They're not together anymore, the lead singer went solo under the name "ana voog" and released an "electronic pop" (her words, not mine) album on Radioactive Records (with whom she's since parted ways) that really is great... it's called _anavoog.com_... she has a website (anacam.com), she was one of the very first pioneers of the webcam culture that's sprining up all over the place... ana's very much a performance artist... curiously (or not) enough, she interviewed Tori Amos late last year and it was put up on toriamos.com and anacam.com... I know it's still up at anacam.com, and probably still is at toriamos.com as well... it's a pretty funny and fairly lengthy interview, ana's very bubbly and cute and they talk about a lot of different things. Paul, which two songs did your teacher use as examples? So long for now... John ===== - - John Drummond "[O]ne of Abaton's favorite young men[!!!]" - L. Before I book the space, I want to get feedback from the list. I initially looked into outdoor spaces to do Ectofest and found them to be both expensive and lacking. Then the brilliant Drew (via the message board) suggested the Kuumbwa Jazz center, which is my favorite venue of all time, but I had not considered as a possibility. Well, they are very reasonably priced and all inclusive. The Kuumbwa Jazz Center is in Santa Cruz Ca, which is about an hour south of San Francisco and a reasonable distance from 3 international airports (Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose). So it was decided to do a lengthy evening show, possibly preceded by an outdoor house concert. The first Saturday available at the Kuumbwa is June 9th. I already have a yes from Happy and Mary Lydia Ryan for that date. If anyone has any strong objections to either the date or the location, please speak up now before I book the space. He used Winter as an example of odd syllabic emphasis and placement. The first two verses are fine, but the third verse "boys get DIScovered AS winTER melts, flowers COMpeting for the sun" places the accents unnaturally on certain syllables. It's not a terrible thing, just a little disjointed, breaking up the natural rhythm of speech. Songwriters do it all the time, but my teacher's point was that it is less effective than writing lyrics and melody that keep the natural emphasis of the words (at least subconsciously, for the listener). I don't know how much I invest in that theory, but I do think that it does sort of distract the listener when words have weird accents. Leather was used as an example of a deceptive resolution. The chorus sets us up to expect the fourth line to follow the pattern of the second line. But the last line throws us off by offering a different pattern that creates tension instead of the expected resolution. Which is perfect because the lyrics present a twist that the listener doesn't expect ("and it's not the weather, hand me my leather"). there you go and thanks for the info on anavoog paul ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Oct 2000 23:02:21 -0700 From: Neal Copperman Subject: cool cellists? While Laurianne was trapped here (car broke down for a day), I spent a lot of time bombarding her with cool music she'd never heard of. For some reason, a lot of it seemed to involve cellos, and she's currently staying with some cello playing friends, and she wanted to share them with her. Made me wonder if there are any more excellent cello-oriented groups out there I could pass along. This is what I could think of so far.... Of course, we started with Jorane. but I also was playing: My Friend The Chocolate Cake Pavo Cristatus Wendy Rule (hmmmmm, why are all my cello bands from Australia Andrew?) Rasputina Verbow (Yeah, I know that I could list a dozen albums with Jane Scarpantonionionio's and Michelle Kinney on them, but they aren't really integral to the group.) neal np: Luarianne Fiorentino home demos ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Oct 2000 22:54:42 -0700 From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: Ectofest west - possible date Shelly & co. You guys are awesome! Sorry I fell out of touch after the initial flurry of discussions. Looks like you all proceeded behind the scenes admirably. As far as I'm concerned, June 9 is great, and all your proposals sound excellent. And you already have Happy!!!! That's the first announcement of this, right? I'm just in awe. If there is anything I can do to help (from New Mexico), definitely let me know. I'm thinking mostly of recruiting artists, but I'm game for just about anything. neal np: Laurianne Fiorentino home demos (Unbelievable concert last night... review to follow, but I think she is a really exciting find.
