I was fortunate to be able to attend Friday's show. The concert was a benefit for the American Cancer Society, with a specific focus on making the audience more aware of what is currently happening with breast cancer research. This was the first time that I have had the pleasure of seeing Emily perform. Her music is intelligent, intricate, and yet very emotionally moving. To my frame of reference, her music is a mix of Kate, Tori, Keith Jarrett, and Hatfield and the North (a Canterbury prog jazz rock ensemble from the 70s). Her piano playing and dramatic, almost operatic, singing are very affecting. I was not really familiar with her material prior to the gig, with the exception of one song from Neile's sampler tapes. Emily mentioned that she was playing songs from her last two CDs. She also played a new composition that hasn't been recorded yet. My favorite piece was "Dancing Past Elysium". Her band was tight, subtle yet dynamic, and inventive in their playing. The downside of the performance was that Emily's set suffered from a poor sound mix. Her vocals and piano were too low in the mix. A number of people in the audience were complaining. The sound techs swapped out her vocal mic in an attempt to solve the issue. Unfortunately, that didn't alleviate the problem. The concert was held in the Mills College Concert Hall. It is a fine small college concert hall, but it lacks the proper P.A. system to effectively highlight the type of music that Emily performs. I have heard and read many good things about Emily through Ecto posts and the Guide. That is one of the main reasons why I wanted to see her perform. I was very impressed with Emily and plan to order her last two CDs from her web site. Another wonderful Ecto discovery! Thanks! Bill M. Hello all, Haris Alexiou's new album, Whispers, is now available (though only through your favorite Greek music importer). Supposedly it's a collection of her favorite songs in very stripped down arrangements, just piano and guitar, showing off her voice. Sounds good to me--mine is on its way (I ordered it through www.gcv.com--Greek City Video in Canada). With the exchange rate it turns out to be a pretty good deal--especially if you order $100 or more (you get free postage). I'll post more once I hear it. Jeff Hanson n.p. Happy and the Project Lo/Lolo Records boys gave a really nice, intimate show last night at the Metro Cafe in Washington, DC. This is only the third time I've had the good fortune to hear Happy perform live. After Geno White did an all-too-brief, nice acoustic set, Happy, Bon Lozaga, Vic Stevens, and Hansford Rowe did a wonderful set comprising songs from various Pro-Lo, Happy, Hansford Rowe, and Gongzilla albums. A couple of new Happy tunes were offerred from her upcoming cd (which she acknowledged isn't recorded yet). The set comprised (forgive me for any title errors): Your Mind/One in Many/Ali/Perfection/Can't Let Go/Mercy Street/Roulez/Here Comes the Flood/3 Rivers of Lor/Image/D.I.E./Serenading Genius. Frankly I could have sat there for another three hours listening to them. It was really wonderful. It is unfortunate that once again, they have sufferred poor advertising from the host venue upon visiting the DC area. But the bar is a tiny place, and those who were there gave the band a nice response, fortunately without much distraction from unknowing customers ~ a problem with many nightclubs. This might have been a different scenario on a Friday night, but because of the Sunday gig and a holiday weekend, it was a nice, respectful audience. Happy and the boys were very gracious and generous with their pre- and after-show time, although I know they were in a hurry to hit the road and get back to the Philly(?) area. I'll hang out for a while if anyone has any questions or comments, but due to my volume of email, I may jump off the list soon. My kind regards to all Happy fans. I wish I could hear her perform live every weekend! ~~Mark C. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Oct 2000 22:24:43 -0700 From: Bill Mazur Subject: Re: interesting web site Neal and my fellow Ectophiles, Celestial Voices is a very fine site.
