From what others on the list have said, this CD was Happy's most deliberate attempt at writing and recording a CD with strong commercial potential. I find it to have some of my absolute favorite Happy songs and a few of my least favorite as well. My favorites include "Hold Me", "Just Like Tivoli", "Dying", "Collective Heart", and "You Never Told Me". "Dying" is a very beautiful song. Bill M. That certainly sounds wretched in a nigh-on-universally agreed upon way. On the other hand, one can make truly abysmal music after becoming a knowledgable musician and songwriter as well. I have a friend who inspires me as often as I think of him to ponder the depths to which human creativity can sink. At best, the music ends up tepid and uninteresting, while the lyrics range from dull, all the way to embarasing. Since he obviously thinks highly enough of the music to play it, it isn't, perhaps, absolutely bad, but again few to no other people would agree, and I feel something like a right to dismiss them out of hand. Still there's the case of Wesley Willis, a mentally impaired, schizophrenic homeless (not exactly, but follow me) man, whose songs are three-minute stylized rants about busses and the concerts he's been to, mumbled or shouted, but certainly not sung over Casio keyboard demos. There is nothing like traditional musical skill involved, but yet it is somehow fascinating. So I guess I have to say "go figure". Would this piece of work be > objectively bad, or, in fact, would it be just a matter of opinion? Hello Everyone, Actually, what would probably happen is as follows: A few people will embrace this band as their own. The band will start off with a small hard core and rabid cult following. A handful of critics (probably from NME and Rolling Stone) will hail their work as "brilliant, bold, and a work of true innovation". Then the cult following will grow steadily into mass popularity and hysteria. They will then sell millions of records. Where they used to play in small, filthy hole-in-the-wall clubs, they will now play in huge football stadiums. The band members will indulge their every decadent whim. The critics and original cultists will now deride them as being "sellouts". Their bass player will have a sex change, their lead singer will be found in bed with an underage groupie and spend most of his royalties on lawyer's fees, the lead guitarist will end up in the Betty Ford clinic for cocaine abuse, and the drummer will die of an unfortunate, accidental alcohol and sleeping pill overdose. Ten years later they will again be hailed by some fans and critics as geniuses. The band will have their story told on "VH1: Behind the Music" with exclusive new interviews with the remaining band members. They will claim to be much wiser for the wear and ready to unleash a new barrage of inspired dissonance on the world's radio and Internet waves. They will mount a come back tour with a new drummer to a small, but loyal mix of the original cultists and their "golden days" fans. Most of the fans will think that the shows were marginally "OK" and most of the critics will give them a C- stating that their music is a tired rehash of a once ground breaking musical genre. Would this band's music be "Objectively Bad"? My answer to that question is "No". That answer reflects my opinion and perspective on this debate. Art is a reflection of the life and times of the artist. If people embrace it, then the artist has touched someone with their art. Even if people hate the artist's work, it has still effectively done the same thing. I agree with the statement that art is subjective. How you react to it is based on your own experiences and preferences. You either embrace it (sometimes to the extreme), reject it (sometimes to the extreme), or just don't bother with it. OK, I'm tired and I'm going to bed now. ;-) Bill M. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Sep 2000 13:19:54 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: mid-Sep Diva news: Scarlet Life CD out in 2+weeks!! Mick Farren of _Vampire Stole My Lunch Money_ fame wrote a trio of SF novels, which i haven't read, but have heard good things about. Robyn Hitchcock has referred at various points to an in-progress novel, although it's doubtful when/if it might actually appear.
