Elysian Fields review from splendid ezine.. Elysian Fields / Queen of the Meadow / Jetset (CD) Sample 30 seconds of "Black Acres" Take the same violin sound that Mel Brooks went for in Young Frankenstein. Add drunken piano and the stormiest, most sultry vocals you will ever hear from an indie gal. Mix in a bit of drums, some deeply romantic lyrics ("While the walls tumble down/I won't rest till I find you") and a rash of traditional guitars, and then let everything whirl around your ears. You'll find yourself once, twice and always in the same daydream of having this chanteuse, Jennifer Charles, sing you to sleep. Whether her band gets poppy ("Bend Your Mind") or jazzy ("Cities Will Fall") or somewhere south of Drink #10 ("Black Acres"), the Elysian Fields will never make music more memorable than the powerful and thoroughly alluring voice of Jennifer Charles. For the band, I don't know if this is a good thing or not, as the music is often so good that it should get a chance to stand out in the spotlight. It does, to some extent, on the rumbling tumbleweed track "The Queen of the Meadow" -- but just because Oren Bloedow (the guy in the duo) sings lead here. Otherwise, listening to the Elysian Fields is akin to getting thrown a heap of good parts, and always only catching one. It is -- oh horror of horrors! -- too much of a good thing. -- td __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I agree. A total eye opener, not just to what Happy has been put through, but also the total lack of "civility" on the part of certain people at Samson. Gads... I bet at least 98% of the folks here - myself included - can tell Samson that yes, Happy can write songs. Cripes... Matt Bittner __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I can't help but smile. Talking about Annette Peacock here in Ecto is far more on-topic than anyone could imagine, since, if not for her, this mailing list almost certainly wouldn't exist. To make a long story short.. The major characters: Happy, duh Kevin Bartlett Dore Stein Bob Davis in California John Reimers in St. Louis Me in Kansas City (at that time) Kate Bush in England Annette Peacock..where ever she was Happy records Ecto. Kevin sees friend Dore Stein off to the West Coast with a bunch of sampler tapes in hand. One of the sampler tapes makes its way to Bob Davis who has (had?) a radio show somewhere out there. (I forget what and where) I know John through the Kate Bush fandom, and John knows Bob through the Kate Bush fandom. John, Bob and I are also Annette Peacock fans. John gets a tape of 2 Annette albums from Bob and brings the tape to me in Kansas City. I dub it without listening to it, but write down exactly what's written on the cassette. I listen to it at work and am VERY pleased to be hearing Annette that I haven't heard. I get very confused at the end of side one though, because a voice comes on that I don't know. A very very very cool voice too, I might add. I turn the tape over and listen to the 2nd Annette Peacock album (I bought them both later! Honest!!) and at the end of that side are more songs by this really amazing person. I get very excited and embark on a hunt to find out who this person is. My only clues to start with are words I have written myself, "Happy Rhodes, Ecto Sampler." That was in the late summer of 1988. The rest, as someone or another said, is history, sorta. Damn, if I'd known back then that Happy couldn't write songs, I wouldn't have bothered y'all on gaffa! :-) And to think that I've been fooled alllll thiiiis tiiiime! Vickie ps, THANKS TO ANNETTE!! Hi folks-- I finally got around to doing some (ir)regularly scheduled maintenance on the Ecto webring, this being the first chance I've gotten to do so since the merger of Webring and Yahoo that I was upset about a few weeks back. There have been some changes in Webring Land, not all of which are terribly pleasing to me, but I thought I'd share with you some of the new options. Now, when the ring was first created, many ectofolk made unhappy noises about the graphics options, so I made some alternatives, and allowed people to make their own graphics. Many of these (I cite here the graphic that Neile created for the Ecto Guide as an example) are truly lovely. Unfortunately, the folks at Webring have created a server-side navigation bar that is supposed to "conveniently" replace the old html fragments that y'all installed on your pages. While it does ease up the bandwidth on your end to install the new nav bar, there are several drawbacks to it, the chief ones being that: 1) They require java support to work 2) They are heinously bland and ugly with no alternative recourse 3) They do not allow members to create their own graphics While Webring will continue to support the old html fragments for a bit, they will eventually go the way of the dinosaur, according to the email I received back when the merger originally occurred. So, I am polling the collective creative genius of the ecto webring members for ideas as to how to work around this challenge. My first idea was to move the webring to a non-commercial host site. woj offered one suggestion as to a possible alternative, which I unfortunately deleted in an inbox-clearing frenzy (sorry woj!) so I know they're out there. Another option would be to find some universally agreed-upon graphic that I could add to the new navigation bar and wouldn't offend too many people. If you would like to see how the new nav bar looks, I've installed it on my two webring sites. Bounce over to http://www.geocities.com/kscleaves/Music.html to see how it looks online. Maybe it isn't as bad as I thought, but then again... If anyone has any ideas as to how to thwart the nav bar, let me know. If you wish to switch from the old html fragment to the nav bar, you need to login to webring, get a yahoo ID to associate your site with, and then they'll issue you a replacement javascript blip to insert where the fragment currently lives on your site. Fun, huh? Thanks for reading, and I await your comments and suggestions. This email will also be posted to ecto at large, in case some people are no longer checking the email address they used to sign up for the ring. Since a lot happened around the Cindy Lee show, I'll split it into two pieces. The first thing that happened, which was a big thrill for me, was that the Alibi (Albuquerque's free weekly) wrote a nice box preview of the show. I don't agree with everything in the article, but some of it is dead on. Plus, it was great publicity, which made me really happy. In fact, I got my first phone call from the article before I even managed to pick up a paper. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cindy Lee Berryhill Saturday, Sept 30; at a secret location (all ages, 7:30 pm, $10 donation suggested and requested) If eccentricity makes the world go 'round, then Cindy Lee Berryhill's earth is spinning on its axis, at times in a completely different direction than our own, end over end. Berryhill's freewheeling guitar style and tantalizingly weird arrangements recall Ani DiFranco and Patti Smith, but lyricaly, she leans more toward sharp tongues like Roger Manning and Jonathan Richman. Her helium voice darts madly between swoops and shimmers, growls and emphatic groans. Like DiFranco, Berryhill likes the post-punk approach to the accoustic guitar, refusing to let the unplugged nature of the instrument give her any shit. Instead, she gives her guitar quite a whipping, skewering humdrum arrangements with her own unique shifts and unexpected turns. The results are delightfully conversational, rhythmically driving and often so lyrically deep that listeners come away wonderig what busload of insight just hit them. Not surprisingly, Berryhill is most effective in a "living room setting," which is just how this concert is designed. Yes, it will take place in the living room of Neal Copperman, and seating will be extremely limited. Contact Copperman at neal@swcp.com or xxx to make reservations. And don't even think about skating in without making a donation - you're guaranteed to come away feeling like this was the best 10 spot you ever dropped. - Michael Henningsen - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cindy Lee and her cousin Ashley got into town late Friday night, after detouring through the petrified forest and painted desert. Jeff joined us for a late night bite at Double Rainbow. The following morning was my next big coup. We had about 25 minutes on KUNM's Women's Focus show. Given the generally political nature of the show, Cindy Lee opened with a typically skewed guitar/harmonica version of Damn, I Wish I Was A Man, and after some talk, also played High Jump. When talking about her early experiences with writing and music, she told a story about the first song she ever wrote. It was all about dinosaurs, and all the theories on how they became extinct. Apparently it had something like 10 verses to cover all the different theories. Unfortunately, this is a lost bit of Cindy Lee history, as all she can remember now is the chorus, which goes like this: Rocks Tumble lands grumble dinosaurs die so we're coming in to Cretaceous Times Given the other really old song I've heard Cindy Lee do (about the city of Pompeii), I think an album of ancient Cindy Lee songs would be hilarious. She then read from her book, which, based on the two readings I have heard, all seem to deal somewhat disgustingly with bodily functions. It was amusing to watch Cindy Lee censor herself for the radio, and also to watch the DJ, who seemed a bit taken aback with the direction the reading went. Then she closed off the appearance with a new song, which doesn't seem to match much of her catalog. It's really a soft, pretty song. Probably the closest I can think of is Unwritten Love Song from Marysville. We went to El Patio, a University area New Mexican restaurant, so Cindy Lee could have her fill of green chili. (For anyone who cares, she had Huevos Rancheros for lunch.) Amusingly enough, the DJ and engineer from the radio show also had the same idea, about a half hour later, and we talked about the pros and cons of house concerts. Cindy Lee spent the rest of the afternoon practicing while I ran around looking for various odds and ends to make the evening cooller than my previous shows. Cindy Lee wanted lights and candles, and I'd been meaning to buy the former, so it seemed a fine time to do that. I'd been told before that lights can make a big difference for how a show looks, but I kind of shrugged that off. Well, it really DOES make a big difference, and is pretty easy to do. I picked up a pair of $10 clip-on lights from Home Depot, and a $5 pack of gells from a music/equipment store to give them some color. Then, I stopped at Target and got a big handful of saintless candles (you know, the big cups with colored candles and pictures of saints, though I couldn't bring myself to buy any with actual saints on them. The most popular one was the multi-colored "lucky lottery" candle.) neal np: I Should Coco - Supergrass nr: So Far From God - Ana Castillo (finishing this one tonight) ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #308 **************************
