Free Radio Oregon Hill is a pirate radio station in inner city Richmond. It currently operates at 92.7 FM. The station operates 24-7 as best as it can. It has been on the air for over a year now. FROH is a direct response to the lackluster mainstream media. It is devoted to playing music and other material that is not heard on other radio stations. PLEASE DO NOT SHARE THIS INFO WITH MEDIA OR LAW ENFORCEMENT. Be careful who you pass this information to. FROH has recently enabled new block scheduling that will hopefully allow listeners to choose what they listen to and when to listen. Techno/electronica/industrial stuff is on 6 to 9pm. 'Alien Rock' is on 9pm to midnight, Hip-Hop/Rap is on midnight to 3am. Also, do not forget FROH's Morning Jazz, which is on from 6am to 9am. Specialty shows, such as Afropop, Reggae, Latino, Indian, Blues, Children's Show, will be enacted in the near future as FROH adds material to the library. This block programming, done via the Oregon Hill Satellite Network (of which FROH is a proud member) is designed NOT to be to rigid, so do not be surprised if there is some cross-pollination (i.e. a jazz track with techno flavorings might play during both the jazz and techno blocks). FROH will still feature live DJ's whenever possible. FROH is also committed to airing good, local music of all types. Free Radio Oregon Hill is especially interested in announcing and promoting community news, resources, and events. If you would like to contribute announcements or music, please send web sites with mp3 sources to this email address. Please do NOT send actual mp3 files directly to this email address. You can also mail stuff to P.O. Box 14738 Richmond, VA 23221. Right now FROH can be heard mostly in the Fan, Northside, part of Downtown, part of the West End, part of Southside. A good, decent antenna is needed to pick the signal up even in the mentioned areas. Car radios with antennas are usually able to pick it up. FROH has recently acquired some more equipment that will hopefully allow it to gradually increase its range very soon. FROH is also working on internet or webstreaming possibilities. Although FROH did do any remote broadcasts this past summer, it is capable of broadcasting from remote locations- parties, concerts, special occasions. The station sometimes requests a donation to do this. Another way to support Free Radio Oregon Hill is to buy the station T-shirts, available at Plan 9 record stores. Ask for them. Politically FROH is part of the larger microradio movement. It is not part of WRFR, the local group pushing for legal LPFM, but it supports them and asks others to do so (contact WRFR@aol.com). Right now neither Robb or Allen have come out publicly in favor of LPFM, though the current FCC administration has advocated it. Now that the stuff that needed to be said has been said, here are a few of the new music releases that FROH has added to its playlists: Cool Beans #11 Bonus Sex cd A cool compilation of car racing noises, Tommy Lasorda outtakes, hockey brawls, pop and punk bands (Deerhoof, Monitors, Weasel-MX, and more) that came with the latest issue of Cool Beans magazine. It was really affecting, it made you want to rent Selma and apartment and be her best friend for the rest of your life. Yes, it was sad, but it was very unique and a real artistic accomplishment. But perhaps I was a bit slanted because I love The Sugarcubes so much. I also got a few new used CDs this week....... The Innocence Mission "Bright as Yellow" EP This was released shortly before the release of the band's third album GLOW. It has two songs from that album, the title track and "That Was Another Country". There are also two non album tracks, "Let's Talk About Something Else" and "Geranium Lake". To say the least I was pleasantly surprised to find out how good these two tracks are. "Let's Talk About Something Else" has a rolling, lazy kind of beat sort of like "Bright As Yellow", and it's absolutely beautiful. Karen's voice is utterly sensuous, more powerful than usual. "Geraniun Lake" is very short, perhaps barely over a minute, and it's just Karen accompanied by Don on electric guitar. Whoa! The melody was amazing! Normally non-album tracks are somewhat less than what the artist is capable of, but these two songs were actually better than a lot of songs on GLOW. Anyway, if you like The Innocence Mission, and you have all there albums, this should be the next thing you look for. The Henrys "Puerto Angel" I got this because Mary Margaret O'Hara sings on two of the tracks (one of which she wrote). This is kind of country rock flavoured stuff, the musicians are all really good, like jazz quality. The bass player gets an extremely thick, rich tone and he's really funky too. Hugh Marsh plays on this too, and the tracks with Mary are very country-ish, kind of like "Dear Darling" from MISS AMERICA. I can never get enough of this woman. I think I'm now a converted Henrys fan as well. The Smiths "The Smiths" This is one Smiths album I haven't picked up until recently, but since I've had Hatful of Hollow for a long time there weren't a lot of songs on here I didn't know already. Great sound from the band, loved most of the songs I hadn't yet heard, especially "Suffer Little Children". I found some of the lyrics, specificlly "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle". Ummm, can anyone tell me what exactly this is about? hmmmm, hehe. All in all, i really liked it, although it's probably my least favorite Smiths album. If Poe had come out with something that sounded like Hello at this point I think I would have found the sound tiresome, so I didn't have the highest expectations for the new CD, but wow! You know how all too seldom you put on new album, and the hair on your arms begins to bristle, your adrenaline starts to rush and you want to keep turning it up louder, even though it's turned up as far as it can go? Well this is it! It simmers, then explodes, then segues to moody, to melodic and back again. It's also loaded with atmospheric movie-style sound bites, sound effects and bridges that really tie the whole thing together in true concept album fashion. This one just rocks, and is guaranteed to end up on my favorites list for 2000. Haunted is due out October 31st, and Poe begins a US tour of Borders Books & Music beginning this Monday. Joined by her brother, Mark Danielewski, author of House of Leaves, Poe will reportedly combine spoken word and music, previewing the new songs and providing insight into the making of the album. Thematically linked to House of Leaves, Haunted is not a soundtrack to the novel, but, as she and Mark explains, "a parallax view of the same history", with the album and book offering two individual responses to the same events and upbringing. In tandem with her tour of Borders, Poe is apparently going to do some house concerts on this tour. I haven't been subscribed to Poe's Angry Psychos list for a while, but if someone here is a member can you share any details with us? Here are the Borders dates: October 16 Seattle 17 Portland, OR 22 Los Angeles 25 Salt Lake City 26 Denver 28 Chicago 29 Cleveland November 3 New York (461 Park Ave location) 4 Boston 6 Toronto (does Toronto really have a Borders now??) 7 Philadelphia 8 Washington DC 9 Atlanta 11 Dallas 12 Houston 13 Austin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2000 17:30:00 +0000 From: carnivore@bigfoot.com (DanStark) Subject: Re: Poe news Oops, correction! I just re-read the Atlantic press release, and unfortunately it doesn't say Poe will be performing at people's homes, but delivering the album in person to members of her fan club at their homes. Apologies for the error. I know, house concerts would have been awesome! Dan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2000 14:08:54 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Help!
