they are completely original. They complain of "plodding" beats, but I happen to think the album has terrific energy. It's all a matter of taste, I suppose. Some who have attended the Borders performances to date have given very good reviews. It's a combined live performance by Poe, and a reading by her brother, Mark, from his new book, Whalestoe Letters. The presentation reportedly exposes some very personal details about their lives and upbringing. Performance times vary - some are during the day and others take place in the evening, so call ahead. Here are the remaining dates according to Atlantic: October 26 Denver, Colorado 28 Chicago, Illinois 29 Cleveland, Ohio November 3 New York, New York (461 Park Avenue location) 4 Boston , Massachusetts 6 Toronto, Ontario 7 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 8 Washington, D.C. 9 Atlanta, Georgia 11 Dallas, Texas 12 Houston, Texas 13 Austin, Texas There are also "Listening Parties" in some cities, preceding or following the Borders shows, which sound like they may actually be house concerts or something close to them. Rumor has it that the NYC listening party will be held this Wednesday, but the time and location haven't been announced yet. The NYC Borders performance follows this Friday, beginning at noon, I believe. Anna Maria" Here's something I don't quite get - why so much criticism amongst PJ Harvey fans about Dance Hall? The guitar style and overall texture of Dry was tailored to have the rhythm and chord structure more loosely suggested than outright consonant. The idea was to meader a little and get some ghostly sounds out of a dirty channel, instead of the straight on grunge sounds expected or getting the same sounds from clean channels and dead on rhythms ( ie, Poe's new album ). The idea, too, was to explore what Harvey's voice could do, considering she has about four of them. Reference "Dress" vs. "Plants and Rags," and toss in "Electric Light" to get a view of the progression she's gone through in that exploration. So now that I've babbled plenty... Dance Hall encompasses in many ways the range of musical exploration that Harvey has undertaken. It's light music established through sparsity and dissonance, with ingenious and broad vocal experimentation. It sounds detached, but only at first listen, after which it reveals itself to be *very* compelling music. Why so much love for Dry and so little love for Dance Hall, the latter of which is a mini summation of Harvey's triumphs to date? - - Katherine ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000 13:37:28 -0800 From: Neile Graham Subject: News from The Dear Janes For all interested. - --Neile >Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000 11:56:33 -0500 (EST) >Reply-to: "The Dear Janes" >From: "The Dear Janes" >To: ectoguide@smoe.org >Subject: Ectophiles' Guide - Artist Request > >The Ectophiles' Guide contact form has been filled out. I first got into Faye after hearing clips of a few Cocteau Twins covers she did, ordered a few CDs, and found that instead of just being interested in the novelty of a few CT songs sung in Chinese, I'd found someone whose music I really, really liked. The language barrier turned out to not be one; I can enjoy the music just as it is. And with "Eyes On Me", two of my interests -- her music and videogames -- found a happy moment together. I've bought releases from time to time since then, when I'm sure that the release is a new one -- I've found it's kind of tough with Chinese records, especially when you don't read Chinese at all. A lot of them are singles and/or compilations of older songs or live concerts or re-releases of older albums or... I'm now listening to "Fable" for the first time, on track 9 of 12, and I'm hooked; lots of different instrumentation, experimentation with different styles, good hooks, beautiful songs. (I've always had trouble describing music; the overblown alternative music review style just really annoys me -- you know what style I mean -- yet I know why they do it, because there are so few things to say about music, because it's just meant to be listened to. Text descriptions can never really do it right.) I think that "Exasperation" will always be my favorite of Faye's albums, just like "Heaven or Las Vegas" is my favorite CT, but I can tell this one is going to get a lot of play. I haven't been around ecto a lot -- not that I ever was a great contributor to the discussions, but I'm sad to say that a lot of e-mail from the list has simply fallen by the wayside. For some reason, I'd fallen out of the habit of buying new music. Recently, I've found some new music to be interested in; I really got into Aphex Twin and Mu-ziq for a while, and I really am beginning to like the ambient techno genre, but I think that Moby's "Play" really woke something up in me. I find myself looking for new releases I might like -- I bought Radiohead's "Kid A" on day of release and really enjoyed it -- and I think I might be back on the road to EWS. And I'd count some uses of the voice not usually considered as "singing". But then, I also really like the sound of distant floor polishers, and have been known to play a full concert while an entry alarm was blaring, so others may hear things differently :-) n.p. I have always felt terribly intimidated by Crista Calero (of Kaktus Mantras, now Povi), and for no reason whatsover, because she was never anything but sweet in personal contact. A little bit later on I went to my first Pavo Cristatus gig, and I was completely blown away by the performance. So when it was over I decided to go up to them and chat; decision made both easier and harder by the fact there were maybe two dozen of people in the audience - anyhow, I approached... and Tammy looked at me and suddenly I thought "oh dear, I've done it this time - this one is going to bite my head off!". Needless to say, she did nothing of the sort. She was lovely and seemed genuinely grateful for some sort of contact.
